Communications?

Hi, I was reading some Star Wars books and I was thinking, how do ships communicate over great distances, becuase the communication signals wouldn't be able to go faster than light?

Can anyone give any ideas?

I think they used CB radios like truck drivers in the 70's.

Yes, but a CB Radio signal can't go faster than the speed of light, and even if it could move at the speed of light, and if two ships are, say, 50 Lightyears away, then the signal would take 50 years. Any ideas?

I'm not being what you call a "literalist". I'm just trying to answer the original question asked by Nilo Karr. That question is being asked from a "literalist" point of view.

Well, why not. Most people agree that good science fiction movies are the ones where gadget that being used in the movie are somehow related with real life or sicientific researches.

They were travelling at the speed of light. This has been the dream of every scientist since the speed of light was corretly calculated and believe me my friends, it is still being researched with incredible budgets.

Intelligent robots. Many companies and research institutes are working on artificial intelligence, while companies like Honda builds the robot that walks on two feet like human beings which actually is a very hard balance problem.

Laser is being widely used in our life in many fields. Examples can be increased.

Under these circumstances it not weird to wonder how people can communicate in space through very long distance. In my opinion, they were using a big network of satellites, because in TPM they became aware of the invasion when their communications were distrupted.
