I don't know about the rest of you, but I collect avatars. I don't actually create very many, but I do keep them all in an avatar file. So here they are, in as close to chronological order as I can recall.

Yeah, this was my 'meat hat' avatar from a while back. I don't why this image spoke to me as much as it did. Plus, I'm not even a 'hat person'. Ever notice how some people just look good in hats? I'm not one of those people. My head is so large and oddly shaped that most hats just don't look good on me. And yet, this guy can wear a hat made from strips of filet mignon and carry it off with a weird elan.

The profile title possibilities for a man wearing a hat made from meat are almost endless; 'The Ladies Love My Meat ... Hat.' and so on.

This avatar is a salute to Kool-Aid drinking liberals everywhere. And who can resist screaming, "OH YEAH!!!" every once in a while?

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/5b.jpg

Yeah, the meat hat thing works as a normal hat, but probably not as a yarmulke. (Did I spell that right?) Anyway, I'll post more tonight, I have a larger collection at home.

Ok, one last one!
Go Scanners.

I remember why. It was at that time that one former member, I think it was bodhisattvah yoda, a crusading vegetarian and anti-meat eater, was posting endlessly about why we should not enjoy meat and not consume it. If I'm not mistaken, I think your meat hat was in response to his crusade.

Personally, it just led to me thinking of you as Meathead.

I look forward to seeing the ... was it a prairie dog? It was the first avatar I remember you having when I joined the GS.

Yes, you're right Tov! I completely forgot about that. I also recently used the following 'hat-related' avatar in response to the 9/11 thread being overrun by conspiracy theorists:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/tinfoilavat.jpg

I got Master Cephus to also don a tinfoil hat, and our 'Tinfoil Hat Brigade' lasted about two posts before I was asked by a Mod to stop tormenting the already tormented conspiracy theorist senators with my avatar. So I removed it.

Ok, here's another one from my archive:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/capav4.gif

"American Hegemony, Go!"

I love being a jingoistic American exceptionalist. (Thanks again to Marbleman for pointing that out.) I think it's great that America has an empire now. It just seems strange to me that being proud of being an American is considered passe. I still believe (despite the new reality show featuring Latoya Jackson as a police officer) that America is the greatest nation that humanity has yet produced. We've done more good for more people than any other nation, and I'm proud of that fact. I'm not saying other nations are crap...

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/capav3.jpg

... but there are my shorts. Which leads me to discuss my past dalliances with Europe, and France in particular:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/DrSmithAvat.gif

Ok, notice the poorly edited flap of background under Dr. Smith's ear. I chose this avatar because I've always considered Europe (and France in particular) to be the 'Dr. Smith' of the human race. For the Philistines among us who have never watched or heard of the TV show 'Lost in Space' the show is about the Robinson Family, whose spacecraft has become (surprise!) lost in the depths of space. Dr. Smith is a stowaway on board who is not actually a member of the beleagured family, and acts as the show's protagonist. On nearly every episode Dr. Smith makes a deal with whatever bug-eyed, multi-tentacled alien is hoping to eat the Robinson family. In the deal Smith is promised either control of the ship, gold, or the promise to be eaten last. Invariably, the Robinson's discover the plot, defeat the alien, and Dr. Smith is horribly, dreadfully sorry about the whole misunderstanding and that he had no idea that the alien was actually going to eat the Robinson's, etc., etc.

I feel the character of Dr. Smith perfectly embodies the nature of most of Europe -- estranged from the West, arrogant, cowardly, sometimes traitorous, unable and/or unwilling to act, and always hoping to 'cut a deal' or talk their way out of becoming provender for some hideous monster or tyrant. Even after getting the Robinson's deeper into trouble and threatening them all by giving the hungry alien either time or information, Dr. Smith (like Europe) finds himself in deep trouble and the Robinson's (like the rest of humanity) save his bacon again. And they let him back onto the ship, giving him yet another chance to parlay with the next monster, on next week's show. Like Dr. Smith, Europe is an anchor on the rest of humanity's ankle when the water starts to rise. Consider their treatment of Hitler and now Iran's President Ahmadamadajinestad (did I spell that right?). They're still hoping to talk their way past a monster. Or become friends with the monster in order to either profit or be eaten last. It did not work the last time, and it will not work this time.

On the other hand, France makes excellent cheeses and breads. Or so I'm told.

My lamest avatar ever. Actually... no, not quite. There was a time when my avatar upset someone so badly I was asked to change it. I think it might have been the exploding Scanners image. It was making people physically ill. Although the captioning potential for that avatar is great, it can be a bit much. So I once changed my avatar to this:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/bunny.jpg

Unable to find just the right cupcake or gumdrop avatar, I settled on Thumper, who would never hurt anyone, not even a trapper. You never hear the bullet with your name on it, though. Thumper wasn't my only cartoon avatar -- I've had a lot of avatars based on the great comic strip ever inked -- Bloom County by Berke Breathed. It was a very political comic strip that poked fun at politicians, celebrities, Apple computers. Anyone or anything that got into the headlines could get into the strip. It was like Doonesbury, but not nearly as achingly unfunny. So here are some of my BC avatars, cropped out of my collection:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/miloavat.gifI'm a writer at heart, so this editor-like shot of the character Milo appealed to me. Breathed often poked fun at journalists, which they richly deserve.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/opus2_leftzbcz.gifOpus the penguin. Why does a penguin appeal to me? I don't know. Why should you care? They're odd birds is all; big bottomed, unable to fly. Opus was either running for political office, trying to 'get it on' with 'small-nosed sorority girls' or having his nose liposuctioned. This is the avatar I'd run to when I felt chastened, or wondered what it would be like to experience the emotion.

I still don't own a Bill the Cat plush toy. But I always liked Bill because he was so odd, and I like odd images. A cat with a chainsaw, tophat and shiny spats works. Contuing in the genre of weird images, here are some weird avatars that just caught my fancy:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/hair.gif

I'm not going bald, my hair isn't even thinning. It's just a genetic gift of mine. There's just something about an add that show's hair coming from your back, or the nape of your neck that is unsettling to me.

This was an avatar I selected for Javen a while back. This fellow was just, I dunno, special? He's clearly a captain of a vessel, responsible for the lives of other men, possibly some animals. He also looks soused, but still capable of sailing that ship. I think my original caption for this avatar was: 'Got a little Captain in you?' from the 'Captain Morgan' liquor commercials. I think this guy, he's jaunty.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/0715screamingbrain-autosized141.jpg

An image from Bruce Campbell's Sci-Fi television made-for-TV movie, 'The Man With The Screaming Brain' in which Bruce Campbell's high-society character travels to Latvia or some other European-y place and is promptly murdered. Half his brain is replaced by half of the brain from a Latvian cab-driver and he is reanimated. My original profile caption was, "I WILL TRIUMPH OVER MY HEAD INJURY!' or something like that. Again, a head-injury avatar.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/ogg074.jpghttp://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/mayormc.jpg

I forget who the guy on the far left is, he was from some Sid & Marty Kroft production, which are always creepy. J.R. Pufinstuf? In any case, he and Mayor McCheese are nightmare fuel.

My word, it has been a pleasure indeed Krog to have wandered down your particular memory lane.
I liked the one you picked for Javen, I remember it well. The captain did look a tad...special.

Thanks Flo.

I'm going to be including ideas for future avatars, as well as avatars stymied by the GS's paltry 20k file size limit. I recently saw a crappy old film called 'Village of the Giants' in which some incredibly stupid 60's teenagers eat some weird goop that makes them 50 feet tall. They were rebellious youths, prone to spontaneous awkward dancing before they ate the super goop, and once they're 50-feet tall they take over a small mid-western American town and have things 'their way'. They still dance a lot, however.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, there's a scene from the movie that I thought would make a great avatar, but I haven't gotten around to making it yet. A brave, normal-sized teenager attempts to stop the giganto-sized teens, but only manages to get his hands hooked around one of the giant female's enormous bra cups. As the giantess rears up to her full height and begins to shimmy, the poor lad hangs on for dear life, his feet dangling high over th pavement.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r277/Krogenar/villageofthegiants.jpg

Be careful what you wish for.

This image doesn't even really do the scene justice. The makers of the film actually built a scaled model of the dancer's upper torso, attached the actor to it, and then make the huge prop buck like a mechanical bull. I gotta figure out how to make that scene from the film into an avatar! Anyway, this is just one example of the weird crap I think makes for a good avatar.
