Hey all of my friends say it is just wierd that I collect star wars books. I own twenty-five or more novels. Is it wierd that I collect novels? tell me what you think.

Personally, I don't think so at all. I have only just started reading SW books and so I only have 5. But I intend to buy all the novels, so log as each 'series' maintains my interest. I am unsure as to whether the 'young adult' Jedi series would be worthwhile though.

thanks for making me not feel so alone out there. And yes the 'young adult ' jedi novels are pretty good.

Being a librarian, I collect all sorts of books. I currently have over 110 SW books, including more than 60 novels and 20 young adult novels.

It's when you start collecting copies of the same book that you are weird... I have 25 copies of the World According to Garp. I am a freak.

Nah....you just really like that book

Cydon
01-26-2007, 02:31 AM
Hell no! I have exactly 117, 483 books. Not all novels, but you should see my private library. It has three stories with a "sunken" floor. (of course, the third floor is a little empty) I'll try to find my digital camera with pics of it. (that is, if you want to.)

And I am not full of **it. Man, try to share something cool and get bad rep. Funny, no one except DS has signed his name for bad rep.

Ha! Off topic, but as admin I had to go see what you were talking about. Only three people have given you bad rep and you have given out 15 bad reps and never once signed your name. So there.

Those look like encyclopedias. And how is that 100 thousand books?

I have lots of books that are boxed up at them moment and some over at my parents house that I don't have room for! I used to have a Nancy Drew collection but sold them to Half Price books. I will never do that again. They hardly gave me anything for it. I'd rather give my books to a library than take them to Half Price!

I don't even know how many SW books I have. My husband would say too many! LOL

I got close to a 1,000 books, every Fantasy novel I have are in both paperback and hardcover, I got a few SW hardcovers etc..

I plan on constructing my own library someday, nothing like Cydon's mind you. :P

There's nothing wrong with collecting SW books! I have been doing so for over 20 years now, and I do not plan to stop (I even collect the young-adult novels, as well as the ones aimed at the very young like Star Wars Junior)...

Collecting Star Wars stories is a wonderful 'obsession'... :)

word to the wise never buy used SW books from amazon they always end up looking like crud!

btw SW book collecting way cool!!! your not weird or any thing its just a healthy part about SW it has you using your brain instead of burning your DVD player and playing video games all day.

books are great! I have most of the SW paperbacks up to NJO,not counting the young jedi series. a whole box of just Conan books, a bunch of dragonlance and forgotten realms, theives world, wheel of time, on and on. Some people watch reruns of sitcoms and dramas, and their favorite movies over and over, some of us re read good books.

If you have wheels and do not mind digging around I recomend the used book stores in your town. Usually about half price and if the book is beat up you can chew them down a bit or just wait to find it again. I'd say half or more of my P-backs were bought used, if the orignal owner took good care of them, and you do too, you can have the book for 20-30 years. Do not take your books to sell though, no matter the condition they won't give you much for them. When I cull my collection I just offer them to neighborhood kids, and drop the rest off at a thrift store or slavation army store, etc.

I usually go to used book stores to get my hardcovers and the bulk of my Star Trek novels came from used book stores.

The store I frequent the most is Biblioasis, I 've been going there for about 6 years http://www.biblioasis.com/index.php they have this one book behind a glass case worth $8,000, I have no idea what it is or what it's about, but it's big and impressive looking.

Anyway, call me crazy, but I could spend hours in a used bookstore just looking around.

There is no real define place to start. Most EU novels include meandering information dumps that recaps previous novels. Then again not knowing what happened before might help you when everything goes kafkaesque on crank when a manipulative chief-of-state metaphohized into Neville Chamberlain, Luke becomes all chummy with his nephew that enjoys starting genocidal wars, and Mace starts running around in the jungle with a hard-on while yelling about his "humor-free zone" like some bizarre Martin Sheen/Jon Voight lovechild.

I have quite a few SW books... i got many of the NJO books in hardback for cheap, used. I swear by half.com! Check it out if you're not familiar.

I don't think the yound adult books by Kevin J. Anderson are much good as i'm not a fan of his writing style, but can't speak for the others.
Timothy Zahn is probably my favoriate sw writer; all his stuff will be worth your time if you like sw and are getting into the books.

My least favorite sw book ever was one of the prequel-era books: "Jedi Trial." Quite poorly written, IMO.

Here is a list of the books in order that I have been using to buy them - I have just started reading them and am on TPM! I cannot vouch for how good the list is, but I have been told it is comprehensive. At the front of some books I have there is a timeline that shows each book by number of years before/after the Battle of Yavin. Hope this is of some use.

My list is pretty much the same as the list at yodasdatapad.com . The 2 Republic Commando books are on their way, and i'm waiting to get Betrayal in hardback cheap. I also lack Allegiance and Darth Bane at this point in time. Additions to the list on the website above include the OT Annotated screen plays, a large, hardcover SW encyclopedia (Sansweet), "wookiee cookies," and the 3rd edition of the Guide to the Star Wars universe, edited by Slavisek. i use this book all the time and wish they'd hurry up with the 4th ed.! As far as i know, the 3rd is the most recent - anyone know otherwise?
I'd like to get some of the comic omnibuses beign released soon/recently. I don't have the patience or proper storage means for actual comic books, but (at least) some of them have good artwork and stories. Any series folsk here would reccommend?

I tend to read all the Star Wars novels (barring the young adult ones) at least once. There are a number I have read multiple times (Zahn, the X-wing series), and a few I'll never read again (Black Fleet Crisis, Jedi Trial, pretty much anything by Anderson).

What are others' most/least favorite sw books or authors? Might be helpful for those starting in on their colelctions.

My reccommendation for those just getting into the EU are what I consider the "OT" of the EU: Timothy Zahn's first (in publication year, not sw chronology) sw trilogy:
Heri to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command

Darill Cyllem

I have to say Luceno's not my favorite - he's OK. Zahn and Stover are good - i also like Denning. Allston and Stackpole both rate high with me as well. Allston's X-wing books are quite funny at times.

What is yourr favorite series besisdes the X-wing Series?

I can't remember all the books I have read. My favorite series is the NJO series though. I love the way it is written, but I think I like the I,jedi book the best.

Darill Cyllem
02-28-2007, 11:46 PM
i liked a great deal of the NJO series, but definitely some of the books were better than others. You'll get that with such a long series and multiple authors, though. I'm really enjoying LOTF thus far (thought i'm only midway through book 2). I still think Zahn's "OT of the EU" (Heir to the Empire, etc.) is one of the best series.
I didn't much care for the Jedi Academy Trilogy (or anything by Anderson, really), the Black Fleet Crisis (sah-NORE!), or Jedi Trial (Prequel era). I also remember getting bored with the Youg Jedi Knights series, about Jacen and Jaina starting their training on Yavin 4. Sure, they were "young adult" books, but they didn't have to be so poorly written - again, Anderson's work. *shakes fist*
Most of the prequel era books are pretty good, though. AOTC might be my favorite sw novel. i loved Shatterpoint and Yoda: Dark Rondezvous (hilarious!) - also up there for the favorites.

Jedi Master 2k5
02-28-2007, 11:51 PM

I'm pretty sure i posted that in the funniest EU quotes thread in the Jedi Library section, but i still love it. I think Yoda is extremely well written in that whole book.

I really wanted to like the young Jedi Knights series, as i thought the stories were interesting and Tenel Ka is one of my favorite characters from the EU. But i just... lost interest. Maybe i was too old already when i read them

Hey all of my friends say it is just wierd that I collect star wars books. I own twenty-five or more novels. Is it wierd that I collect novels? tell me what you think.

joining in late - I not only collect the books, I collect the same book with a different cover, i.e. - TPM (has Anakin/ObiWan and Darth Maul covers) and AotC (has Anakin and Padme / and Yoda)

and Star Wars books have value way beyond their covers, although they all seem like work of arts to me. I've read some of them multiple times...
It's cool to review what you've read before, esp after RotS - all those connecting stories about Dooku, Obi Wan and Anakin becoming very well acquainted and Obi Wan thinking he's sensing Qui Gon's presense and hearing his voice in his dreams; re-reading the story about Whie and how he always knew he would die at the hands of a Jedi - he's one of the Padawan's killed by Anakin in that hologram.
and of course The Moons of Iego - and reading those last few pages in RotJ where Vader/Anakin as he is dying is remembering the smell of fragrant flowers in a beautiful place......I've always said (well, since the prequels) he's remembering and returning to Naboo where Padme is waiting for him.
so - yeah - I love collecting those books....and remembering.

TPM actually had 4 different covers issued here in Australia. There was a different cover again for either the US or UK but I can't remember which one of the 2 didn't go with the 4 covers. Japan has lovely artwork on their SW books.

I love collecting the books also for the stories and the trips you can take with the images the words create.

My fav is Aaron Allston. I also love read Zahn, Anderson, Stackpole, Traviss and Denning.

My favourite 2 SW passages come from Iron Fist on the following pages

1. bottom of 277 to 282 where Wedge talks to Fel as Kettch
2. page 88 & 89 when Wedge finds Kettch the stuffed ewok in his cockpit.

The ewok in the cockpit was hillarious.

I did love the whole Lt. Kettch series of events

I have to admit Luceno isn't one of my favorite writers - i think he's a lot better than many, but just doesn't measure up to Zahn or Allston or Stackpole or a few others, IMO. I tend to lose some interest in his tales midway through. But you know, different strokes, eh?

Anyone else read Dark Lord? What did you think?

I was expecting more about Vader - there was very little in the book about what he was thinking or how he was feeling. And that would have been really interesting as he was adjusting to the immediate aftermath of ROTS.
Instead we got a lot of stuff about some Jedi we'd never heard of before - I was dissappointed there wasn't more about Vader.

I would have loved to get more of his inner monologue - I was expecting that from the title of the book "The rise of Darth Vader." For me, the book was hardly about Vader at all. The only interesting Vader stuff that stands out in my mind at the mo is how he had to adjust his lightsaber fighting style to accomodate the new prostheses. Too bad, really - it could have been quite well done and interesting. Well, i guess i can still hope something along those lines will be written and published by Del Rey.

Have you read the Republic Commando books? I have them slated to read while i wait for more LOTF book to be released. I'm only half through Betrayal, and am enjoying Travis's writing, so hope to enjoy the RC volumes.

The only one I don't own is Exile and it hasn't hit aussie bookstores yet. I've tracked down all the novels including the kids ones. I own some graphic novels but not all the SW ones. Allegiance is in the post to me from the US autographed by Zahn. I love most of my novels so I can't pick just one. I've already mentioned my favourite passage.

I know my fav non fiction book is The SW Chronicles. I also own the Prequel version signed by Steve Sansweet and Pablo Hidalgo.

The Republic Commando books are great, and I believe two more were announced. I think that some stuff from these next two will have a mention or more in the Traviss LotF books coming out.

Anyone read the Han Solo and/or Lando Calrissian adventures? Thoughts?

Han Solo Adventures weren't the best. Slow, but a few parts that I enjoyed.

Lando Calrissian Adventures . . . I've tried reading them at least three seperate times, and I haven't gotten past the rising action.

The Han Solo Trilogy is some of the most underrated EU. No one ever talks about it, and the author hasn't done anything else in Star Wars. One of the first series after the special editions came out, it includes stuff from there. About Han from when he was a teen up until he get's a job shuttling some wide - eyed kid and an old bloke with a lightsaber around the galaxy. A good read.

Love Heir to the Empire - and all the rest of Zahn's books.

Say... has anyone read that SW Galaxies book: Shadows of Dantooine or some such? Is it any good? I'm wary of it as it's based on the rpg, which i haven't heard great things about. Then again, i've heard that the Republic Commando books are good, and they're game companions as well.

Quite honestly, that's the worst Star Wars book I've read. Worse then Anderson, worse then Jedi Trial, worse then the Hambly books. The outcome, which was apparent from almost the beginning, has no effect on anything in the Star Wars universe.

Now here's my question. I picked up the Darth Bane Novel, and read like, one page. If one, such as myself, hasn't played the KotOR games *gasp* would I understand it? It didn't seem like I would, so I put it down.

As for my collection of books, I've read and own almost all of them. The ones I haven't read and don't own are the Black Fleet Crisis, and some of the Young Adult novels (both PT and OT).

I have all the hardbacks that came out after Vector Prime with the exception of:

Balance Point
Shatterpoint (I bought it in a book club, but its not the same size :banghead: )
Cestus Deception or Jedi Trial (can't remember which one; the one of those that I do have I don't have the cover for)

So I collect the novels, but I also read them. So things happen to them. A few have been scratched up by my speaker backpack, like newly released Exile. Last year, at the Rose Parade, I brought a book. Retrospectively, a bad idea, as it eventually started pouring. That messed up the second in the Dark Nest Trilogy. One day at lunch, I was reading The Rise of Darth Vader (the hardcover) and the wind blew and knocked it into my pizza. Ugh. That's the only messed up hardcover that I have.

But most are in pretty good condition. I have quite a few autographed by Allston, Travis, Zahn, Denning, and a few others. All very nice people. Allston (said, at least) that he kind of remembered me when I had him sign betrayal. I have my picutre with Karen Traviss (and maybe Allston and Denning).

For the first time (ever) I'm gonna read something besides Star Wars. I'm gonna read the Halo novels. Or try to. Then, I'm planning on re-reading the Jedi Academy Trilogy, I, Jedi, and whatever comes out next.

Some of you may have seen my journey through the EU thread (shameless plug  ). My question is, whilst I am reading all the PT novels they are relatively new and easy to obtain from a cheap online bookstore here in the UK. However, once I get to 'OT time' novels, is it likely that any of these will be hard to get hold of, as if so, I'd better start looking now, otherwise my goal to read them all in order will be stumped?!

It should be easier to get the books published a while ago used than the newer books. Most (un-used) large book stores still stock quite a variety of the books from all the time periods, regardless of publication date (in the US, anyway). www.half.com is my favorite site for used books, CDs, games, etc. I got most of my books there - but i'm also not picky about hard vs. soft cover - i'm more interested in reading them.

However, once I get to 'OT time' novels, is it likely that any of these will be hard to get hold of, as if so, I'd better start looking now, otherwise my goal to read them all in order will be stumped?!

Typically, I think you'd be able to find most books out there at your average run-of-the-mill bookstore. But, I haven't boughten any older books in quite a few years. Umm . . . If you go to a bookstore, Barnes & Noble, or Borders (or the UK equivilant) you'd be able to find, or at least back order them. It might take a few weeks, but they'll be their. Or I'm sure Amazon, or whatever other websites out their can help.

Unless you're looking for the hardcovers . . . that's harder.

I can still find most of them in normal books stores at cheap prices but not all in one store and alot of the hardcovers are now paperbacks. If not also try used stores or charity books sales.

I collect the Star Wars novels as well. I currently have all of the main novels, minus a chunk of the New Jedi Order series. I was pleased to find quite a few omnibus editions of the Corellian trilogy, Tales, the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy, the MedStar and Republic Commando duologies, the New Jedi Order trilogy, and the Dark Nest trilogy. I try to get most of my novels in hardcover and/or as an omnibus if I can. I'll try and get some pics up at if I find the time.

I've only seen 3 omnibus for novels and they were for Han Solo's and Lando's trilogy and the orginal 3 film novels, here in Australia.

We have had a few for the graphic novels / comics.

The onimbusses are always sold in book clubs, like the Science Fiction Book Club. sfbc.com. I belonged to them once, but decided to not rejoin because I'm not happy with the quality of the books I got.

You can get five with joining up, right? I got Shatterpoint, the Star Wars Trilogy Novels, and all the Guides to Characters, Vehicles, etc. And an Onimbus of the original Marvel (or whoever) comics.

The two Novels, Shatterpoint and the Trilogy, are not the same size as normal hardcovers. Their about 2 inches smaller. And some of the Guides began to fall apart; the binding.

But, if your not like me, and dont care about the stuff like the size of the book, or if the binding falls apart (That might just be coincidence), you can probably get a few great deals on their.

End rant . . . or whatever.

No, I'm like you. I love my hardcovers and they need to be perfect. I put strong rubberbands on my paperbacks so they will keep their shape during the time I read them.

I can't read a book in one sitting. When you see a new paperback it is flat but as you open it and read the cover won't stay flat. So to return the book to it's original shape I put a rubberband around it which stops the book from opening. When I finish, I leave on for another week then take it off. It then looks exactly like the book I originally bought.

Wow, most interesting. Too bad that it's too late for most of my books. I'll try that, though.

My books do looked lived in, though. The soft covers, at least.

I actually like the look of used, well-loved books... i love to have books with previous owners' names written in them, pages folks have dog-eared, notes in the margins... it's interesting to me. An artifactual history.

It also stop that terrible crease in the spine that sometimes happen in paperbacks / softcovers. The glue some books are held together with can be weak.

I've never heard of book socks or seen them sold on Australia. What are they made of? Does the book wear them while you read or only when you aren't?

Please to hear.

Hint: I use the rubberbands that are wrapped around my mail - the medium red ones they are just the right strength to hold it tight but not mark the book. This means no cost to me in buying them. Also ensure no twists in the band when wrapped around the book.

Book Sox are nylon book covers. Instead of measuring out a paper bag, or those other ones that come in the library, they stretch to fit around your books, and stay tight. Their made for text books, but they fit on my hardcovers. Their just a little loose. You can pick them up at most Office Supply stores . . . I imagine they'd be in Australia. But maybe not. Here's their website:

Thanks Sam but they aren't sold at all in any stores in Australia. We use a thing called Contact to cover our text books. It sticks onto the cover and can't be removed. It is plastic with glue on oneside. Even libraries use to to protect their paperbacks. It comes is clear, pattern even licensed products as well.

Libraries don't supply bags you need to bring your own in Australia. But as I mentioned they cover their books in either normal plastic for Hardcovers or Contact on paperbacks.

I love books so for me it's great that you like novels and collect them.
I have quite big Star Wars books collection myself, I haven't counted them but it must also be more than twenty. I started when I was still living in Poland so most of them are in polish but I'm slowly building my english collection.
I wouldn't changed them for anything - beside being a great read they are adding so much to the SW universe. :)

I've been working on my collection since about 1997. It's taken me along time to get that many books and comic, and there are about 30 graphic novels and most of the young reader books I don't have yet. I'm shooting to have everything by 30. It's hard getting the old stuff and keeping up with the new stuff too.
