View Full Version : NFL Season 2002-2003

Who isnt hyped about this season in the NFL?
I mean, the 9ers are on the upswing and are once again Super Bowl contenders, the Raiders lost their youngest player--oops! I mean coach, Jon Gruden--,the entire league has just been realigned, Mooch and T.O. have worked out their differences, and my birthday lands on the day of the SUPER BOWL!!!!! (The next time this phenomenon will occur will be something like 20 years, I believe)
So . . . whos your favorite team? Whos your most hated team? Think you hate the Raiders more than I do? Who are you predicting to go all the way? And . . . what present will you be bringing me at the biggest bash in the world: The OH MY GOLLY, THE FORTY NINERS HAVE JUST WON THE SUPER BOWL AND ITS JEFF'S BDAY party.
I figure that since many fantasy leagues are beginning to take form about this time of year, and seeing as I am lookin for a little input on the three leagues that I will be commissioner-ing come September, I figure its a good time to start this thread.
So . . . what do you think?
Senator Theant
07-11-2002, 05:56 AM
Figure Id reply to my own topic just to get things started . . .
I am a hardcore 9er fan who thinks that Jeff Garcia will carry the franchise on his back with his chicken legs, mind you, all the way to Lombo's Trophy.
Concerning the Raiders . . . I dont really hate them, I just detest their fans. They think that they are the most passionate fans in the entire league when theyre just plain dumb. I mean, you can pick up any fair-weather Ram fan actin just as passionate about their football as any Raider Nation fanatic wearin all black lookin like a freak. At least whiny Ram fans dont kill opposing team fans in their own home stadiums! (Qualcomm Stadium, 2000). Yea . . . I may sip wine now and then, but that doesnt mean I got less pigskin fever then the Raider fan next to me!
So yea . . . I worship Bill Walsh and burn in effigy Al Davis.

Boy, that sounds awfully familiar.
Broncos, baby. Bronco fan, yes I am.
Even though i'm stuck in this God-forsaken Seahawks market, which isn't even in the same division anymore. Bob Whitsitt can be such a moron sometimes. Okay, I take that back...most of the time.

GO RAVENS nobody else has a chance against the Superbowl XXXV champs.
Senator Theant
07-11-2002, 03:56 PM
Yea. . . about the Rams.
At first I was disappointed to see that they were still stickin around in the West after realignmnet, but now that I think about it, Im happy we'll be seein that franchise twice a year. You see, the way theyre spendin money--Snyder-like, you see--they big time money makers will all fall down into the black hole of the salary cap and this little "episode" of theirs will be over and the 9ers will return to kicking their @$$es for another 15 years and who knows what after that. Considering the fan base in St. Loui, that team doesnt have a chance of a dynasty anything close to the Red and Gold Dynasty. That and, oh yea, free agency's a b****.
I have respect for the Eagles and Andy Reid. Mcnabb is a warrior, no doubts about that, but it seems as if the team always has this slump in the middle or end of the year that gives em the wild card in the playoffs. I remember two years ago against Tampa Bay, they looked like such a good team and beat em but coulldnt keep up in later rounds.
Hey Seanakin . . . you know where I comin from with this Raider hatred. Im unfamiliar with the realignment in the AFC, are the Broncos and the Raiders in the same division as before?

I am hyped up about the new season starting, I can't wait !!
I was and still am a Dolphins fan. I was a major Dolphins fan when Dan Marino was one of the kickass Quarterbacks. Since he left, my devotion to them has waned slightly but I still follow them and want them to do really well but will they ever win the SuperBowl. Well, I'm not going to bet that they will.
To drown my sorrows of Marino leaving I decided to take on a second favourite team, the Rams. Partly because they kick ass and I am also an Aries which the star sign is, well, a Ram.
So anyway, go Dolphins, and when they fail, go Rams !!

The AFC West remains unchanged, save for Seattle leaving for the NFC. So it's still Denver, KC, SD, and, oh yeah, Oakland. The smaller divisions will make for more interesting intra-conference rivalries, though I fear inter-conference play will slowly be phased out of the schedules.
That would be interesting, should that happen. It'd be like MLB before they introduced interleague play.

Niiice . . . I cant wait until the two Bronco/Raider matchups. Should be blow-outs , if you ask me. 45-21 and 42-14 if the Broncos play their cards right.
Hey AlanRJ . . . I think the funniest thing to happen to Marino's legacy would be Miami's acquisition of Ricky Williams. Although it may be argued that the guy has been somewhat of a bust since Dikta sacrificed all of the Saints draft picks in 1999, I think he will prove to be a great asset to the Dolphins. Whats this double talk? You speak as though you worship Marino yet when this other guy Warner (The Ape, I call him) enters the scene to break all of the former # 13's single season records, you fall to your knees. IF anything I would think that "The Fluke" Warner would be your most detested enemy. He is mine, anyways, but thats another issue.
Thank God the NFC Central (Now the NFC NORTH) stayed together for the most part, with the exception of the Bucs. I couldnt imagine what the folks in the heartland of the US would do if that division was split.
I have mixed feelings about no interleague play. It helps to be able to determine the better team wthin the conference for, say playoff ranking, yet some pretty good rivalries have blossomed because of it.
Seanakin
07-11-2002, 05:40 PM
Yeah, I too LOVE that NFC North division, almost as much as the AFC West. The two East divisions look alright,if only because they've stayed relatively intact and can therefore boast the familiar rivalries that fans love. (Jets-Phins, Cowboys-Skins)
Williams is an effective running back, though not without the Antecedent of Death, i.e. WHEN HEALTHY. And yeah, for all of Marino's whiners, they need to realize he built the team around the Neo-Coryell offense and forsook the running game. Total vindication came when Denver finally had a top-notch running game and not coincidentally became a championship-calibur team.
I wish Marino hadn't tied Elway for QB wins before getting bumped out the door, but at least he didn't break the tie, I guess.
As for the Broncos of the here and now, it all depends on how Griese does, and if he was worth all the faith the team had put in him the last few years.

I can understand why everybody hates Warner ... having him shred the defense and throw for 400 yards against your favorite team does that to you. The Rams are the funnest team to watch. That's why I like them. If they can just get a decent defense together, they'll make it to the Super Bowl again.
I used to be a Cowboys fan, until Coach Jerry Jones started to think he knew how to run a football team.
Anyway, I'll be happy no matter what, as long as the 49'ers, the Eagles, and the Ravens fall on their faces and lose!

That's right baby! The birds all the way in 2002!!! The Rams were lucky to survive that conference title game of last season, and that luck will run out this year. There's no doubt that the NFC will be decided between these 2 budding rivals. Darth Arraics, I like the way you think.
The 49ers are a tough team as well, but I don't think they have quite enough yet.
As far as the AFC goes, well I have always had a soft spot for Denver as well, but Griese is the X-factor on that team. Oh, that and whether Terrell Davis can return to form finally.

Obi Wan- The fact that you are a Cowboys fan is nauseating enough, but to have the audacity to predict a Super Bowl out of that collection of stiffs is out of line! You should be thankful if they win 7 games this year. All of that said, they will be better than they have been for a few years. Their defense will surprise a lot of people, but their QB situation will be their undoing. Emmitt Smith may break Walter Payton's record this year, but that will probably be the only highlight for the Cowgirls this year.

You poor, misguided, ignorant, blind fan. The Cowgirls do play the Eagles this year, twice in fact (they are in the same division). What do you see in the Dallas Cowgirls that leads you to believe they are capable of beating the Houston Texans, let alone the Eagles? Being a fan is one thing, but it helps to be a realist as well.
The 'Boys have a fine running back, but he's getting old. Their receivers leave a lot to be desired as does their tight end, but that doesn't really matter because who will be the QB? Quincy Carter?! Oh boy, that's scary. Like I said earlier, I think the only positive they have going for them is on the defensive side of the ball, and that may be enough for them to win 5-7 games, but no more.

The Cowboys are really pathetic, if they even play Houston this year it will probably be a big game in history because it will Houston's first win.
My favorite team is the Colts, and I think they are a big sleeper to win it all this year. Yes, I know they didn't even make the playoffs last year, but look at what they've got:
Edgerinn James, who is probably the best running back in the league besides Marshall Faulk. Sure, he has had some off field problems in the past, but they haven't affected his play so far. Also, he is coming back from a season ending injury so it will be interesting to see if he is still as good as he was before the injury.
Dominic Rhodes, another great running back, who will be able to fill in for Edgerinn and take the load off of his back in certain situations.
A new coach, Tony Dungy, who has actually WON in the playoffs and I think he is now ready to win a Super Bowl.
A new defensive coordinator that will bring a new scheme that will prove to be much less complicated to the young defense then the one Vic Fangio used last year.
And of course you've got Peyton Manning. I think the only reason he didn't have a good year last year was because he had alot of pressure on him. Since the defense was so bad, he had to score every drive. (and he didn't have his best running back with him either most of the time)
Peyton's targets: Marvin Harrisson, an All-Pro, Quadry Ismail, an exciting player, and a second year guy with alot of potential named Reggie Wayne. Not to mention TE Marcus Pollard, who will now be REALLY able to shine because of the loss of Ken Dilger.
Not to mention the Colts almost made the playoffs last year with the worst defense in the league and terrible coaching, and they also had the toughest scheaduale in the AFC.
If the Edge can come back from his injury okay, if everyone can stay healthy, if the defense improves with their new draft pick, and coach and allows 20 points a game, the Colts will be at least 11-5 in the regular season.
If Peyton can lift his curse of not winning in the playoffs, which I think he can do with Tony Dungy as the coach, the Colts will make it to at least the final four teams.
They've got a shot this year: Great Head Coach Tony Dungy, whose mentor (and person who got him into coaching) is the Colt's offensive coordinator and mastermind Tom Moore, they Colts have a chance to go far.

I know I'm alone on this one, but my favorite team is the Buffalo Bills. I've got family up there, so its how I was raised, and about the time I started to understand and enjoy watching football the Bills made their unbelievable four Super Bowl appearances (BTW - Don't tell me any jokes, I've heard them all). Of course, since I live in the Baltimore-D.C. area the Bills are only on TV for Monday or Sunday night games, which they don't have any this year. Hopefully I'll make it up to a game though.
Anyways, at most I'm hoping for a wild-card playoff spot. Very excited about getting Drew Bledsoe, but the Bill still have a lot of areas to improve and are still recovering from some salary cap problems, so I don't have super high expectations. At worst, going .500, at best a wild-card, maybe the divison.
As for who I see - in the AFC, I like (I can't believe I'm saying this) the Dolphins. If Ricky Williams has even an average season (1000 yds.) I don't think they can be easily stopped. I also think Colts and Steelers could do some damage, assuming the Colts defense plays well and Kordell wasn't just having a fluke year
In the NFC the Rams are an obvious choice, as are the Eagles. I think Minnesota is gonna come back with a venegance this year (they had a lot of off the field problems which really affected them). I hope Chicago does well too.

threePO- Colts, huh? Not bad, they' re gonna be pretty damn good this year, I think. Tony Dungy is just what this team needed. Last year, I stole Quadry Ismail from some sap in a trade in my fantasy league and it was one of the best moves I made all year! He will add a lot to that already potent offense.
Tunafishman- Hey, don't feel bad about rooting for the Bills. I've rooted for the Eagles as long as I've known and they were 3-13 just 4 years ago. Now they are among the leagues' elite. I'll tell you one more thing, the Bills will probably surprise a few teams this year and win 7, maybe 8 games. They have a pretty decent offense now that they have gotten a QB they can count on, it's their young defense that will take a little time, but don't worry, I think they will be playoff bound maybe as soon as next year.
Obi Wan- Thanks for your well thought out responses. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sly.gif

I wont start on the cowboys but I will say this: The Owens fiasco in Dallas was tragic. I still cant believe they actually suspended the guy! I mean, Cow fans are accostumed to embarrassment nowadays, why slap some player on the wrist when you need to punch Jones in the face? What is this world coming to?
threePO, allow me to convey my condolences. I suffered with you, buddy. The losses in the playoffs by the Colts accounted for much personal monetary loss. What the hell happened? Never mind, we could be here for a while. Please be comforted with Mora's release--I am. Dungy will prove to be a very capable coach with such extraordinary talent. That guy came through for me big time in 2000. He'll come through for us now in this time of need.
I glad to hear that the 9ers arent recieving the respect that they deserve. What? Two losin seasons you say? Compare that to 8 .500 seasons across the bay before the acquisition of "Chucky" Gruden. Yea I can relate-- the 49ers werent that good in like in the early 70s. But that was waaaaay before my time so the 4-12 and 6-10 seasons will have to suffice for now. I am wondering . . .
Golla, what is your fav team? If it is from the East Coast, then you will be able to find some point in your history where your teams clashed and left bitter bruises. Although many such clashes with other teams heal over time, most fans I know are only embittered when they hear the stories on TV and elsewhere of Raider bad behavior. I mean, wouldnt it piss you off when they say they love football more than anyone else and then watch em stab/throw bottles/violate/piss on other fans? Thats just my take, and I have yet to meet a Raider fan that can hold his own in one-on-one argument. And all the people that Ive met from the East Coast have always expressed their hatred for the team.

You think he wont do good in Tampa Bay? Perhaps you're right. The pressure of living so close to home may eat at him, whatnot. The fact is, Romanowski can be Gruden's father fer cryin out loud!! To say nothing of ALL of the Raider's stars. Its always been my opinion that the Raiders have been damn lucky the last few seasons. For TIm Brown and Rich Gannon to have that much left in 'em at that point in their careers is quite remarkable, to say nothing of Davis' longevity. And youre absolutely right about your Death Star analogy. The Radiers offense, by pounding the line over and over again and inching their way up the field is exactly like an enormously well-equipped Battle Station. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif Its the minor details that are going to get you. If I can recall correctly, no Death Star ever passed the initial "testing" stage of their existence before a few of previously dsiregarded fighter shocked the universe. This was BidloKwerve's game and these were the rules. I don't have time to keep up with the scores each week. Does anyone want to host this game? Golla? If you do, I call the Vikings!
1) You will pick one NFL team, of your choice, unless it has been chosen before. 2) Scoring goes as follows: 1 point for every point scored. 25 points for a win. 10 points for a tie. 50 points for WINNING a playoff game. 100 points for reaching the Superbowl. 100 points for winning the Superbowl. But it's not without it's losses. You will lose the following amount of points this way: 1/2 point for every point allowed. 15 points for every loss. And teams CAN go into negatives. 3) This is only a game. Pick your favorite team, don't go for the team that's pushing the salary cap to the edge of the atmosphere, just take the hometown or lifelong favorite. 4) The game's deadline to join is midnight before the first season game. 5) The winner gets bragging rights for time to come!

Senator Theant
08-06-2002, 08:47 PM
WHOOOOAAAAA!!!
What happened to my niners?
Well, Spurrier had waaaaay too much to prove or start to prove before the season started. Considering the pressure he's under, real or imagined, he probably feels like he has to win big in order to prove himself in the pros.
In case you have no idea what I am talking about, the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Washington Redskins on Aug 3, in Osaka Japan by a score of 38-7. Whoophouse? Not necessarily. But certainly interesting the team that will win the Super Bowl this year.
What am I sayin? Mooch is still workin the element of surprise here, hopin to catch the league off their guard. Nobody'll suspect Mike Rumph to be the next Ronnie Lott.
What happened during the Hall of Fame game? I dont know I wasnt watching. Im waiting for the regular season to watch Madden and MIcheals working together, although I fear that relationship is doomed. Madden could be Michael's dad fer cryin out loud and Michaels speaks football 100 words a minute. Madden has wisdom, sure, but he and Pat Sumerall paced together perfectly.
"Young back to throw . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Owens makes the catch! [as small amount of enthusiams possible"

When I had heard that ABC was keeping "Munch-mouth" Michaels, I thought they had held onto the wrong guy. Sure, Miller was a fiasco waiting to happen, but that's what you get when it's all about the Nielsens.
I thought ABC, in the spirit of doing something REALLY bold, should have teamed Madden up with Dan Fouts (or, as my old man sometimes called him, Dan Faust), if only because nobody else would pair up two analysts without a play-by-play guy. I mean, the historical angle is already there what with Fouts' Chargers facing Madden's Raiders twice a season in the 70s.
The point is, ABC is sucking too much bongwater to stay stuck in the same old textbook routine. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/censored.gif

Dude, MIcheals runs the show over at MNF. It was his disgruntled opinion about BOmmer Esiason that got him kicked out of the tv booth and into the radio booth. Im not sure of the realtionship between Al and Dennis. But I know that the long time ABC announcer had problems with Dan. ITs a freakin circus, let me tell you. I read an artivcle in Sports Illustrated that Michaels said, quite boldly, that he thought Dan didnt feel comfortable enough inject his opinions into the mix of things. It was visible, too. But every time Fouts opened up his big mouth, MIchaels stuffed it again with some comment about the local pizzerias and how many Fouts ahad gobbled up. That was my impression. Stupid stuff like that. Never really picking the brain of the former CHarger QB.

I don't doubt that about Big Al. Fouts could've offered so much more to the program than Al let him.

08-07-2002, 07:55 PM
Well it seems that we have the Jets and the Steelers at 8. Should be interestting, but Im not gonna watch, that is if its on tv. ANyone?
I always thought that the preseason was only interesting to watch your own team. With all the names that are thrown out, youd like to follow 'em but you lose track. Except for the few rookies around the league that catch your eye. I even have a hard time watchin my beloved Niners battle other teams in the preseason. I find myself bored when I dont recognize players on any bench . .. but thats always around the fourtyh quarter.
Let me just say that I was soooo relieved to watch the American Bowl on tv. Another day without profootball highlights on Sportcenter and woulda lost it with all this talk of an MLB walkout. I say let 'em walk out! They would lose a whole other generation of fans while the generation of the olden golden days were entering their mid life crises. Football could do with a little bit more fans of the adolescent age range, anyways. There seems to be less and less good football debates in the classrooms, which is beginningn to worry me.

Personally, I am an Al Michaels fan. Always have been. I watched some of the Hall of Fame game and thought that the two worked well together. When Miller was around, it felt as though Michaels was trying to hard to be funny at times. As if he was trying to match wits with Miller, and that made for an awkward booth. Unfortunately, it was Fouts who suffered the most. He's one of the best analysts in the game, I'm glad that he landed on his feet in the college booth, though.
As far as pre-season goes, it is hard to watch teams other than you favorites, that's why I'm glad the Eagles play tonight!!!!!
Theant- Although I don't agree with your assesment of the 49ers going to the Bowl, I do agree with your views on Spurrier. If the Skins came out and put a couple of field goals on the board and nothing else, it would have been considered a failure. That said, come regular season, he still won't have a QB worth a damn, so he better hope that his system is as good as he says it is.

Why? Why cant I wait till we develop our rookies a little more? Simple. The next time that the Super Bowl will land on the date of Jan 26 will be somethin like 30 years (dont worry Im pretty sure, I looked). Jan 26 is my birthday. That has got to an omen. Rams are done. Warner is finished. I felt it comin all along when they won the Bowl in '00. It was only proven during the Super Bowl when as ingenuity became their Archille's heal. The Niners been playin them long enough to exploit their weakness. THe league will eventually catch on, but not until the Lambs make a few more unsuccessful runs in the playoffs. Beleive me, much will change when Garcia/Owens/Mooch finally come together this season. Hearst will have holes to run through, and safeties will watch as Hearst gobbles yardage with the play-fake. Oh yea, and count on it.

There are many deputies, but there is only one Marshall. Have you completely forgot about the BEST player in the league. Nobody holds a candle to this guy. The Niners have who? A guy that for once in his pathetic career had a decent season, which wasn't good enough to get him all the carries this year. Word is Barlow is getting a lot of them. And who else do they have to catch a ball besides Owens? Nobody. I admit that Martz had his head way up his butt in the Super Bowl, but the sun shines on a dog's ass every once in a while. The Rams just picked a bad day to have an off game. The Patty Cakes should never have been there. I don't care what anybody says, they LOST to the Raiders. That was a fumble. Maybe the Patsies are just one of those sorry teams that have the Rams number, like the Bucs. We'll see what happens on Oct. 6 in SF when they meet for the first time.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>A guy that for once in his pathetic career had a decent season, which wasn't good enough to get him all the carries this year[/b][/quote]
Have you neglected the three years Hearst nearly led the NFC in rushing yards? And the year we rode on his Pro Bowl coattails into the second round of the playoffs, in 1998? A "no one" you call him? A-N-Y-O-N-E who recovers from his broken knee injury to energize a franchise to lead the league in rushing yards is more than SOMEBODY, despite whether or not you fail to recognize it.
I sure hope they'd give the ball to Barlow more often than not. He's our future. More importantly, he's vital for our present. Our RB position has lacked in the area of speed and versatility ever since we lost Garner to the Raiders. But no worry, our kickass OL (led by the ageless Ray Brown) ensured, once again, that anybody that lines up behind the QB will have room to cross the LOS.
Speaking of options. We do lack in the area of deep threat targets. Belicheck was right about Stokes not playing in the pros the way he did at UCLA. But with the stregthened realtionship between TO, Mooch, and Jeff, much will happen. And we are awaiting the arrival for Tai Streets in to the picture. So our knock out punch will remain as it was before: and will continue to catch the league off guard, as this surging trend continues.

What exactly does Juan Dixon have to do with Baltimore. He played college hoops at University of Maryland which is in College Park and now he is playing pro ball in DC. Granted all are in Maryland but that is about as far as the comparison goes.
On more happy notes, my Bucs are now 2-1 (should be 3-0 if we had had an offensive line in Week 1) after whooping the hell out of those primadonnas from St. Louis. Tomorrow we're facing the Bengals in what I can only speculate will be the worst day of Akili Smith's life.
Speaking of which, Seanakin you are from Portland, myself living in Vancouver, and I just wanted to ask you how you felt Joey was playing so far for Detroit? I thought that he was clearly nervous in the first half last Sunday but then in the second half he came out and almost led them to the win over the Pack. I think the sky is truly the limit for him.
Seanakin
09-28-2002, 07:40 PM
Here's a Joey story for ya, courtesy of my sister's friend who went to U of O. One night she was apparently hanging out at a local bar when JH came in...she said he spent most of the night sitting quietly at the video slot machines. No party animal stuff or anything like that, almost as if he were a reluctant BMOC.
Yeah, sky's the limit for him. I saw the ending of that GB game, and despite the first three INT's, he ALMOST had that game tied. I hope he grows into the role the way McNabb has in Philly.
I should mention that my partiality involves the fact that he, like my sister, attended Central Catholic HS. A fact which annoys the Jesuit alums here at KXL. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

You work at KXL? That's cool. What do you do for them?
Yeah Joey seems like a real laid back, down to Earth, regular guy. That has A LOT to do with why he is so popular.
I play hoops with a guy that went to CCHS with Joey and he tells me that he (Joey) has always been a role model type of athlete. Something that is diminishing in the NFL with people like Randy Moss.

My Buc's defense is starting to look unbeatable and I am in awe of the fact that Brad Johnson is starting to look like an NFL Quarterback and not some overgrown douche bag from Pop Warner like he did last year.
My team is coming together and we owe it all to Jon Gruden. Coach of the Year baby.
This week's pick:
Buccaneers 27
Falcons 10

I was happy with Brad Johnson this week. He is my second string fantasy QB. And was started because IND was on a bye week. I liked Gruden when he was the offeence cordenater for the Eagles.

OK so I said that Tampa would beat Atlanta 27-10 and I was a little bit off.
Final Score
Buccaneers 20
Falcons 6
Great game by the defense. Warren Sapp with the huge pick and then the brilliance to lateral the ball to Derrick Brooks for the touchdown run. Also my boy Keyshaun came big with the 76-yard touchdown catch from B-Rad Johnson. If the offense can get a little bit more production going on their end and the defense continues to dominate as it has been, then the sky could truly be the limit this season. We've got Cleveland this weekend and then the big game against Philly. Golla and I may have to talk a little friendly smack in the weeks to come.
This weekend's pick:
Buccaneers 23
Browns 13

There is no way that my defense is going to allow Philly to score 31 points. No way in hell.
It will be a defensive battle for the most part since you've got arguably the top two defenses in the league.
I'm not going to make my prediction until sometime next week because I am still focused on this weekend. My best friend is a die hard Browns fan and he and I are having our own 'trash talk battle' as this weekend approaches.

I second Darth Arraics post!
That said, weren't the last two playoff meetings between these teams supposed to be 'defensive battles'? Hmmm...what was the combined score of those contests? Oh, that's right, it was 52-12, in favor of the EAGLES. Looks like a certain defense didn't show up, huh?
DblDwn
10-11-2002, 01:37 PM
That's very true. My defense did fail to show up on those particular Sunday's, but I do not see them making that mistake again.
The key difference between now and then is that then we were coached by "Laizze Faire Tony Dungy" and now we are coached by "In Your Face, Do As I Say Jon Gruden." Gruden will demand that the defense play nothing other than top shelf football because he knows that Philly has one of the best offenses in the league and we cannot win without stopping them.
Darth Arraics
10-11-2002, 02:40 PM
Also Gruden is going to want to put up a good showing because he was a asst. coach in Phila.
This game is very important to the EAGLES, if they don't show up next week the fagiants & cowgirls are right back in this.

Damn holding penalty at the end of the first half negated what turned out to be a critical score last night against Miami. Never mind all the coulda shoulda woulda that went on in the second half, anytime you screw your own team out of points, it's HUGE, if just on principle.
Still, if any game could embody the cliche "A game neither side deserved to lose," this was it.
Besides, I don't think I've ever seen Denver beat Miami in the regular season.....ever. Lost in '85, '98, and last night. But we got the playoff game, hehehehehehe... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sly.gif

Seanakin- Tell you the truth, at halftime, I felt that Denver would lose that game. Too many field goals. You absolutely have to get into the end zone more than that. Denver played a better game, but couldn't punch it in. Miami did, and that made a huge difference. Oh, and that holding penalty sure didn't help, either.

I wasn't crying or complaining DA. You have every right to believe that Tampa sucks but I just thought that if that is the best you can come up with then you weren't trying real hard. Anyone can say that so and so sucks but that is kind of an adolescent way to talk some trash before a game of this magnitude is it not? On the opposite side I have nothing but respect for Philly. They have a great QB, solid receivers, a decent running game, and one of the best defenses in the league.
OK let's see...........weekend prediction.............oh boy. I am extremely nervous about this game. If it was at Raymond James I would be a lot more confident but since it is in Philly I can't help but be nervous. Philly is to the Bucs like the Pistons were to the Bulls. In order to win the big one they have to get past this one team and then they truly are championship contenders.
The key factor in this game for me is going to be the defense. Tampa's defense is playing so well right now that I don't see them allowing an excessive amount of scoring opportunities for the Eagles. That being said the Bucs offense is going to have to do something because the D cannot do it alone. Whether it be Alstott coming big again like he did last week, or B-Rad deciding he wants to air the ball out and give KJ and Keenan a chance to create something remains to be seen. Something has to happen offensively in order to make this work. But since these are two of the top D's in the NFL I'll give them both some credit.
Buccaneers: 17
Eagles: 10

Seriously though, I look at the game pretty much the same way you do. Tampa's D is lights out right now. But their O just doesn't seem to be good enough again, so they will have trouble scoring points. Philly needs to rebound after that ugly Jax loss 2 weeks ago. They need to prove to the rest of the league that they can beat a contender during the regular season. Tampa is no good against moblie QB's, so Donovan will give them fits.
Overall, my earlier prediction of Philly 31, Tampa 10 doesn't seem realistic. Uhm...how about Philly 20 Tampa 13. Brad Johnson could get seriously hurt in the process.
P.S. Tampa sucks.
DblDwn
10-18-2002, 07:11 PM
Upon further review..............
It is said that defense wins championships but you have to be able to score points on the offensive end in order to win said championships. Although the offense looks promising in sporadic spurts, it still tends to fall apart on far too many possessions. So, although I am still a huge fan and will support the team through thick and thin, until Gruden gets that offense to play as one cohesive unit...............

All I got too say is thank God for the Eagles Defense! McNabb and the Offense looked bad early. But the D really won the game for the Eagles. And I give BIG slap on the back to Tampa defense, McNabb had problems with them & they are the only reason Tampa put up any points. But Dbldwn, Tampa had me thinking and worring a little. The defense is good, now all they need is a offense. And what is up with K. Johnson, the boy complains on every play. If he was showing up my QB on tv his ass would be on the bench.

Anyway, my two cents worth.
RollaFett
11-19-2002, 12:20 AM
Although it breaks my heart to see McNabb lost, for pretty much the rest of the regular season, I must disagree with your assesment Seanakin. That ankle was broken in the first quarter, playing the rest of the way did nothing to further the damage already done. Furthermore, the only reason he played the rest of the way is because it was assumed by all (team physicians included) that it was just an ankle sprain. Everything pointed to that. It wasn't until afterwards, when x-rays were taken, that they knew how severe the injury actually was. Now, you may argue why x-rays weren't taken during halftime, but it still wouldn't have accomplished anything. It still would've been broken, and he still would've been lost for 6-8 weeks.
Overall, I must say I'm very impressed with the toughness that McNabb showed, but now, a very promising season has become a big question mark for the rest of the way. Koy Detmer is no Steve Beurlein, Seanakin. The Broncos are in much better shape right now.
Seanakin
11-19-2002, 12:35 AM
Hmmmm...okay, I will admit I wasn't watching that game, nor did I find out about the injury until that night when all was known. So perhaps my perspective WAS a little skewed.
And perhaps I've gotten so used to NFL coaching staffs shutting someone down at the slightest malady that I'm not used to seeing such "guts" anymore.

Hold on, wait a minute . . . are you telling me that if the NIners had beaten Philly last Monday we would be on top of our conference, games away from home field advantage? With an undefeated divisional record, it sure as heck looks that way. That sucks!!!!!!!!!!
Boy, that game against Green Bay is lookin mighty important. It could spell the difference between a first round bye, but thats inlikely, seeing the easiness of Philly's remaining schedule. Most likely, it spells the difference between 3rd and 4th seeds, or who gets to play either Michael Vick or Aaron Brooks.

Oh yea. . . because you asked . . . my bday plans are still ungoing as planned. Despite the recent turn of events--and Andy Reid's luck charm--red and gold are still pencilled in as the main decor colors. Invitations will be sent out after Round 1 of the playoffs, so be expected 'em!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

That Packer loss was painful. Sometimes Garcia invokes memories of Joe Montana and Super Bowl championships . . . other times he reminds us of everything before the 80's. Who the hell the did he throw it to? Anybody?

Nice effort by those Browns, I thought they had that game. Oh well.
The Giants are gone, baby!!!!! Yeah!!!! They are the one team in the NFC that I was really worried about as an Eagles fan.
By the way, I predicted that Falcons win last night. Now if I only had put money on it! GRRRR!!!!!!!

Yeah, I still stand by what I said before the game... the Steelers won't beat the Browns again this season... and you know what?? They didn't...
The Steelers didn't beat the Browns... the Browns beat the Browns... no one can honestly said that the Steelers did anything in order to win that game other than take what the Browns gave them in the end... the Browns were victorious over themselves... they blew it... they committed stupid penalties and awful defense allowing the mediocre Maddox to capitalize... it's a real shame...
However, I don't knock them unabashedly... I love em still and am proud of them... but think they really should've pulled it off... it was their own fault, hands down.
RollaFett

Absolutely. Even though the running game wasn't worth a damn for the Browns, if they had run it just a few more times, the Steelers wouldn't have had enough time to rally. A run always kills more time than an imcomplete pass. Not that Kelly Holcomb had a bad game, mind you, but passing is simply not wise at that point of the game. What was Butch Davis doing on the sideline anyway?
Playoffs this weekend:
Steelers-17
Titans -26
Falcons- 10
Eagles - 28
49ers- 13
Bucs - 19
Jets -34
Raiders-24
Just my 2 cents.

Especially after Denver closed to within one Championship of them, we don't need them getting a fourth.

Congrats to Golla! The Eagles fought hard all season long, too bad they couldnt end their tenure at The Vet with a Super Bowl Season.
My 18th Bday was great just so all you guys know. THough I didnt get to see my team play in the Super Bowl, I watched the Raiders get annhiliated by the Bucs, which is just as good.
Speaking of dynasties, JOn Gruden is the Cinderella story for all assistant coaches working under the shadow of past dynasties and has now started a legacy of his own. Kudos for Tony Dungy, he deserves that trophy as does anybody on that franchise. But the Bucs couldnt have gotten the Big Game without Chucky, lets realize that.
Great season everbody!
GOOOOOO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seanakin
02-06-2003, 05:05 AM
Agreed, Dungy may be a highly qualified coach of an NFL team, and certainly it was his hard work that put that perennial loser on the cusp of greatness, but it was obvious the team needed a little less Landry and a little more George Allen in its coach.
Granted, that's hardly what made the Glazer Brothers decide on him a year ago. They were desperate and wound up paying that style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/censored.gif Al Davis a king's ransom for Chucky.
(No, RM, that's not to speak ill of Coach Landry, but for all his achievements, he obviously epitomized the stoic, seemingly unemotional type.) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
