Its funny because it seems like I'm an early bird, but I'm not really - I hadn't gone to bed yet. Lots of editing and writing kept my brain from letting me sleep, lol.:w00t:

A day late and a dollar short...seems to be a common theme these days.
Anyway, it looks really cool, and do not miss the sweepstakes registration. Some lucky geeks get a trip to London!

That Legacy revealed special turned out to be incredibly awesome!
Also, the Star Wars Tech special that was b4 it was really good too.
I hope Lucas puts those on a DVD:wink:

It will definitely be worth it:wink:

It was really cool, and Kevin Smith was unintentionally funny. Everyone's talking about these mythological and Biblical references, and Kevin says something like this:
"The Obi-Wan figure didn't really get played with much when I was a kid, but you know, Luke had to have a teacher."

Eh. It was ok, but nothing groundbreaking, IMO. I've heard most of that myth-babble for the better part of that last decade. I'm not debunking it necessarily, but it wasn't anything new. I did, however, like the tech show beforehand as well.

I thought it was like all the other shows on the History Channel: incredibly retarded.
It was just a litany of people pulling olds storys and legends out of the air: 'hey star wars is like this' 'hey star wars is like that'
Anakin on Mustafar was like him descending into hell? No, it was because George Lucas wanted him to get hurt so bad that he had to wear the suit. So not only did he get his arm and legs chopped off, he got burns all over his body and some internal damage as well.
Another woman said it was like a Greek myth BECAUSE THE SON BECAME THE FATHER. Excuse me, what??

Sorry, but the whole point of the planet Mustafar is to symbolize Hell. The whole reason he was burned was so that the Mustafar=Hell symbolism could exist.
Another woman said it was like a Greek myth BECAUSE THE SON BECAME THE FATHER. Excuse me, what??
Welcome to Greek Mythology. That kind of thing happens all the time. There's a book, called "The Magic of Myth" which takes a look at all the different mythical ideas that Star Wars is pulled from.
Sure, on the one hand Star Wars is a really fun movie to just watch and enjoy, but everything said in Legacy Revealed is true. Star Wars pulls from a bunch of different stories and mythological ideals. It's not as simple a movie as you may think.

I don't think its simple. But I don't think it was amazingly complex as they made it. Lucas got his ideas from myths and stories. But not EVERY myth and story. Not every scene and fact was based on mythology.
And Luke never became like Vader. He wasn't a son emulating his father.

Well, you may think that, but the better part of the entire saga is based on something. Hero's journey, wizards, mentors, warrior friends, bumbling sidekicks...they're things that have been prevalent in storytelling for ages.
And Luke never became like Vader. He wasn't a son emulating his father.
Maybe not on purpose, but he was following the exact same path Anakin was, they just made different choices.
Anakin was a kid who was pulled from obscurity to save teh galaxy. Along the way he lost his hand (and more) and eventually his lust for power forced him to choose the side of the Sith. He also loved the color black.
Luke was a farmboy pulled from obscurity to save the galaxy. Along the way he lost his hand, but unlike his father he made the choice of standing by his friends and the Rebels. In the end, he started wearing black in an attempt to connect with his father, whom he believed (correctly) was still alive.
Sure, Luke didn't become Vader, but they did follow the same exact path. Luke just chose the way that Anakin should have originally

I've heard it before and you can see the references in the movie itself, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't get to see all of the SW tech, but I will have to Tivo it and watch it! Thanks, JJ!

yeah, you're right. Sorry if I came off as a grump.
Another thing that turned me off on some that special was the fact I'm reading an ebook called "The Secret History of Star Wars" that really reveals a lot of the origins of the Star Wars saga and debunks some of the myth stuff we've been hearing about for years.

Interesting read, but certainly not an attempt to win favor with Lucas.

Although it wasn't exactly something new I had not read before, I still managed to enjoy it.
I do have one major quibble. They were so busy focusing upon Anakin's flaws that they either ignored or barely touched upon the flaws of the other major characters.

Yeah, it was almost entirely about Luke and Anakin. A little disappointing.

It was basically just an excuse for them to put highlights from the films on TV and they figured that would be enough to get people to like it without having to do much work on it.

You know, you're completely wrong. Sure a lot of us knew most of the info already, but isn't it easy to say we're all pretty big fans of the movies? What about those people that have seen the movies a few times, liked them, and that was that? This could've been a really intriguing and interesting show for them, and you know what else? Even though I knew all this stuff, it was STILL interesting to watch.

That reminds of something Gary Kurtz said in an interview a few years ago. He said that after ESB came out, "good enough" became the mantra around Lucasfilm. They could have done so much better on certain things, insisting on better quality, but instead they just said it was "good enough" and let some of the shoddy things go through as is, knowing that the public would just lap it up anyway.

Yeah. Even though I learned nothing new, and am sceptical over some of the myth stuff, if you're just an average fan, and not so 'into' it, then that probably was a fairly interesting special.

I caught it when it premiered. My review: it was highly entertaining and serves up a nice platter of the archetypes found in the Star Wars movies. The overall 'tone' of the special reminds me of why I loved the classic films so much. I was even pleasantly surprised at how they treated the prequel material; in my view it is very easy to rip on them but they managed to walk a fine line by focusing on the archetypes found therein without really commenting on their execution. I have to admit it gave me a little more respect for the prequels. Not to appreciate them as movies but that some of the basic groundwork was ok.

finally watched it today, I liked it. I always enjoy seeing them draw refrences and connections to History and Star Wars. but 2 hours might have been a bit extreme. Still nice to have seen it.

Well, yes, we here have probably all seen most of this before in one format or another but the important thing, at least to me, was that most of the world really doesn't know about the origins or the intentions of Lucas. For this reason alone, I was very happy to see everything gathered into one program and that this program, due to it being on the History Channel, will enlighten many more people. And for me personally, the next time someone asks me, "Why Star Wars anyway?" (and they still do) I can steer them in this direction.
