This is for discussion on the Emperor's Royal Guards.
Who are they?
Where do they come from?
How do they train?
How are they chosen?
Direct refrences to Crimson Empire are welcome! As are ideas and theroies.

Originally, the Galactic Senate had its Senate Guards, but when Darth Sidious ascended to Senator from Chommell Sector, he manipulated a friendship with Master Jedi Ronhar Kim, then staged an assassination attempt on himself by Force compelling Senate Guards to attack him shortly after he became Chancellor. All this was in the prescence of Kim, who defended the Chancellor from the Senate Guards, who killed themselves before they could talk. Ronhar Kim helped the new Chancellor create the Red Guards, the personal bodyguards to the Supreme Chancellor in response to this incident, and the Red Guards answered only to Palpatine and no other. They defended Palpatine during his kidnapping by Grievous, and later went with him to Mustafar to rescue Lord Vader. Nobody but Palpatine and possibly Vader and Sate Pestage ever knew just how many of them there were, and even during the Clone Wars the Jedi had no idea of thier exact number. In fact, during the hunt for Darth Sidious, Mace Windu suspected that Sidious was hiding amongst the Red Guards, among other possibilities. When Sidious became Emperor, the Red Guards became the Imperial Royal Guard, and were under the direct control of Palpatine himself. The Emperor was never seen without at least one nearby. In addition to serving Palpatine, some Royal Guards were assigned to protect important Imperials and projects, as some were seen in the ROTJ novelization protecting Moff Jejerrod. Royal Guards were regularly rotated in and out of the Stormtrooper Corps so as to stay fighting fit. All Royal Guards were trained at a secret academy on Yinchorr in the Outer Rim. Stormtroopers who met certain requirements of skill, size, and merit were given Royal Guard training on Yinchorr under the strict tutelage of Master Trainer Ved Kennede. The most elite Royal Guards were made Sovereign Protectors, and served on Byss. Force sensitive Guards could eventually rise to Dark Side Adept and from there to Dark Jedi. Royal Guards had thier own specialty TIE Interceptors that were equipped with shields and a hyperdrive. After Endor, where many Guards perished on the Death Star 2, surviving Guards either fled to Byss, or stayed loyal to Sate Pestage. Ysanne Isard later used leftover Royal Guards and even sent some to Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya, among those being Carnor Jax, who Lumiya took as an apprentice. Grand Admiral Thrawn had at least one Royal Guard, Grodin Tierce, serving a rotation on Chimeara's Stormtrooper detachement, and created a clone of him that would later team up with Moff Disra of Braxant Sector in an attempt to overthrow Gilad Pelleaon. During the resurrected Emperors campaign in 11 ABY, surviving Royal Guards served on Byss, and on Palpatines Eclipse class vessels. The surving guards who were not killed with the destructions of Byss and the Eclipse vessels gathered on Yinchorr to mourn the loss of Palpatine. Somedays into the mourning, a lone Royal Guard burtst in with unfathomable news. Carnor Jax had teamed up with the Emperors traitoruous physician and certain members of the Imperial Ruling Council in a sucessful attempt to destroy Palpatines clones. When the last clone perished on Onderon, The guard had been one of those with the Emperor, but the Jedi had left him for dead. However, he escaped to Yinchorr just in time, for as the Guards realized that Jax was not present among the mourners, Jax's stormtroopers burst in in waves and slaughtered Ved Kennede and all the Royal Guards save one: Kir Kanos. Kanos escaped the slaughter, eventually killing Jax and the other responsible for Palpatines demise. Though rightly regarded as the last true Royal Guard, Kanos was not the only Guard living as of the Vong War. Stragglers, one defector, and at least one clone also still existed as of the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion. Kanos' ultimate fate has yet to be revealed, but I hope hes will be seen in a SW story again. Massacrus here. Are you, Cydon, by any chance interested in Sith History? Or in the Imperial Dignitaries? Because I know a LOT about them. I also have some threads posted about them, if it interests you! Massacrus out.

Are the Royal Guads themselves force sensitive?
Cydon

Not really. If they were, they would be most likely trained like Jerec and become Dark Jedi.

some were, and in fact, most may have been at least minorly Force Sensitive. Those that definitely were, trained to be Sovereign Protectors, and the ones that excelled from there trained as Dark Jedi

Was Executioner Sedriss a Sovereign Protector.

Why can't you find happy former guardsmen? Like one who left after Palpy really died and wrote books about it? Go on tour, get some chicks? Always serious and brooding Palpy's minions are, yes! :yoda:

well, Kanos IS still out there, hell, he might even be Darth Krayt....
and no, Sedriss was never a Soveriegn Protector. He was a mercenary recruited by Imperial Intelligence who murdered a bunch of Imperial Operatives, was slated for execution, but was given to the Inquisitorious after being found to be Force Sensitive, from which point he became a Dark Jedi....
