View Full Version : How would you have made the Fight at Bespin better/more realistic?

If you had to change the fight between Vader and Luke on Bespin, what would you change? Persoanlly I'd have Luke use grenades at first, rather an try and fight Vader Jedi Style. I would make Luke seem more dangerous and Vader cooler for dodging them.

I enjoy the scene as it is. Luke chucking gernades would be out of character besides disrupting the samurai/knight mojo the Jedi have.

Not really regarding the fight itself, but I'd have the people at ILM reconstruct parts of the duel's environment to make it more expansive, crisper, and modern. Ironically, I got this idea after playing the ESB duel level of Lego Star Wars: II wherein the entire battleground for the father/son duel is MUCH bigger than what we see on film and looks a bit more "prequel-ish" (people spitting on the idea of making the OT look like the PT cannot deny the fact that parts of Cloud City's interiors do indeed resemble the corridors of Tipoca City on Kamino). I wouldn't even really call for a total overhaul of the duel's environment, but more or less a CG enhancement to open things up a bit here and there.
Also, I'd like to hear, just as an experiment, some additional music added throughout the duel. Nothing loud and bombastic like DotF or BotH, but rather something dark, moody, and subtle a la' the music during the sequence in which Qui-Gon and Darth Maul are waiting for the laser gates to open in TPM. Loud percussive drums to increase the anxiety and tension in the scene. However, I also realize that NO music at all can be just as nerve-tingling and intense as moody music, so I'm perfectly fine as it is. With this line of thought, I'd like to mention that I downloaded a video that experimented with the soundtrack during the duel and replaced the dramatic, revelatory "Imperial March" just after the "I am your father" line with the music from "Anakin's Dark Deeds" played during the pre-Mustafar scene between Obi-Wan and Padme on Coruscant ("Anakin's the father, isn't he?"). As accustomed as I am to the IM used here, the new music created an entirely different emotion, especially after watching the films in chronological order; thusly, of course, the "revelation" isn't really even a revelation at all, if not to the character of Luke alone. The new music hearkens back to a younger Anakin and thoughts of the pregnancy/birth of Luke in ROTS and helps to invoke images of the man behind the iron shell, creating a definite bridge between this pivotal scene and the PT. The link for the video is long dead now, but it is definitely worth looking into if you can find it online somewhere else sometime.
Lastly, of course, I'd have them clean up the saber blades as best as possible. PLEASE get rid of Vader's blurry pink saber. It's so damn inconsistent and only becomes half-way decent during the gantry sequence. During the rest of the duel, both combatants' blades lack a defined "white core" that makes the sabers so identifiable to all. Also, in a few shots in particular (including the shot where Vader has Luke at swordpoint lying on his back) the sabers look a bit to thin and rod-like. Maybe the ILM guys could beef them up a bit for consistency.

Wow. Of all of the scenes, in all of the films, this is one that is as perfect as they come and needs no alterations. Have you ever noticed that of the OT, that ESB has the least amount of "tweaks" for it's special edition? There's a reason for that. The movie is perfect, no need to mess with it any further, let alone that sequence.

It had always bothered me, even after this was somewhat remedied in the SE, that after Lando got on the public address system and warned the people to flee, that you only see a few people running through the halls, and only for a short scene at that. There should have been huge numbers of people racing through the halls panicking, inadvertantly getting between the stormtroopers and the fleeing rebels. And there should have been hundreds (or more) of ships taking off and fleeing the city and the planet.
Aside from that, everything was perfect in the fighting and the duel. Except for when Luke was sucked out through the broken window. His body visibly obviously flew out much further beyond the window, than implied by when Vader looks out and sees him hanging on at the edge of the walkway, only a few feet away from the wall below the window. When he was sucked out, his body seemed to go out too far to have then fallen straight down and back, to land on the edge. I would have redone that falling/flying out of the window.
There is only 2 other clips from the duel that bothered me. In one, when Luke swung his saber at the objects being thrown at him, his saber appears to go right through the center of an object, but yet the object was not sliced in half. There was damage to it, but not enough from a lightsaber slicing through it.
The 2nd one that urked me, though it is minor and not enough to affect the rest of the movie, was then Luke and Vader exitted that tunnel and were slashing away at each other, both their saber blades hit the wall and caused sparks, but there should have been more damage, including the blades slicing through the wall.

You nit-picker!
As far as Luke's fall from the window, how about this? We already see that he's strong enough in the Force to propel his self out of the freezing chamber. Later, we see him control his fall from the platform into that tunnel type thing. What's to say that he didn't try and steer himself onto the platform and simply missed a bit? HA! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
As for the rest of your 'complaints', well, I got nothing.

It's a facecious question, asked strictly for fun. I aksed in that spirti, I loved the scene, though I think it could have used reinforcement that Luke wasn't yet a Jedi. I just thought grenades would be cool. And logical. If I were gonna fight Vader half trained, I'd go with heavy guns and grenades. But hey, that's me. So have fun. :nahnah:

Heh, heh...I was actually calling Tovor a 'nit-picker', because, well...I like to bust his balls whenever possible.
As to your point, well sure, heavy weaponry may be the way to go.

I believe the Bespin swordfight to be the best in the entire series.

The only scene that they added was the Jabba the Hutt scene in ANH at the Millenium Falcon.

^Eh? We're talking about ESB, and besides, there are many added scenes/tweaks throughout the entire OT SE's.

I would make them fight faster. They were moving way to slow.
