View Full Version : R2's super powers

I haven't seen any complaints about R2's newly discovered rocket ports (aparently coupled with repulsor lifts based on the ease of his floating through the droid factory). I supposed you could explain the absence of this feature in the original films by saying that they've become old, rusted, and unuseable by that time, but it sure did feel like a cheat when I was watching CLONES.
And how about beeping to 3PO, "move out of the way" instead of knocking him off the ledge? Would that be so difficult?

Yeah I was kinda wondering myself why R2 knocked down 3P0. It seemed like he was trying to kill him. If you look close enough you can see murder in his eye lense. As for your idea on R2's rockets I believe I read somewhere that they have a 20 year life span, and afterwords need to be replaced so perhaps they both never got replaced. I really can't remember were I read it though I'm sorry.

When ESB first came out I thought it was dumb that R2 suddenly had all these extra little arms and parts that come out, but then I realized that nowhere in the first movie does it say he doesn't have a few extra tools hidden away somewhere. So maybe we don't see them in Episodes 4 - 6 because he didn't find himself in a position to use them.
The 20-year warranty idea is ok, and I guess is from an "official" source, but sounds more like an excuse. I'd just say he uses them only when he absolutely has to.

Speaking of R2, who built him? It seems there is some other Force at work to make him so subborn, tough, and intellegent. Some sort of Jedi construct we may not be openly aware of?

I suspect R2 was developed by the Swiss Army Robotics Company. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
As an FYI, there was a scene in TPM where R2 used his rockets, but it was cut from the final version of the film. However, the R2 action figure from TPM, included them.

Now apparently there is already an excuse out there for no rockets in the OT, but Nelson, there as an opportunity in the ESB. Right after Luke and R2 crash in the swamp on Dagobah, R2 certainly could've used those rockets to avoid falling into the swamp and getting spat out by whatever beast was down there, don't you think? :sly:

Maybe... unless they don't work underwater... ;)

THEY AREN'T ROCKET THEY'RE ANTI-GRAV BOOSTERS!!!
R2 had no need for them in OT.

Nelson- I meant before he falls into the water. I think he would have a need for them there, Droid.

That's true, but then his fall happens so fast that maybe he didn't have time to fire them up. R2 has lots of little tools and capabilities that he doesn't use all the time.

He may have been constructed on Naboo. *We first saw R2 repairing that Naboo ship.

I don't think the Jedi had anything to do with the construction of R2. I think he was simply constructed to help Naboo and the whole thing with him getting involved with the Jedi is one huge coincidence.
However, is a necessary coincidence because R2 is very vital to the whole saga and is quite an entertaining character.

R2 pushing 3po. That is a mirror move from ROTJ , where R2 pushes 3PO from Jabba`s sailing barge. The ANTI-GRAV BOOSTERS(ok Rebel?) warranty had gone out in OT, and no one remebered to order new ones. How often does he have to use them?
R2 was constructed at Naboo. He is an astromec droid, made for repairing ships ++++++.

I was wondering why noone had brought this up before obidobi because you are right on R2 pushing 3po it is a mirror move from ROTJ.

Sure, I remember that but at least it seemed to serve an actual purpose in ROTJ. In AOTC, it's only purpose seems to be for comedic reasons. That, or maybe R2 simply didn't like 3PO and did it with malicious intent. Serioulsy, think about it.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it didn't really happen all that fast. In fact you clearly see R2 fidgeting as if he's nervous several seconds before the fall. It only takes a couple of seconds to fire those bad boys up, right?
Ok, time to devote my mind to more important matters. :whatsthat:

R2's crazy! That was funny when he pushed 3PO then he gets then he just simply takes out his boosters and flies smart little droid!

R2 simply pushed 3-PO out of the way because he didn't have time to waste while waiting for 3-PO to slowly scoot over. If he wouldn't have got to the control pannel in time, Padme would have been molten metal very quickly. So as you can see, it is better to waste a droids life, than a human one. Padme's life at that. Plus, R2 has always had a little stubborn streak at pushing and shoving folks. He even bumped Jar Jar out of the way, and didn't even know him. The little turd. But again, if he wouldn't have, the Saga would have ended before it even completely began. :look:

Senator Amory- That is the best explanation I have heard thus far for R2 pushing 3PO off the ledge. Well done.

Yeah..
3po was in his way, discussing and arguing about something silly as usual. He would not have moved, because he is a stubborn pice of metallic junk, so R2 had only one option: To push him away.

My first post in a couple of weeks coming back from our vacation in Mexico . . .
I think that the question of why R2 pushed 3P0 over the ledge in AOTC is solved by Sen Amory. R2 didnt even know 3P0 that good and he wasnt about to ask 3P0 to move aside politely watchin his master about to die.
I enjoyed watchin R2 flash some more of his gadgets. I hope there are many more in the future episode. R2 could only use them whenever is so pleases him.

Having just seen AOTC again yesterday, I thought it was pretty obvious that 3PO was in the way. He and R2 haven't had years of experience together yet and R2 is at this point programmed to serve Padme. So, R2 was just doing his duty.

It did say on HOLONET.com that r2's rockets had a 20 year warrenty, thus the official explanation is that they had expired.
