View Full Version : Lukes lightsaber crystal
I was thinking why is lukes lightsaber green when the lightsaber that Anakin had in ROTS was blue! (maybe he had a green at one point if i'm mistaken but I don't think he did) and when Obi-Wan gave Luke the Saber he said it used to be his fathers! did he replace the crystal or something?

From memory (I am sure I will be corrected if wrong!) Obi-Wan gave Luke Anakin's blue lightsaber in ANH and he had this until The Empire Strikes Back. He lost it when Vader cut his arm off which was why he had to construct himself a new one, which is the green one that we see in Return Of The Jedi. I do not know any details of where Luke got the green crystal from as I have not got to that era in my reading list yet. It may not even have been stated anywhere.
I believe that Anakin usually used a blue lightsaber, however when the battle broke out on Geonosis he was thrown a green one (his blue one was broken by the machinery in the factory on Geonosis).

You are right Andy. There is a EU story that covers the actual construction of Luke's new lightsaber and it is called "Shadows of the Empire" by Steve Perry. It is only a small section of the book. You will read it shortly since it is between ESB and ROTJ in the storyline.
interesting i'll need to get to reading that after planet of twilight but i never thought ya luke did drop his lightsaber in cloud city so makes sence

When Vader cuts his hand off, the hand and the saber it was holding fall into the depths of Cloud City. But Luke gets it back and eventually gives it to Mara.

^ I always hated that little turn of events.
He lost his hand and it fell like billions of feet and there's no way he could have ever gotten hs lightsaber back...That's where it went it was lost when Vader cut his arm off.
If we eliminate EU, we have to just make the assumption that he "constructed a new lightsaber" as Vader says in ROTJ and found the crystal somewhere.
Even though losing his first lightsaber in Cloud City makes perfect sense. He also lost a hand and we never saw that again.

Well in the EU it wasn't himself that got it back. Vader/Empire got it back with the hand to clone the Luuke clone. How it didn't get crushed by gravity at the centre of the gas planet is a good question though.
probley some kinda unexplained force energy preserved it.

I don't know if the hand was supposed to have fallen out of Cloud City into/onto Bespin - i always just assumed the hand had gone into a side corridor or something like that.

Can you imagine if you were walking down that corridor and this stump of a hands comes in from nowhere and lands at your feet? Enough to put you off your dinner!

Reminds of teh janitor in the Robot Chicken Star wars special.
He was mopping the floor at Naboo when two pieces of Darth Maul suddenly fell down in front of him, then he was mopping the streets of Coruscant when Mace Windu dropped down in front of him, and then he was mopping the floor of the Second death Star when the Emperor was thrown down by Vader and landed in front of him.
lol, hate to have that job.

If I'm not mistaken, the hand might be part of the debris that fell out along with Luke when he hit the weather vane. I'd need to do a slo-mo viewing to say for sure.
As far as the crystal goes, the prop lightsaber was built with a green one. If you haven't seen the prop before, it is featured at the end of this video:

sneaky hands. At least we know that Luke's hand went on to have a thriving acting career in the Adams Family as "Thing".

Now that would be interesting to find out!

There is a deleted scene from ROTJ in which Luke constructs his new lightsaber. T'bone has an article about the scene (http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/index.php?categoryid=11&p2_articleid=428) in his excellent deleted scenes sections.
