View Full Version : Entire Saga in One Sitting!

I meant to do this a lot earlier, but yesterday, I finally did it!
That's right, I watched the entire SW saga in one sitting! All 12 hours, all 6 movies, Episodes I-VI in a row! Granted, I did take short breaks to grab a bite to eat, but no longer than a half hour each.
Has anyone else done this? If so, how has it changed your view of the saga as a whole?

In fact, I had planned a SW marathon for yesterday but I had to call it off till June. I inited a few of my SW fan friends but we coulddn't arrange a 13 hour party on the say day when all of us could make it. My first desire to do it was the 19th, the day I saw it last year, but that would have been impossible to schedule with anyone but myself, on a Friday.
So, answer is no, I've not done it yet. But ASAP, in June hopefully ASAP, it's a done deal.

That's funny, because I did it on the 19th, (which WAS yesterday, when I posted this topic!) but it was by accident! I realized during the marathon that it was the perfect day to do it! Crazy.

I can't say I watched the entire saga in one sitting, but a few months ago I did make a point of watching all 6 films in chronological order (1-6) over the course of about 5 days. And yes, watching them in order like this does give you a much different - and much richer - perspective on the story and characters. It also makes the weaker films in the series feel much stronger when they are supported by all the other material. I made a point of watching Ep 3 and Ep 4 on the same day, back to back, to see how the end of the PT blended into the beginning of the OT, when viewed immediately, one right after the other... and I have to say, that was a pretty amazing thing to watch. I was suprised by how natural it felt, storywise, but especially in terms of the visuals. It made me realize just what a masterstroke it was on Lucas's part to show the interiors of the Blockade Runner at the end of ROTS, because it makes that transition into ANH virtually seamless.

I was actually talking with a friend yesterday about doing this! He just got the chance to watch RotS for the first time yesterday after a week or more of proding.
We talked about watching them all together but its hard to find the time.
At this point, I'll be able to watch the PT one day and then the OT, the next. I am going to do that this week.

I don't think I could do it. I can barely sit through one of the LOTR extended editions without getting antsy. So maybe one trilogy at a time. But I doubt it.

I have watch them more than once this way. :D
Had to see the diference between watching them 1 - 6 and then 4, 5, 6, 1, 2 & 3. ;)
Still get more feeling out of the OT than the PT but I like them all. Giving into toilet breaks and grabbing food it only takes 13hrs all up to do.
I recommend it to anyone. :)
I also know quiet a few aussies have done this. :happydance:
I wish I could do it in a cinema. :(

I did this the week ROTS was released. I watched the movies in release order and then went to the theatre to watch ROTS.
Since then, my brother and I have watched 1-6 twice and out of order (1, 4, 5, 2, 3, 6) once.

I don't think I could get my friends to sit still that long either, although it would make it a lot easier since we could get all snarky. My favorite SW-movie experiences have all been heavy with the snark.
Alas, we all work such different schedules that the possibilities of knocking out such a huge block of time is near-impossible. Not to mention half of them would think I'm crazy, no matter how much we watched the OT in high school.
Might try it this summer, though. Knowing some of my pals, vacation time + not enough money for real vacation just might equal Star Wars marathon drinking game.

I still haven't done this yet. One of these days I'm gonna clear a Saturday or Sunday for it.
What I might have to do first, and would recommend it until I prove myself wrong, is watch a different series single trilogy for practice. Many people don't think they can make a whole day of movies, and I don't blame them. But if you spend a day watching something like the Back to the Future trilogy, then a few days or weeks later watch the Indy trilogy, another break, then maybe another trilogy, you might find it easier to tack on the OT after the PT in one sitting.

I couldn't wait that long. I originally watch the all films with a 24 hour period when ROTS came out. Once the dvd came out I watch them all in one sitting twice within two weeks so I could watch them once 1 - 6 and then 4 - 6, 1 - 3.
I've saw them again when I watch them on paytv. In fact then I saw 9 in a row. They showed in the following order 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. There was a count down of memorable moments between films.
Also once I got the original film release dvds i've done it again.
If you start just after breakfast it gives you plenty of time to take a break if you need.

Obviously you've got it covered. My suggestion was for those who weren't used to watching over 12 hours of movies in one day, myself included. Your average person isn't exactly prepared for that type of event, which is why I recommended a sort of training exercise.

Actually it also has to do with the anticipation of watching your favourite movie series. The andrelain rushes and you just forget about time. If I was going to practice it would also be with SW films or the cartoons.
Most people I know sit down and watch tv for 6 hours or so. Hence the practice isn't needed.

If things go to plan tomorrow is the day. Just gotta decide whether to watch them 1-6 or OT then PT. There are many pros and cons for either selection.
I have the stuff ready to cook myself a good fry up in the morning. Then pizza for dinner as it's easy so don't have to spend time making it. I have a crate of beer and plenty of fruit juice. Oh and loads of chocolate left over from Christmas, so I think I'm all ready.......:thumbs-up:

I don't HATE Phantom per se - it just isn't as great as the rest. There are some good points about it, but there are lots of flat long talking scenes as well. Like on Tatooine and Coruscant, they just talk, and they talk, and they talk. It's my least favourite of the 6 as well.

I like the talking scenes. TPM is my favorite of the prequels, and my second favorite of the saga (after ESB).
I think if people gave it half a chance, they'd see it's not nearly as bad as the media and fanboys have been insisting for the past seven and a half years.
I haven't done a complete saga marathon yet, although I've done a partial one. In 2005, when ROTS came out in the theaters, a friend and I watched TPM, AOTC, then went to see ROTS, then ANH. We were so exhausted by the end of ANH that we didn't get to ESB and ROTJ.

I've found so much to enjoy about TPM - it's aging really well.
Provides the foundation for the entire saga -
Jedi in the glory years -
Qui Gon.......that alone.
Obi Wan as a Padawan and sulking like Anakin.
Ewan as Obi Wan and Liam as Qui Gon - wonderful - that fantastic entrance as Obi Wan senses something amiss while Qui Gon does not; but we hear Qui Gon tell Obi Wan to focus on the here and now thus introducing the Living Force and we now realize there are two sides to the lightside with Qui Gon championing the Living Force and the Jedi Council, including the sage Yoda, all on the side of the Unifying Source - which they will learn to regret.
The Jedi Council and the Jedi Temple - first glimpses of both.
Anakin as the innocent, sweet child who only cares about giving to others.
Shmi and the unbreakable bond between mother and child that the Jedi always refused to believe is a natural gift.
The midichlorian concept - others have a problem with it - I love it as a measurement of force potential....and that we get a glimpse of just how special the chosen one is.
We get to witness the first meeting of the future parents of Luke and Leia - the groundwork laid for the japor snippet that will add even more tears to the end of RotS.
The snarky, sneaky snake Palpatine as the senator from Naboo - Padme and Palaptine share the same home planet.....and that he is already (and probably had previously) manipulating events for the future, thus changing it.
Jar Jar's beautiful underwater home city. and speaking of - even Jar Jar in moderation is a good thing.
NABOO - the waterfalls, the architecture - seeing the future route of Padme's funeral....
The planet city of Coruscant.
Seeing Tatooine again after all these years! - priceless.
Watto! what a great character and wonderfully animated.
The first CG Yoda = the first time we see him in a full body walk.
Darth Maul - great villian plus the introduction of the concept of only two Sith at a time: one in power and one to crave that power.
Duel of the Fates = wonderful music, fantastic duel de trois
The death of Qui Gon - powerful acting by Ewan; the story of how the training of the chosen one fell to someone who did not believe it to be the right thing to do (and that feeling will complicate the relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin) but he was fulfilling the dying wish of his master; the music we will hear at another funeral: for Padme.
Meesa like it very much.
and regarding the actual topic of the the thread - I've had two different marathons over two different days: OT then PT and vice versa. but never in one sitting. but one of these days.....

Question for those who have. Did you feel that a normal snack break was adequate in between ROS and ANH, or did you think just a little more time was necessary to separate the two trilogies while still keeping them close?
Jedi Master Harrison
02-04-2007, 01:53 PM
Personally, I wanted to make sure I enjoyed every film individually as well as watching the Saga as a collective. So I took a break of between half an hour and an hour between each film. So I could either have a meal, go for a quick walk around or post here for a bit to tell of my progress. That way I found that I wasn't too tired come the end, although I have to say I had to watch ROTJ again soon after to make sure I had fully appreciated the conclusion to the Saga.
Also, this gave me time to look into any questions that entered my mind whilst watching and also could collect my thoughts on the film or it's place within the Saga, without rushing into the next film. I think I actually had the shortest break in between ROTS and ANH, as I wanted to consider its continuity and also check out differences in the quality of the films etc. To be honest I think to take all this in would require more than one all day sitting, but it is a great experience and well worth it, if you can afford the time and have the peace to do it right. :)

My friends on OS boards thinks it is cool. My friends I see in person rarely like scifi and thinks it is weird to "waste" that much time. The friends who do like scifi, aren't into SW that much so they think it is ok but nothing special. Mind you I have watched 8 hours of Star Trek with them which they do admire me for.
I don't gloat or you would have read about my feat before this in the thread. Mind you I did boast, which is in this thread previously.
The Clone Wars actually are part of the saga and do lead directly into Ep 3.

Yes. I ate during the films like you do in the movies and have light meals prepare so I didn't need long break. Longest one I had was 15 mins to heat food and say goodnight to my husband since he was going to bed. No, he wasn't watching the films and was on a different tv before that.
Mind you, I am a sucker for a SW film :like:

Although I do acknowledge them, I hardly think they're required while having "The Sagathon". Simply put, they're just too different. Different medium, different storytelling techniques. They're pretty much what GL intended for them to be. Filler until ROS came out.

I tip my cap to anybody who can accomplish this. I'm couch potato at heart, and I don't think I would have the stamina for this...the most I could probably do is one trilogy in a sitting. Though one day when I was in college I watched the entire "The Stand" mini series in a sitting, because they were showing it all at once on the Sci-Fi channel.

Not like my wife would let me do this. Too much house work to do. :D
Sent your wife shopping for the day. Send any kids to their friends place for a sleep over.
I sent my hubby to golf and told to spend time with his friends after.

That would work if she was the kind of wife who was prone to all day shopping fests. She really isn't. In fact, she hates it when her mother wants to drag her around for a few hours of shopping, let alone a whole day. Oh well.

Send to a spa treatment for a day. There must be something she enjoys to do that would take her out for the day. How about her friends and spending time with them?

It seems that the most difficult problem I'd have is not sinking back into my OT mindset when watching the OT. By this, I mean the feeling I had when I would watch them all the time before the PT came out. I grew up with the OT, so it's hard to look at all six as one giant piece of art. However, watching them all in a setting would help, and the improvements in picture quality and new scenes on the dvds helps as well.
Another problem is paying attention to the OT. I've watched them so much that sometimes my mind just coasts through chunks of it. I catch myself not paying attention as closely as I should. My mind is just so used to watching it all play out. And when you start watching the OT after already sitting through about 7 hours ... well, I could see my mind begging to go on autopilot shortly after jumping into ANH.

Then start with the OT and finish with PT. That was one reason I had to do it more than once. :)

I'd just feel like I copped out if that was how I enjoyed the sagathon for the first time. :P I could see doing it that way after that maiden voyage though.
Thinking more on making it special, maybe I should invest in a Jedi robe to wear throughout. :holosid: (we really need a plain jedi smiley)

True I did watch it 1 to 6 first and then revisited it the way they came out.
Doing it as a jedi would mean you would be able to to use the force to help you complete.

And doing it as a smuggler would mean I may shoot the television. (mind you, without it attempting to shoot at me. Everyone knows Miasmo shoots first.)

I was worried about that as well when I started my marathon, but I didn't let it deter me. What helped was the fact I was keeping a running log of my marathon here at the GS. It kept me on track.

Nice to share your experience on how you stayed on target. :)
I was too much like a kid on red lollies and eaten too much sugar. I looked forward to not missing anything. My new tv gave me the ability to see with more clarity the movies so I was discovering things I had only read about.
Should I be worried by my enthusiam to spend over 12 hours in front of the tv?:scratchchin:

Sorry I've been out of here for so long, but now I'm back!
Anyway, I am planning to watch the whole thing soon, but I don't know when.

Right now, I'm in the middle of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. And for some reason, I find myself unable to finish it. Why, I don't know. Perhaps I'm just not in the mood to watch it.
