Is there a reason why Luke wears a blak suit and a blak cloak in Return of the Jedi instead the beige/brown traditional jedi uniform? he resembled more a Sith knigth than a Jedi one.

And another question. Who are the guys that accompained the emperor to Death Star.?? They wore a kind of mitre, like bishops... or are they members or leaders of Commerce Guild?? But they are humans. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif

The people with Palpy were his advisors. Someone with access to the SWCCG could give you specific names, I presume.

As for Luke's outfit, where was he supposed to get a traditional Jedi robe? The last one he'd seen other than Yoda's was Ben's, and it was sliced up.

And, obviously, these topics are Classic Trilogy-oriented, so they belong there.

Moved.

The Jedi uniform Luke wears in 'Return of the Jedi' was what George Lucas wanted to be the Jedi uniform (if you disagree, check out "From Star Wars to Jedi," in which Lucas discusses Mark Hamill's outfit)

Early designs for the Jedi uniforms in 'The Phantom Menace' were similar to Luke's (if you don't believe me, check out 'The Art of Star Wars: Episode I), but Lucas decided to base the uniforms on Obi-Wan Kenobi's outfit in 'Star Wars' so they would be recognizable.

Well, I have seen a change in Luke´s garments that is paralel with the develop of the character:

See:

A New Hope: He dress in wihte.
Empire Strikes Back: His suit is grey.
Return of the Jedi: Black

Maybe is that Lucas wanted to simbolyze the "loosing of innocence".

Justin

I think that's just coincidental. If that was his idea, he would have said so before.

Nathan Butler

Because, of course, Lucas has revealed all of his ideas already . . .

I always believed this was true. I am sure Lucas said this in print somewhere. I think it's obvious that he was expressing Luke's transformation into adulthood and into a Jedi.

Well an EU explanation would be that in Shadows of the Empire, when Luke, Lando, and Dash decide to rescue Leia from Prince Xizor, Dash gives Luke his disquise which is the same thing he wore in ROTJ.

Just would like to point out that Luke wears a brown uniform in ESB, not gray.

Also, Nathan was right. Where would he get a traditional outfit anyway? He wasn't brought up through the Jedi ranks traditionally, hence, his clothes could very well look different.

Darth Yorch

Well, that´s true, Yoda never reffered Luke as a "padawan" and Luke never cut his hair in the way Obi Wan and his father used as apprentices.

So, being the only living jedi, Luke maybe changed some rules in Jedi regulations, as uniforms and ranks or educational method for new knights, but this is more a question of the expanded universe.

What about a martial arts reference:

ANH - white clothes = white belt
Luke is a beginner

ESB - brown clothes = brown belt
He's getting it, "but you are not a Jedi yet"

ROTJ - black outfit = black belt
"I am a Jedi, like my father before me"

I'm sure Lucas wasn't thinking this at all, it just kinda fits nicely into the description

I just made a reference to this in another post, but indeed Luke's entire outfit in ANH looks exactly like a gi, the uniform that martial arts students wear, except for the boots and utility belt of course.

Uhh...the white belt was lifted from a stormtrooper after Leia's rescue. He had on a brown belt proir to that with all sorts of gadgets on it.
Sorry, but I can get picky at times. :whatsthat:

Have a look at Anakins outfit in AOTC... his V-neck type thing.... Luke's is very similar, just different colours...

The vest of Lukes outfit was also a very dark brown/grey, not black... you have to look real close to spot it.

And it also disappears halfway into the film, as well. I always wondered where that part of his outfit went. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eh.gif

I think Anakin's colors thus far resemble Luke's throughout the OT. This could be yet another example of parallelism. White, Brown, and Black...

I read somewhere on the official site that the idea was to go "Vaderish". I mean, when Luke first walks into Jabba's palace, who did he look like with the light coming up behind him the way it was?

Lucas was out to show just how much like his father Luke had become.

No I wasn't saying his belt was white (I know it wasn't). The reference I was making was to the color of the actual outfit.
So I meant the white outfit corresponds to the white belt a novice in martial arts would have. The brown outfit corresponds to the brown belt in martial arts that someone who has a better understanding would have. And the black outfit corresponds to a black belt. I was talking about the outfit, not Luke's actual belt.
How's that for picky! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif

maybe it was to show the dark side in him??? idk, or maybe it was just to show how much he was like his father...

There's also a very good chance he has no clue as to what Jedi used to wear. Sure, he knew Obi-Wan, but how is supposed to know that he was wearing traditional Jedi robes and not just whatever old Ben pulled out of the closet that day?

James William Alexander Atreides
06-23-2005, 02:55 PM
And where did he get the robe? It looks brand new. Did he make it himself? Or did he raid OB1's closet for new clothes?
