View Full Version : What are "reputation points?"

I couldn't find this in the FAQ section.
I'm flattered by the fact that I have gotten a few "green dots," which I assume to be good things...
What are they? How are they "earned?" How are they "given?"
Thanks!

I was just wondering whether it was worth re-proportioning the rep description boundaries as now that there are a few people knocking on with 50K worth of rep, if they hit someone with little rep, that person jumps from something like having "a bright future" to having "reputation beyond repute" in one easy step.
I love the rep boundaries myself, they're a cool little extra on the Senate, but once you hit the top certain level, there is nothing left to look forward to :(
Maybe no-one else is worried about this as once you are an experienced Senator, you don't notice it anymore...but I think it's cool. :)
One other quick question too - the default User Title goes from "Junior Member" to "Senior Member". Are there any others that it changes to after a certain amount of time?

Rep - I want that too...I want a new rep title!
User titles - nup. Nup. Nup. Nup. Nup.
You know you can change them.

^ So is that a no meaning that there are only those two? Or a no to mean that you don't want them at all? ;)
Yep, I know they can be changed, I was just wondering whether I would get something cool if I didn't.
One other thing...would it be possible to get the navigation bar at the bottom as well as the top? It would be useful as when you finish reading a thread, the navigation bar would be just below, rather than having to scroll all the way to the top again...

We used to have like 20 members titles, but got rid of those. No one has gotten around to changing the rep titles, so maybe I will. Any suggestions?
I thought of lowering the numbers, but people will complain. Just don't pee me off, because when I give negative rep now it's -400 points.

I still don't know how you all can figure out how much rep point power you have.
Orandhite
09-28-2007, 03:40 PM
I normally just take the number of rep I have and divide it by 100...
Not sure if that is right though...
Sarah-Leia
09-28-2007, 09:36 PM
That means that I give out 740 points per hit!
Sarah-Leia
09-28-2007, 10:48 PM
Well now it's 748...if Jeerroodd's theory is correct.
Sounds correct.

746 to be exact, Sarah! :w00t:

Damn. Really? So, that means I have just under 290 points per hit?
:crying: And I thought people liked me.

I can't believe I was (relatively) right about the rep points! Thats never happened before...
So going back to the idea of new rep boundaries - is it possible to do something like a different band say for people who want to be Sith, people who want to be Jedi, people who want to be mercs, bounties or smugglers?
Possibly not, but I am in my programmer head so came up with a nice little ERD - I am such a geek.

I feel that the rep points have lost their point entirely, when newcomers start out with a bunch of given reps like a welcoming gift, and people giving reps out randomly to be nice rather than for the quality of a post one has made. Of course, I'd have no reps at all if not for charity as my posts mostly suck, but my point is that it's become a popularity contest with high rep numbers being achieved by grace rather than earned. Just sayin'.

One question:
I've seen people adding smilies into reps...
How do you do that?
Jedi Master Harrison
11-06-2007, 08:57 AM
I wondered that for 6 months, until Emp kindly explained. You just need to type the smiley as it appears when you hover over it.
For example, if there was a smiley of a horse you would type :horse: and it would appear. Obviously I can't type any actual smiley name or the smiley itself would appear!

I miss all those poster titles, they were awesome. Gave you something to look forward to when starting out. And the colored names that corresonded with your title, too! Ohh, those were the days.
I agree that if we are going to keep on with this rep system, we ought to come up with more descriptions. Kinda lame that pretty much everybody has "reputation beyond repute."
I prefered it when mine was "Has a brilliant future" and whatnot... at least it separated me from the herd. Is there a list of the descriptions we already have? If I could see it I'd try and come up with some new, perhaps amusing descriptions.
And it would be cool to scale down the rep system. People jumping hugely is pretty ridiculous, I must admit. It's cool when people actually have to work for their "acclaim." Much more fair, that. :)
Well... that's my 50 cents.

points-shmoints! I say what I gotta say. If no one else likes it, that's their deal.
That said, it is cool to give a shout-out to those folks that entertain or educate.

You know, I felt the same way too. I actually didn't even know I was getting rep points until like eight months after I got the majority of the ones I have. :sidxmas:

If we give rep before reaching 50 post will it show up? or would I have to wait till i get there for it to show?
I should have looked here before i did it!:geek:

The rep shows up. (Thank you Menso btw) It's just that you don't start adding to a persons actuall rep point count until after 50 posts. i.e. I havd 500 rep points before you gave me rep Menso, and after you gave me rep I still have 500. No increase. Thats not bad it just is what it is.
