six years have passed since the events from Jedi Outcast, Kyle Katarn is now an instructor in Luke's Jedi Academy, you are one of the padawans there, you can customize your character's species and gender, you will be sent in various missions and you can choose your path (darkside or Lightside) that's all I know style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif but it sounds great.

Hold up the Yuuzhan Vong don't come in until 21 years after the Battle of Endor. Jedi Outcast is 9 years after. Do the math: 9+6=15 years. Sorry but no Vong for 6 years. And how can you smell the Vond without dying?

What happened in Mysteries of the Sith?
Frendon

Mysteries of The Sith is considered just an expansion pack for Jedi Knight that is why they don't count it as another game, in Mysteries of the Sith Kyle took Mara Jade as his apprentice, you start as kyle then he goes in a secret mission to an ancient Sith planet and you start playing as Mara Jade by the end of the game you fight Kyle who has been seduced by the darkside, you bring him back, end of the game.

Source: Gamers with Jobs (http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=292&mode=flat&order=0&thold=0)
One of my many and varied sources has sent me a translated version of the Jedi Knight III interview posted in Gamestar's magazine. It's not too long but now that we know this thing is for real we might as well have a look!
Read on for the interview.
Q: Why are you still using the Q3-engine?
A: We got to know that engine very well over time so now we can do things we thought we couldn't do when we made JK2, things your readers haven't seen before! Also, better hardware allows us to do more. For example, we now can use notably more curved surfaces.
Q: Why don't we get to play Kyle Katarn anymore?
A: We didn't want to repeat ourselves, we’d rather try something new instead. We also didn't want to run into trouble with the logic of the story since Kyle becomes a mighty Jedi knight at the end of JK2. Don't worry, he'll play an important role in JK3 nonetheless.
Q: Was it your idea to focus on the sword fights or did you do it because JK2 fans demanded it?
A: Both. To be honest, when we started developing JK2 we were very skeptical about whether the sword fights would work or not. Shortly before we finished working on the game we realized how fun they were. Press and fans shared that opinion, so it was clear that we were going to feature more of that in JK3.
Q: How are you going to keep the tension up during the whole 30 hours the single-player mode is supposed to take?
A: We'll feature an incredible variety of levels. Instead of switching the 'theme/location' every third or fourth mission players will get to see new themes, locations and styles every mission with varied visuals and game play.
Interview translated from Gamestar magazine.
Ok, I know you're here for the interview but I insist you have a look at our Vietcong Impressions. It's a sleeper hit in the making and many of you may miss out on it otherwise. That would be a crying shame.

Hi everyone,
i have the gamestar with this interview and there is one question missing in the translation:
Q: WHY DO YOU MAKE A NON-LINEAR CAMPAIN?
A: The hole game is about decisions: dark or bright side of force, what abilitys am i going to set points on? It was only naturally that the player could do what he wants in mission choosing, too.Nevertheless we will tell a dramatic story, like we did in JK2.

Yeah and the whole thing about Kyle almost turning to the dark side, I'd say if you have to take the roll of Mara Jade and fight Kyle it's reasonable that he does turn dark on us.
Frendon
04-02-2003, 07:36 PM
Yeah I know, Mysteries of the Sith doesn't have the best story but in the game Kyle does take Mara as his apprentice, that's why I don't even consider it part of the Kyle Katarn saga, and you don't actually fight Kyle, well if you try to fight him you will get killed, he is invincible in the game, the only way to win the final level is to turn off your lightsaber, Kyle can't kill his apprentice, and he returns to the lightside, you see if he can't put himself together and kill his apprentice then he never actually turned to the darkside, that's the way I see it.

Saw this on one of the JK2 sites. The official name for the new game will be Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Here's the rest of the news blurb, not sure if there's anything new here, but I'll post it anyway:
In Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, you will be able to create your character as well as construct your own lightsaber from handle to blade color!
Star Wars® Jedi Knight®: Jedi Academy™ allows players to immerse themselves in the classic Star Wars universe as they take on the role of a student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Master Luke Skywalker. Players will interact with famous classic Star Wars locations and characters while facing the ultimate choice: fight for good and freedom in the light side or follow the path of power and evil to the dark side.
Players can create their own characters by defining various characteristics, such as species, gender, clothing and physical attributes allowing for a more personal experience before entering the academy to learn the powers - and dangers - of the Force.
Construct your own lightsaber from handle to blade color. Utilize two if you prefer or try the ultimate dual-bladed lightsaber made famous by Darth Maul.
Unique tiered level selection allows players to choose their adventure and the missions they take based on the skills they need to become the ultimate Jedi Knight.
Additional multiplayer modes add depth to the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight legacy. Players can partake in a variety of unique modes.
New vehicles, weapons and Star Wars environments enhance players Star Wars experience.

<span style="color:green">Wow, this is either going to be great, or absolutely terrible. It all depends on how it's implemented. If they do everything right, it'll rule. But if they try and fit too much into one thing then the finished product will suffer because of that.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy
Yep, this would be Jedi Knight IV, technically, since Dark Forces II was the first time that the Jedi element of the game came into major force. And as such, this would technically be the fifth Dark Forces title.

I've got a bad feeling about this...
JK2 was nowhere near as good as JK. JK2 had some of the most tediously crap levels in an FPS (I love walking blind through a mine shooting at face hugging ticks. great.) and some very poor end of level bad guys. The forgettable bad guy at the end was ludicrously hard unless played on easy.
Considering Raven have said it has LESS puzzles (like JK2 was bursting with them?) and more action I can only see this being an even more shallow version of JK2.
Lobot
07-29-2003, 11:55 PM
Yea but this game doesn't seem as much story driven, it more strikes me as more of a UT-style game. So I could imagine it would have less puzzles. When I say UT-style game, it more or less is just like the single player in that game. Where you play level by level, working your character up (it will obviously be more geared towards working on your character in JK:JA). I'm not sure, what does everyone else think...

First Star Wars RPG (and a VERY good one at that) vs. yet another Dark Forces/Jedi Knight game?
I seriously doubt that.
Never seen so many people buy a gaming system just because of one game coming out in my life until KOTOR, it'll be hard for any other (SW) game to top it, except maybe Halo 2 or Galaxies when it's finally released on X-box, or perhaps a sequel to KOTOR.

Yeah, KOTOR is an entirely different game. Personally, I'd play both. That's what my friend is doing. Jedi Academy is a little more than a rehash though. It doesn't go as far as I'd like it to but it feels more like Star Wars than a lot of games have lately.

You might have to try Ebay or amazon.com, because I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I don't even know if Lucasarts still sells it through their site. A freind let me borrow his copy.
It's an okay game. Some of the missions are complex, and getting to some of the secret areas is a pain in the butt. Their are some really cool new Force powers, however, and it's neat seeing how the Jedi Knight cames influenced what we see the Jedis do in the PT (Kyle Katan was using Force Speed and Force Push two full years before we saw Qui Gonn do it in TPM!)

In that case, let me say this.
I have had the opportunity to play the game. In fact, I played through it 3 times and plan on buying the game when it comes out. I'll need to upgrade my video card since I'm still using my onboard video and had to play the game on 16-bit color depth. I think it feels more like Star Wars than any other game in the JK series. I'm actually hoping they release a JK Trilogy pack since I've lost my copy of JK, and my copy of JO that my friend burnt me (yes, in our small circle of friends we share games) would flip out after the fifth or sixth level.
I had my doubts at first that they would start running the series into the ground with Jedi Academy. Luckily, I was wrong.

So do those of you who've played the demo agree that it feels a lot more like Star Wars than other SW games? I think it does.
bodhisattva yoda
09-08-2003, 05:58 PM
and is the lightsaber combat improved?
Smeghead
09-08-2003, 06:58 PM
<span style="color:green">Miasma: I dunno, I've always thought the Dark Forces games felt very Star Wars-y, but so do games like TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. But those are the only other SW games I've really played alot of.
If you didnt like JK II's saber combat, odds are you won't like JA, 'cause it looks like there'll be even more saber fighting in this one. You still block automatically, which is the only way i could possibly imagine it working. Lightsaber combat is too fast for a manual block button.
But it is expanded. There's lots of new moves, some for the new saber types, of course, but alot of them for the existing fighting styles too. I've only played with Fast style, but there's a neat one where you roll forward, and as you come out of the roll you stab. You can also pull enemies towards you and impale them on the saber. But I still havent gotten the cartwheel move to work for me yet.
After I get back from class, I'll try some other styles and see how they work.</span>

would somebody explain to me how the combat works then? i beat JK 2, but i don't think i ever fully understood it. is it as simple as facing your enemy to block, and just bearing whatever direction to swing a certain way and trying to keep your distance just right? is that all there is to it?
Smeghead
09-08-2003, 11:25 PM
<span style="color:green">I got it off FilePlanet.
Bodhi: Well, kinda. There are some combos and stuff that you can do, plus the force powers and the different fighting styles. The problem was, the combos took a little guess work, but it looks like they'll be easier to pull off in JA. There's even a whole menu in your mission breifing section (When you hit "TAB") that shows how to do them.</span>

I thought the customization thing was going to be different, i mean is not that great, I've liked everything else, the new moves, stances and all, plus there is a lot of future for the modding community, once we figure out how to put the models that were done for Jedi Outcast this game will be even great, I would like to see if I can get my Vader level in there too, even though I kind of abandon it.

I got the game recently and it seems more like a Jedi Outcast v2.0 rather than a new game. It looks and plays an awful lot like JO. Aside from the new lightsaber styles and modes of Multiplayer(Multiplayer is currently very laggy) it doesn't seem to offer as much new content as you would expect. Secondly, the character customization is not nearly as indeapth as they made it out to be.

But for some reason, no matter what I do, I can't make it so I can steer the vehicles. I can go forward and backward and use weapons but I can't turn left or right. I can't even turn left or right using the keyboard keys. The only way I can turn is by using the mouse.
I'd appreciate any insight because I am stumped. There doesn't appear to be a section on vehicle control in the instruction manual.

Also...I'm stuck! Maybe someone can tell me how to get past this part. I'm on the level (I forget the name) where you have to escape prison and you no longer have your lightsaber. The most recent mission objective says I need to find the hangar. But I can't find it! I've walked around aimlessly for over an hour. It's probably something really stupid that I'm overlooking. Nevertheless, I can't beat it. Please help!

<span style="color:#000070">Not sure if you still need help, but that part got me too for awhile since the way to the hangar is rather hidden. Head to the hall where you can a good view of the hangar, but all the doors are locked. (I believe there were a few cloaked troopers in this hall) The entrance to that hall is near the balcony that the imperial officers(who's name I can't remember) assaults you with his rifle, right off of the courtyard where you can roam around in the ATST's. At any rate, once you step foot in that room, go around the left side and you'll find a hallway that leads to where you want to go. Becareful, the hallway blends in perfectly with the walls and you will miss unless you know what you're looking for.</span>
I sweapt through that level. I guess its just luck. Did you get to that part where you blast through a wall with the targetting screens?

I noticed especially with Luke style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif I also found some of the levels to be really boring. Most were great fun but a few, like the castle level with the acid rain, were slow and boring. I also felt that the fighting was too repetitive because you always had to fight the pair of cultists (one with a saber one using force powers). The fights were too easy so it just seemed to drag the momentum of the game.
I preferred Outcast because it gave me a chance to use better strategies and make the most of my weapons. It seemed more stealth.

The graphics were basically the same. It is the same engine with a few improvements.
You say the fighting was too repetitive, but how is fighting more dark jedi any different than fighting groups of stormtroopers? Not much. You use guns on troopers and sabers on jedi. And this game is clearly centered around the lightsaber combat that Jedi Outcast was not. I for one like the saber centered encounters as opposed to the ones catered to weapons. I just used force lightning to clear away the masses of stormtroopers anyway, not much difference than firing away with a concussion rifle.

^because it was always the same thing. One force user, one saber/force user and I killed both the exact same way in almost every confrontation. By the end of the game I was rolling my eyes because I was bored. I prefer Outcast because it let you mix it up a bit plus the puzzles were harder and more thoughtful. I found Jedi Academy very linear.
I did enjoy Jedi Academy however and all the new worlds were awesome especially Coruscant but then again.. I'm a Coruscant junkie, it's my absolute favourite planet in the Star Wars universe style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
I thought ta alot of the encounters were un ique and I loved the lightsaber dueling. I think though that the other weapons were pointless I didnt use them much. Also those thermal detonators were crap. IN episode 1 they were awsome.

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif Along the lines of character customization, here are a few cheats that came from jediknight.com (or .net, I can't remember):
Press SHIFT + ~ to bring down the menu thingy. Type in devmapall to activate cheats. Then, type in playermodel and then whatever character in the game you want to be. (Make sure to find the model name in the assets1 pk3 file). Try a few of these:
playermodel boba_fett
playermodel jawa
playermodel kyle (if you're missing JO)
Being a Jedi Jawa is fun. Ooooo!! Also, if you try the Boba Fett one, you can use his jet pack too! Just press jump twice real fast, and then use your arrow keys to manuever left to right and use the jump and crouch buttons to maneuver up and down. Land on the ground and the jet pack deactivates. It's awesome!!!
Ill try that. Also you can spawn other characters to fight against as you wish. Jawa time.

Oh, you will have a problem when you change to a "bad guy" character. The good guys will start attacking you! There is a way around this, though:
Type notarget (deactivates AI) then type in:
playerteam player
enemyteam enemy
Then type in notarget again to reactivate AI, and BATTABOOM!!! Everything's back to normal.

Can anyone elaborate on their experiences using the multiplayer feature? I haven't tried it yet (I need to get better) but I was wondering if it was fun, easy to use, etc. Also, do you have to know other people who have the game (and schedule a time at which you're all on line) in order to play them or can I just pop in the game, click on multi-player and be connected. I have never played a multi-player game on line before so I am curious how it works. The instruction booklet was jibberish to me. Thanks! DW

Uh, dude, if your computer is running on 1.5 hertz, I'd seriously consider a major upgrade. But I assume you meant to put gigahertz, since 1.5 megahertz is still way too slow.
My suggestion is get at least 128 megabytes of more RAM (that'll make 256 MB, perfectly ideal for running Academy). After that, consider getting a better graphics card that has at least 64 MB memory. If you can, get an ATI Radeon 9800, but I'm just biased on ATI stuff.
But, for now, you can play Academy. Heck, I've got 128 MB of RAM and an ATI 32 MB All-In-Wonder Pro AGP with Rage-128 graphics accelerator, and I can still play Academy.

SPOILER: Jaden goes to Korriban to get the power of the Sceptor of Ragnos for himself. It's pretty much the same action-wise, but it's harder belive it or not. You have to fight cultists and Jedi. Finally, you reach the tomb of Ragnos and fight Tavion. When you defeat her, Kyle comes in and tries to stop you. He ends up getting the sceptor away and it calls for a classic battle: the misguided padawan against his Master. Once you defeat Kyle, you grab the sceptor and bury him under rocks. You escape and Luke comes in to find Kyle recovering.
The story is left open either way. I wonder if Raven will come out with an expansion pack for this game to continue the story, that way we don't have to wait for a totally new game...
