I didn't manage to dig up anything like this, but I hope I'll be corrected if wrong....
I love costumes and plan for Halloween months in advance. I figure on a Star Wars forum there must be other costume lovers. So post your pics here! Let's see your awesome creations. Star Wars and non-Star Wars alike... a few details on actualizing the costumes would be fantastic as well.
Here are my last two Halloween costumes: Aayla Secura (background lamely whited out) from the year before last, and She-Ra from last Halloween.
Great fun, though the blue body paint was a pain to remove.

Well, I don't really ever go anywhere to dress up. Halloween is not a big thing here, just a few annoying kids going trick or treating and throwing eggs at your windows if you don't give them anything. So I have no pics of me in any costumes.
As for your costumes, Aayla is good, but wow, you have really brought She-Ra to life, you look amazing! You are welcome to drop into Nef's, where I am her yard boy, any day! :w00t:

The secret to the She-Ra wrist guards?
Yogurt pots.
And spray paint.
Who's wearing a costume to C4 / CE?
Another costume maker, yay!! Right now I'm finishing/fixing my brother's Obi-Wan costume for C4. I really rushed it to get it done for Halloween and I hadn't bought enough cloak fabric... But It's almost done now! Here's a pic from Halloween. The boots are way too dark :( I tried to paint them, but I think they need another coat now *sigh*
I made the Padme costume for C3, but I created the headdress the following Halloween. It's made out of sculpy! I just ordered some beads that are more accurate to replace the originals for C4. That same Halloween I made my brother Tyler (Greedo Boy) a black Jedi cloak. He didn't give me enough notice, so the rest of his costume was made out of a black turtleneck, sweatpants, cowboy boots, and a t-shirt cut up to look like tabards and obi! :D
I have all the fabric for his black Anakin costume (I even have the real undertunic fabric they used in the movie!!). I dyed it all and even mostly sewed the outer tunic, but he'll have to wait till next Halloween for it to be completed. My next projects for myself will be the ANH Leia and Padme's navy linen/lace dress from ROTS :)

Ah, yes, i'm quite proud of the lekku, i must admit. A clever concoction based on a winter hat... they're all sewn and not latex, but they turned out well. My roomie was a dear and wore the hat while i stitched and glued things in place. It was deceptively heavy, however, and my traps hurt quite a bit the day after Halloween....

Who me.......:innocent:.......Thank you for the compliments. I found out from talking to Jeremy Bulloch that I am almost exactly the same height and weight that he was back when they filmed RoTJ, so I guess it was just a matter of time (and money) before I put together a Fett costume. Wearing that costume gave me a new level of respect for Jeremy. I was really warm walking around in the hotel, I can't imagine what it was like out in the desert.

All the pics in this thread are awesome.
DC, yours, as always are hot. :like: And ridiculously accurate!

Sarah - how long did it take you to do that hair? It looks brilliant! I have no time for doing hair - that's why I shave all mine off!
Coyote - that Fett costume is awesome, I thought it was a still from when they shot the movie at first, not a costume you had made!

Are you a costume fan in general, Coyote, or just Fett? I mean, not that Fett should be considered "just" as though he's not enough (Fett would always be enough!)... just curious to know if there are others in which you'd put in similar effort. I'd love to see!

Here's my Hermione costume from before my jaw surgery and when I had really really long hair :P I made the wand, skirt and robe. Bought pretty much everything else, though I added the stripes to the sweater with fabric paint.
This isn't anything new, but at CIV I forgot to bring safety pins to keep the wraps stay in back, so I was forced to kind of tuck them up and under to have them stay. I admit it does look much better as a midriff dress, but I spent most of the day with my purse in front of my stomach... lol. Oh, and I redid the beading so that it was much more accurate. I pincurled my hair, but the 'extension' I brought with me didn't curl, and my headdress re-broke in my luggage! *shrug* The other Padme is Kay_Dee who is a phenomenal seamstress! I kept running into her in her various costumes and finally got a photo with her on the day I had my costume on! It was a pretty cool honor.

In honor of Halloween, I am stepping up on costume posting, and resurrecting photos of Halloweens past....
As soon as I scan them. Which may or may not happen in October.
This, however, is a last-minute costume i threw together for the Renaissance Festival in September. It was great fun. I feel especially proud of the artfully cut up extra large men's dress shirt that I finagled into being part of my top.
I am also quite proud of how very tan I managed to get this summer (yes, that is quite tan for me).

I was taking a walk and pondering the Ren Fest and thinking: "well, i have a skirt and a corset i could wear, but what about a blouse?" And i had the idea to see if a button-down shirt might work, tried it with one of mine, and then bought a very large white shirt at the Salvation Army. I cut off the collar and shoulders and removed the buttons, then tied ribbons through the sleeves. Voila! Instant wench blouse!

Costume advice help needed!
I am making plans for a new costume, and it will involve a customized lightsaber. I have a cheap-o plastic lightsaber i'm hoping to modify. The best idea i've had for this so far is to make and bake the extra pieces i need out of Sculpee and then super glue them in place. Some of the pieces could be sizable, but i can't really bake them onto the lightsaber without melting it.
Anyone have other suggestions? Leia? Flo?? Anyone?

Sorry for my delay, Flo....
It is just a cheap, plastic lightsaber i'm hoping to convert. Here is a link to what it looks like:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2264550
I have plans for a Tenel Ka costume, and so am hoping to get something that looks like a rancor fang attached to the end, and maybe put some scales as well to help it transition. I will probably only cover half of it, and leave a gap at the end of the hilt for the clip so that it can go on my belt. I could also cover the clip and attach to my belt by other means, however (i cleverly put a mobile phone clip on my other plastic lightsaber for the Aayla Secura costume - it was very cool).
If you have brainstorms, i'd love to hear it. No deadline for this costume - just something i'm pondering for fun, because, yes, i am that big of a nerd....

It's quite light - comes in a variety of colors - i have white and will paint it. It is a kind of clay thing, but it stays soft until one bakes it in the oven at a low temp (250 F or something like that) - it is glue-able and paint-able, or that's how it's touted. I used it with success for the Gryffindor badge i made for my Prof. McGonagall costume.
Now that i've had a look at the link Leiaflo posted, though, i'm considering going all out for a custom lightsaber, and getting a length of pipe cut (metal), which i would be able to put in my oven at 250 without melting it (i think).

The drawback is the lack of extendable blade, which is always good dramatic fun. :saber:
I do think the metal piping is the way to go in this situation, though!

I use the Rubies Supreme Vader and MR Sig Edition Vader together.
Trouble with the cape is, it attaches to the breastplate and is far too heavy and pulls the plate up, almost choking you, so I've resolved that by velcro and a separate chain and had a few alterations done.

Seriously, Oran, i will make you the cape!

:w00t: Oh, please do!!
I'd even make you the cape if you're really going to do it....
Awesome - that's the bit I was worried about as I can just about darn a sock, but making a whole cape is a bit beyond me!
I can see it already...
FMUTAWABMVACMM, that is the funniest thing I think I have ever, ever, ever, ever...I could go on...ever seen! I must spread some love before I can rep you for that!
I'm still chuckling away to myself.
Seriously, Oran, i will make you the cape!
I may well take you up on the offer.

What will you do for the helmet?
Or will you just wear a manky rag over one eye a-la Daisy Wenham?
Orandhite
01-08-2008, 12:30 PM
^ I'm glad I read this before JMH did, although I'm sure he'll pop in and comment. :D
I would probably try to make a mold from chicken wire or something, then papier mache onto that. I might need to add something inside it to make the helmet a bit heavier. It's going to be tricky as it needs to sit on without a chin strip...
I'd probably try just a normal helmet, not the king's one - maybe that could be the second attempt!
I am also wondering how to make the pants...
Darill Cyllem
01-08-2008, 12:39 PM
For the pants, i'd recommend getting a garmet approximately the shape you already want (e.g. a speedo) and sewing fabric (e.g. pleather) strips on top of it in the desired fashion.
For the helmet... hmmm.... i don't remember what they look like. I'll get back to you with a suggestion....
Do you need greaves as well? I made a semi-successful pair of greaves by painting some football (soccer) shin guards a while back. You could try hockey pads for something more substantial.
Orandhite
01-08-2008, 12:43 PM
That's a good idea for the pants and the greaves - I think the greaves cover the knee as well, so I would need either hockey pads or could try to get some smallish cricket pads which should work quite well.
Darill Cyllem
01-08-2008, 12:49 PM
For the helmet... i might try something similar for the helmet as for the pants. Sew / glue stuff onto a hat. You could make it look more realistic by adding details with a modeling clay like sculpee. A combination of stiff vinyl and thin foam could work well.
Looks like you also need some arm thingies (i don't know the word for them). I used empty yogurt pots for my She-Ra costume, which i painted, and that worked pretty well for me. But it looks like you need longer ones for your costume, and you probably have longer arms than i do as you're taller than I am. I think you could so something convincing out of stiff vinyl or thin foam - same stuff as for the helmet.
The She-Ra head dress i made had wings made out of this thin foam stuff from a craft store, which took spray paint quite nicely. I can't remember the name of it, but probably you'd have different stuff/brands in the UK anyway.
I'm sure there are also replicas of varying quality you could just buy on-line, but that, imo, is not as fun....
Orandhite
01-08-2008, 01:06 PM
^ Great ideas, thanks DC! :)
There are some really good quality replicas online which I want to buy anyway (I am a rather big fan of the movie (which means I like the movie a lot, not that I am huge - although I am carrying a bit too much holiday weight!)) which is where I got the idea from for the costume. You can get the sword, helmet and shield online so I might use those to work from and to check that it looks good.
But you're right - not as much fun. :D

I hope you'll keep me posted on what you're doing - i was hoping this thread could have some discussion of the specifics of costume making.

well, it was kinda rushed so the makeup isn't that great =)
heaps of star wars costumes (storm trooper, snow trooper, vader, admiral ackbar (favourite), queen amidala ...yes I have!), but only star trek makeup - Cardassian, Vulcan, Cheronian (sp?) and a Ferengi.
also done a few home grown aliens
I left all my photos in oz tho :(

there's not that many photos actually - we use to do a lot for other groups or shows or private partys etc.
I've been Admiral Ackbar in a musical stage production in front of 3000 raging queens at the Queens Ball, to a Strike Clone at a state gov's science n technology expo.
but the best was as a Cardassian at a techno rave, which we were performing at after going to the costume parade at a star trek con
why haven't u done a leia slave girl yet???

Who's the fool, the fool, or the fool that follows the fool, or the fool that may not be the fool but thinks about following the fool, or is that just foolish? Now I'm confused.
I need to think about a costume at some point, if you bunch of geeks are going to make me attend another convention! Maybe I'll 'do a Theropod' and wear a slave-Leia outfit of my own. Then, there will be so many people poking their eyes out that I will be able to get into the shows quickly and have plenty of space and get through the shop quickly. Now there's a thought! But hold that, I shall think about DC and Flo in costumes for a moment yet. :superhappy:

I wish I could have a Leia costume... but from ESB, in Hoth or Bespin... cause I don't want the metal bikini (neither does my husband in fact ;) ), and I don't have enough hair to look like ANH Leia...
But still, they don't sell these and I don't have a sewing machine !!!
