Discussion Thread - Survivor: Dagobah

Okay, here's the situation... I am starting a thread called "Survivor: Dagobah". It will be the Star Wars version of Survivor. Here are the basics:

What is it?
Twelve players, two teams... will be stranded on Dagobah.
Each week, the thread will be discussion, role-playing, and fun. Each Friday, there will be a contest of some kind... most likely trivia to determine which team (or later individual) will gain immunity. Then the players AND the people who are just following it, will vote Saturday and Sunday to determine who gets voted off by Monday.

You are to be Galactic Senate self, not a character from the movies (we have changed this rule)

How to get involved:
Post that you want to be involved in this thread.
The first twelve posters will be chosen to be on the planet.

I will randomly assign each player to a team. The Reek Tribe and The Aiwha Tribe. You will not be able to choose your teammates, but secret coalitions are allowed and encouraged. You will work with that team until there are only six left, and the teams will be combined into one.

I will be the moderator and host of the show and will explain more rules as we go. I will be asking at least one GS moderator to help advise so that it is run fairly. But keep in mind... it's all in fun!!!

Okay, we have 10 so far... I will leave it open until this evening, or until we get 12 whichever comes first... the next two people will close it out.

If we get to this evening with only 10, we'll roll with 10, because that's a decent amount.

Once we have the players, I will then randomly assign teams... there is no guarantee which team you will be on to make it fair and fun.

Then I will open the Survivor: Dagobah game thread and write the opening, where you are dropped on the planet, divided up, given the rules, and then it's just fun on from there. It might be a good idea to vote among your teams either in the thread or via PM on who will be your team's captain for the first week. The team captain will be the one responsible for turning in your answers for the immunity challenge. If the captain ends up getting voted off, you will have to vote on a new one.

You will have through this weekend to get to know each other on your teams, talk about whatever in the thread... and then on Monday, each team will be challenged with a set of questions ranging from Star Wars trivia, current events, and Galactic Senate trivia (a scavenger hunt to see who can find answers to questions about things or members based on posts somewhere within the Senate message boards).

The process is meant to be fun and entertaining both for those involved and those "watching" the show. Again, there may be alliances (men vs. women, mods vs. members or vice versa...) they are allowed, even encouraged to make it fun. If you feel you were the victim of an alliance, DO NOT GET MAD! That's part of the fun! If you are the first voted off, don't get mad, get even... because you will then be involved in future immunity challenges and get a chance to get sweet revenge on those who booted you off!

Each Monday, the challenges will be set. You will have until 10:00 pm EST every Thursday to complete them. The team who completes them first with the most amount of right answers gains immunity for that week. I will then open a poll in the survey forum where EVERYONE can vote to remove one player from the planet. Each person up for voting off will be encouraged to post pleading their case in that thread. The voting will be encouraged to be silent (meaning, you shouldn't post who you voted for, let em sweat!)

Ever watch Survivor and wish you had a vote? Now you do! And if you're playing, you want to not only win the hearts of your team... but also the hearts of the "viewers"! Perhaps the most entertaining poster gets to stay... perhaps the most obnoxious one has to go? Who knows. It's all in fun!

Arguing and debating are very much allowed and encouraged among the teams or team members, but all regular board rules apply... keep it civil. Remember, we are having fun.

The idea is to have fun, get to know one another, enrich your knowledge of Star Wars and this board, and did I mention... have fun?

Yes, I have a number assigned randomly to each player right now between 1 and 10... it is not in the order they signed up... it is completely random... I will then be sending that list of names and their numbers to an impartial party (I was thinking of asking OBG since he ducked out and is a mod... OBG?) Then I was going to have X-3P0 who doesn't know the numbers and names and is our resident protocol droid to randomly put groups of numbers together...(ie: 56290 and 13478) The impartial party (OBG perhaps?) could then tell us which numbers apply to which players and we have our teams.

Since it's late, and we're stuck at 10... I have a feeling that this is it. I will be getting the teams assigned ASAP and get back to you this evening.

If two more join in, they will be assigned to one of the two teams in some other random fashion. But 10 is enough to make it fun.

Once the teams are decided upon, I will open the game up and give you a queue to begin...

Each week, in addition to the immunity challenge, each player will be asked to post their opinions on a topic of discussion... like "Is the PT better than the OT?". Your answers and the discussion it sparks will help fellow team mates and "viewers" decide who to vote on at the end of the week. Kind of a get to know you ice breaker each week... fun stuff... not political debates style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif...

Anyway, I will be contacting OBG and X-3P0 to get things started soon...

I have decided that I will be opening the voting each weekend up in the Polls area, but each of the teammates voting will have to PM me with their votes when the time comes. The PM votes are what actually sends people off the planet. The public poll is for tie breakers... the viewers decide then. Plus it's there for fun so that everyone can get involved.

And in the end... when there are but two... the public will vote in the winner.

Like I have said... the questions begin Monday. This is just the time to introduce the teams, get yourselves set. Each week, a discussion topic will be put out, there are no immunities at stake, but you will need to sound off about the topic, debate it if you feel the need, in order to make yourself heard. It will be used by others to help determine who they want to vote or not vote against. I will drop one of these discussion starters in the mix tomorrow. Everyone will be expected to sound off about it as they see fit.

But the immunity challenges won't begin until Monday... this way everyone is familiar a bit with their teammates... and we will have a standard time period for the questions to be turned in for judging.

When immunity challenges roll around, the participation or contribution to the answers may be what the team decides gets you voted off... but if it's close, perhaps their disagreement with you in a certain area will be your downfall... who knows how it will play out?

Okay, the first immunity challenge will begin tomorrow. X-3P0... PM me with approximate times tomorrow that I may AIM you and coordinate what we're gonna do. The questions should go live by about 9:00 pm EST. All the instructions for submitting answers will be included in a post by me on the main page, along with the questions.

Each player will send in as many of the answers as they possibly know to me via email as soon as they know them. The first team to get all the answers correct and in to my email OR the team with the most correct answers as of Thursday 10:00 EST will win immunity.

After that challenge is over, I will announce which team will need to vote, as well as the results of the answers, including who guessed what... this will help you make your choice about who to vote off... it will tell you who is most likely to help keep you afloat and who is destined to sink your team.

Again, tomorrow at approximately 9:00pm EST or later, the challenge will begin. So be prepared.

There will be ten questions and the questions will be SW Trivia, GS Trivia, and GS board scavenger hunt type questions.

Here's the lowdown:

Each team member answers as many as they can... there are only 10 answers... the first team with all ten in to me... in any form (2 from one player 4 from another and 4 from another, or all 10 from one) wins immunity. This is the fairest way I could do it with a time limit.

So the strategy is for each player to just answer as many as they can in one email to me. If that's only 5, great, hopefully your teammates will back you up on the rest.

In the end, you will know who contributed the most or least towards your try... This is the fairest way to do it, based on time rather than total answers... techincally if everyones were added up, your team could just PM each other's answers to each other and both teams would get all points.... then how would we decide? This way, there is a time limit, and everyone has a chance to participate in some way... it will be who can participate with the most correct and the fastest that will win.

Does that make sense?

Caveat:

Make sure you are ready before you email answers... ONLY the first email from any individual player will be considered an entry for the challenge... so if you only have four and you want to wait until you answer all ten or six or whatever... do NOT email until you are done answering... the first email is the only answers accepted. If you email six answers and find a seventh later, it will be too late... HOWEVER, you will be free to send it to someone who hasn't emailed yet to put on their list... got it?

Okay, the challenge begins tonight, as I've said before. I'm still trying to coordinate with X-3P0 and I actually just found out I may have to stay at work a little later than 9 now, so they may be a little late. Regardless, I want to post the immunity challenge rules and regs now for all to read and understand:

<span style="font-size:24pt;line-height:100%"><span style="color:darkblue">IMMUNITY CHALLENGE RULES</span></span> 1. Each player should attempt to answer as many of the ten questions as possible.


2. All answers from an individual player must come in the form of ONE email. If you can only answer four or five, send those, but that ONE email is your only submission. Subsequent emails from the same individual player with more or corrected answers will be dismissed. If you know an answer after you've already submitted, it is a good strategy to contact someone on your team who has NOT submitted yet and give it to them.


3. Once the challenge is posted, it is open for answering. Answers should be sent via email to: <span style="color:blue">gs_survivor@yahoo.com</span>

4. The correct answers for each team will be tallied as the emails come in. Periodically during the challenge days, I will update with progress or when the challenge is completed.


5. The first team to ten right answers (from any member of that team or combination of members) will win the challenge. Or, the team with the most right answers after time has expired on Thursday at 10pm EST will win the challenge, whichever comes first.


6. Scavenger hunt questions that ask for information in a thread of the Galactic Senate will only have valid answers that are in threads prior to the publication of the questions. For example.. if the question asks Who thinks "Palmer's wife is Evil!" in Com Chatter... you cannot go and post it yourself or have someone else post it, and then answer you or them. The answers to scavenger hunt questions are already in the past threads somewhere. (It is also not fair, though I know none of you would do it, but it begs to be said, for a mod to edit anything involved in a questioned thread to the benefit of either team.)


7. Have fun. When the challenge is over, I will reveal who answered how many and the order received. You should then be thinking who you want to vote off.

2. The losing team players will send their votes (player's name) as well as a brief "confessional" as to why via email. The "confessionals" will be revealed after voting, but the people who said them will not be revealed until the end of the game and we have a winner.


3. I will also throw in a poll in the Polls area for everyone else to vote. You may vote in this as well. It's mostly for fun, but in the event of a tie in private voting, the public poll will decide who goes and who stays. Should that result in a tie as well, we'll play it by ear LOL.


4. Once someone has been voted off and announced Sunday night of each week. That person will be asked to leave the planet, and will no longer be allowed to post in the game thread. They are still welcome and encouraged to post in the discussion thread though.


5. Again, have fun!

Well, hopefully you'll be able to tonight, and can get answers in, or hope that your teammates get enough in... I mean, that's why it's a team effort right now... if you make it to the later rounds when it's every person for themselves, it'll be more difficult. But the great thing about a team, is they back each other up (hopefully, unless they've formed an alliance behind your back LOL)

Anyway, the questions will be up tonight. If you can't get em, then you'll have to rely on your teammates to answer...

remember, not EVERY player has to answer, particularly if one player kicks butt and gets them all right away. But your contribution will either help or hinder your team. That's the situation...

If you know five answers... send them.
If someone else knows seven answers, they send them.
If someone else knows all ten, they send them.

In the end, between everyone on your team, you will have all ten answers (hopefully)... the challenge is in which team gets all ten first. You may send in some of the same answers as someone else... that's okay... two of you may send in all ten, that's okay too... again, the challenge lies in which team has members who get all ten before the other team.

It is both an individual AND a team effort... kind of like gymnastics... you go out and perform your best for the team. You'll get a score for your individual contribution, but hopefully combined with the contribution of the rest of your team, will be enough to beat the competition. Only in this, instead of a cumulative score, it is the first team to reach the goal of ten points. So in a sense, your strategy should be to answer as many as you possibly can and hope for the best from the rest of your team. In the end, the team only needs 10 points first... all ten right first.

I decided on email versus PM because even though I delete every so often, my PM mailbox memory tends to get full quickly. Not sure why. Rather than take the chance, I chose email. I also changed my email button at the bottom of my posts to the gs_survivor email. So at the bottom of the question post, you can just click "Email" and submit answers. I also thought for the sake of those who might accuse the mods of an unfair advantage, which is nonsense of course, but it's better to just erase culpability, I'd take the answers outside the board. Does that make sense?

No, the Thursday deadline is in case there are some of the ten that no one can get...

If the challenge is completed early, the voting will begin early.

For the benefit of those of us in other countries... can anyone suggest and help come to a consensus, what is a fair time during the day (EST) to make the questions available to most everyone everywhere at a reasonable time in all zones?

For example, I have no idea what time it is in Australia right now... I published the questions at 10pm EST... what time was that in Oz? Would publishing them earlier, like 5pm or 3pm be better?

I know not everyone is going to be on the internet at that exact time, it's not possible to coordinate it that way... but I want to post them at a time that is a consensus of a decent enough time for anyone to be able to get them in a reasonable time frame. Geez, that was poorly written... LOL... but I think you get the idea?

Any ideas?

Yeah, I guess you can't get everyone at every time. In Whitesaber's situation, it was a matter of not being around for a day or two... that happens and you play the game the best you can when you can be around. With the time zones, who knows... hrmmmmmmmmmm.... meditate on this, I will.

The game is dragging on and people are becoming less interested. Is there any way to have challenges twice a week or something else added to the game?

Otherwise within the next two months I think everyone will have just given up....

Well, after this week we'll join the teams... it'll be every PLAYER for themselves and we'll try to find a way to speed it up... the only reason we drag it out is because everyone needs a chance to participate and isn't on everyday. Most RPG's follow the same pattern... it's all about participation.
