Ok we all know the end of the scene at ANH, Luke fires his strangely curving proton torpedos, speeds outta there and the death star explodes
Fleeing the scene is Han in the falcon, Wedge and Lukes in thier X-wings
And one random Y-wing?
Its bugged me for years, who is that one random Y-wing?

it isnt random, its the last surviving Y-Wing from the attack and might i add its one of two that was equipped with Ion Lasers.
There was more than just two x-wings and a y-wing that got away... there just was the one's shown

I've never heard that. Where did you obtain that info?

lets see, biggs, porkins, dries, tiree, hutch, gold leader, dries two wingmen
an unamed pilot x-wing pilot get killed (after porkins x-wing blows up) are the ones you see get killed.
the red squadron are red leader (dries), red10 (dries wingman), red 7, red 3 (biggs) red 6 (porkins) red 9, red 2 (wedge), red 11, red 5(luke)
You also have gold squadron comprosed of the Y wing complement though Gold squadron seems to be only 3 Y wings all of which are killed.
The Imps count 30 rebel ships yet taking into account that wedge and luke survive that means that there are 11 fighters accounted for (9 dead 2 survivors) add the random Y-wing takes it to 12 which leaves 18 fighters that simply you dont see anything happen to, yet the fact that the thier are only three 6 X wings left for thier attack runs (dries, his wingman, luke wedge and biggs) shows that many must have been killed off that we simply didnt see. Possibly by Vaders group. But theres definetly nothing to indicate that they survive it

I agree. If they had survived, we would have seen them flying off with the others. Just because they are not killed on camera, doesn't mean that they are not killed. Like the Jedi Purge in ROTS. We only a see so many shown to be killed but we know for a fact that there are many, many more that are indeed killed.

and that the jedi purge continues for a few years after the events in ROTS

Presumably but, still, there are many more Jedi killed as a result of Order 66 than is shown in the movie. That said it stands to reason that there were other wings destroyed during the Battle of Yavin than were shown onscreen. Just like there were many more Rebels and Imperials killed than were shown onscreen during the Battle of Endor both in space and on the ground.

Maybe they were killed on camera and you just don't realize it ... that is, maybe they were still by the DEATH STAR when it blew up (they couldn't pull up in time) and they ended up being little sparkly things, like the rest of the DS.

Maybe they landed on the Death Star and were attempting to destroy it from within ala the space missions on Battlefront II? Or perhaps they ditched the mission and lightsped it off to Tattooine to get in a quick bet at Watto's Gambling House? Or, and this is the most likely, they had to go back to Yavin IV because they forgot to set their Beta to record MASH?
There are many 'other' options as well...............

going into the EU universe and the X wing series, Wedge is the only pilot to go against both death stars however with roughly six years in between the two death stars destruction it is feasible that the others all died before endor

Six years? Isn't ESB around 2-3 years after ANH and ROTJ is around 6 months to a year after ESB? That would make it a total of 3-4 years between destructions.

from what i remember its just over 4 years from ANH and ESB and Han is in carbonite for the better part of a year before they get him out

I don't think that 4 years between ANH and ESB is entirely accurate. If I really cared that much I would check but, since I don't, does anyone know for certain?

*grabs new jedi order book which has a time line in it.....................*
its three years between ANH and ESB and another year between ESB and ROTJ so your earlier estiamte was correct dbldwn

interesting article indeed adn though wiki can never be a hundred percent relaible its certainly a good read.
I always thought the A-wing was developed after Yavin by jan dodonna to combat the interceptor (which was designed to combat the X-wing) but reading that shows up where the A-wing and spearhead are different ships which is where that misconception comes from
