Fellow delagates, I haven't seen this in disscussion, and it has always plauged me. In The Empire Strikes Back [eps V] when the nobel, fearless Captain Needa takes on the responsibility for "losing" the Millinium Falcon while in pursuit and takes a shuttle to inform Lord Vader, the dark lord of the Sith's reaction is not surprising. One force choke to the throat of Captain Needa later, the good captain falls to the floor and is dragged out by 2 imperial soldiers. Now, call me insane or what, but I always got the distinct impression that Lord Vader didn't kill Captain Needa, just force choked him to the brink of life and let him live.

And I realize that George Lucas could have added a scene where we see Captain Needa in the med bay being tended to by droids and Obi-Wan is there urging him to pull through and Captain Needa tells Obi-Wan that there is still good in Vader, but that just didn't happen. And it seems no secret shots have been made in this regard either.

Any-hoo, did Captain Needa survive the force choke or not? The reason I give for being under the impression that Vader did not kill him is the fact that Captain Needa took responsibility and owned up to the failure, and told the dark knight so to his face. That in my book will keep you alive even if you did mess up. And Vader even if he is a ruthless Sith, could see the value of honesty in the face of doom, and allow the poor blighter to see the light of day after failure with a sore throat for the rest of his life.
Senators, your thoughts and opinions please:

333. EXT VADER'S STAR DESTROYER - SPACE
FULL SHOT - Fleet around Vader's Star Destroyer with second Star Destroyer in the foreground.

334. INT VADER'S STAR DESTROYER BRIDGE - CONTROL DECK
The dead body of Captain Needa lies at the feet of Darth Vader. Two stormtroopers pick it up and carry it quickly away as Admiral Piett and two of his captains hurry up to the Dark Lord.

Maybe the actor didn't sell it to you that he was dead. He should have gone to the Motti School of Choking.

I remember hearing or reading something the actor said about his death throws. How he figured out how to make the vain in his neck . . . or head throb.

I believe George intended him to be dead.

I believe he is killed by the choke. But when you watch him being carried off he does help the 2 officers carrying him.

It probably wasn't picked up at the time of shoot or GL ran out of money or it was picked up too late and was too late to reshoot that part of the scene if it was.

Or the Mark Hamill school of acting

He was dead. The actor made a mistake, and they obviously missed it or opted for no reshoot. They should have had him fall the other direction, or had the officers come in from the other side, and dragged him out backwards.

Logical or not, that's how Vader dealt with mistakes. It has long been known that he has suffered from anger management issues. If Vader had directed ESB, he would have surely eliminated someone over Needa's 'lively' performance. Probably the actor himself.

That's a very interesting concept ... Mr. Vader directing a major motion picture. :scratchchin: He would definitely be in charge of the production, that's for sure. I wonder how he would deal with union rules, etc.
