I know r2-d2 was not owens first choice, but what did he need that kind of droid for? Wasn't R2 an astro mech droid or something like that.

R2's basically a mechanic and, on a moisture farm with lots of parts for enhanced production, a mechanic would be quite handy.

Seems like he would need a mechanic alot more than a protocol droid (other than Aunt Beru's apparent need to have someone speak Bocce).

Besides specially designed droids for moisture farm use, I can't think of anymore usefull droids besides one that can talk to your computers and find out what is wrong with them, and a good mechanic droid that can fix just about anything.

Possibly true. But Tatooine isn't an environment that requires a specialist in "etiquette and protocol." Even the tone of Mr. Lars' "etiquette and protocol" question seemed to reflect that attitude.

Droids as seen by most people are things that work to help at various jobs. True R2 is an astromech droid and very handy in space but he also has functions that are the qualities of a mechanic. As for 3PO he is programmed for etiquette, a protocol droid fluent in over 6 million forms of communication. A valuable commodity indeed especially if you deal in trade with non human species.

Does a astromech droids specialised in these? I thought they were only useful when stationed at spaceships?

The wonderful thing about droids is that they are a utility that can be utilized in almost any situation you put them/need them in. with a few adjustments of programs and maybe additional tools they can work on starships, vehicles, computer mainframes, moisture vaperators and any number of other things. basicly an galactic Jack of all trades is the potential here. > :artoo: beautiful, is it not?
