Hey folks, I've been lurking around here for some time already, finally decided to register. Looks like a good community to me!
I'm from Lucasforums, currently helping out with a mod called the Open Jedi Project. It's a mod that aims to change the many aspects of JA that people hated, one of which is the saber combat system. Many new features have also been added, such as an experience system and new force powers/weapons
Regarding our new combat system, all its mechanics have been changed. Most games released by Lucasarts are arcadish in lightsaber combat (maybe TFU will change that), but OJP creates an authentic saber combat system that makes the game feel like KOTOR or even the movies. Check out the 2nd official trailer I did for it (not exactly what I'd call professionally done though)

That trailer features an older version of OJP. ATM we have many new changes since previously - our skills system has undergone many changes, and we have some new animation replacements that make saber combat...well almost movie realistic. It's like playing KOTOR while being able to control your character's every motion
In JA, combat was very generic and standard - you just ran about, swinging your saber left right, hoping that your opponent would run into it. There was almost 0 chance of parrying your opponent's attack, regardless of whatever you did. OJP however makes saber combat very tactical. You can't run around while attacking now. Parrying is skill based. Blocking is automatic, but you lose dodge points - another new concept in OJP - if you fail to parry the attack (parry != block). Hard to elaborate in words though, check out another trailer here

We're getting ready for the big V1 release soon. OJP is planning to focus on co-op. ATM since most of the mappers are pretty busy, we'll be releasing something simple out of the box (er internet) eg. "defend the base" maps, where Imperial troops will keep respawning and you have to just score as many kills as possible. Co-op is going to be awesome, especially with the new saber combat system and animations - I guarantee you that every round will be an unforgettable experience. Of course, we're keeping the good ol game modes in, such as FFA, but the mappers are dedicated to creating something epic and movie-like. Admit it, fighting side by side with another friend against 20 stormtroopers...that's magic :
If you have any questions or queries on OJP's plans or progress, do not hesitate to ask in this thread!
