....if so, what are your favorite and least favorite CDs....?

I have been a RUSH fan for over 20 years and I have all their CD's!

I saw them last year in concert in an Ampitheater for about the 6th or 7th time!

I think my favorite CD is Hemispheres. I love Cygnus and Trees!

Great Great Band!

I've liked Rush pretty casually (radio hits) over the last 25 years or so and only recently really, really started digging into their albums and DVDs. (I had a friend to burn me the remasters of albums I didn't own). I'm up to Vapor Trails now in listening to the discocraphy, which I've done almost exclusively (and sequentially) over the past month I'd say....seriously, all I've been listening to is their catalog.

I'm torn between Moving Pictures and Counterparts as my favorite album. :)

Which ones have been your lesser favs, P-Ray?

Looking forward to that new CD hopefully by year's end...

Great to hear of another Rush fan.

Probably the most underrated band in rock and roll history.

I have seen them 5 times myself and each time I am amazed at how well they play and how great they sound for only a three piece.

I too own every album and would consider myself a fanatic.

Counterparts is a masterpiece. Moving Pictures is great all the way through. I am in the minority of Rush fans on this one, but I absolutely love Grace Under Pressure.

Farewell to Kings is probably my least favorite, but Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 are phenominal songs.

Have you seen the R30 DVD yet? Absolutely awesome.

Yes, I own both R30 and Rush In Rio....both phenomenal. Even tho' the sound is a bit suffering on Rio, what a crowd to compensate...! :)

You're not alone on Grace Under Pressure. I love it as well. In fact, minus Vapor Trails (which I'm presently digesting and haven't quite ranked yet), here is how I rank the studio albums (top being most preferred):

Moving Pictures
Counterparts
Permanent Waves
Grace Under Pressure
A Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres
Presto
Signals
Test For Echo
Roll The Bones
2112 (overrated I think)
Power Windows
Hold Your Fire
Caress Of Steel
Fly By Night
Rush

I don't have R30 yet but I do have RUSH in Rio!

I at first didn't like Grace under Pressure when it was first releas. It is now definitely one of my favorites!

I think that my least favorite is Hold You Fire! I really only thoroughly enjoy 1 or 2 songs on it.

I agree with you that they are a very underrated Band but very incredible!

A friend of mine(Count Dookie) just bought Neil Peart's book about his motorcycle trip after his Wife and daughter died so I am looking foward to reading that after he is done!

A crowd of 40,000 "singing" an instrumental. And watch the wave of humanity as they are playing YYZ.

Amazing.

JSunday, don't forget to check out the 2004 EP, Feedback. 7 cover tunes from the late Sixties. It's pretty interesting and they absolutely kick ass on Crossroads.

I don't have R30 yet but I do have RUSH in Rio!

You must. :) Really improved quality too, in terms of sound. I like the Rio setlist better, but the opening medley to the R30 show alone is worth it.

I at first didn't like Grace under Pressure when it was first releas. It is now definitely one of my favorites!

I've pretty much liked it since it came out. Some fans really moan about the keyboards, but I think they capture that sound WELL.

I think that my least favorite is Hold You Fire! I really only thoroughly enjoy 1 or 2 songs on it.

It's my least favorite of the post 1980 releases too, although I'd rather listen to it all the way through than their first three releases. I think Rush is definitely their weakest record.

A friend of mine(Count Dookie) just bought Neil Peart's book about his motorcycle trip after his Wife and daughter died so I am looking foward to reading that after he is done!

I want to read this too. It's made listening to Vapor Trails a more emotional listen, that's for sure.

South Americans are like that for a lot of bands. Iron Maiden also has a Rio DVD and it's just as empassioned. It makes for a great concert experience. Yeah singing YYZ...pretty cool stuff. :)

I have it too....but haven't given it a listen yet, aside from the songs they played live from it on the R30 DVD. It's next on my "list" tho'.....

I agree.

Alot of 80's music that was heavy on the synths now sound VERY dated, but Rush's keyboard heavy albums still hold up, IMHO.

You think the OT/PT arguments are bad on SW boards? You should see some of the pre-Signals/post-Signals arguments on the Counterparts Message Board. Right up there with Roth/Hagar nonsense you find with VH fans.

LOL....I can imagine. I knew someone once who really got into a whizzing contest on a Rush board. (I'm also a Kiss fan, and we have those types too).

Yeah, I think Signals, Grace, Power Windows....all capture a really great sound from the band. I look at it as just another phase of the band. Those songs are always awesome to hear live.....(Between The Wheels, Distant Early Warning, Marathon, Mystic Rhythms, Subdivisions).

Dutch
05-15-2006, 03:16 PM
In my opinion, Lifeson's best solo ever is from "Between the Wheels".

When I read they were playing that on the R30 tour, I about crapped my pants.

Those mid-80's albums are also very nostalgic for me because that's when I discovered them.

Give Caress of Steel another listen. It may grow on you. I like that better than 2112, which I feel is also a little overrated.

JSunday

Yeah, COS was definitely a step UPWARD from the first two records.

If you're at all interested, I reviewed all the Rush albums at the following EZboard site...(all in one thread)....sequentially. Just finished up moments ago (lol) with Vapor Trails. Give it a looksee if you'd like. I'd be curious to get your thoughts. I've pretty much listened to NOTHING but Rush over the past month. It's a good read over time if you have the inclination....along with the comments and debate from friends. All good-natured stuff. Enjoy...!

I take back my first statement! I don't even own the first RUSH cd! I never liked it and definitely can't stand John Rutsey as a drummer. It's hard to go back to the 1st RUSH cd after listening to Neil Peartt first.

I agree with Dutch! Give Caress of Steel and Fly by Night another chance(especially Fly by Night).

And BTW, Count Dookie and I are also huge KISS fans ;)

Very cool. :) I've seen 'em only about 12 times over the years myself. I grew up in Vegas and aside from a quick appearance in '75 (which I missed), they didn't come back til the Creatures tour '82'-'83....so that was my first time out. (Saw one of their last U.S. appearances in makeup til '96).

I was fortunate enough to catch their '95 convention tour (Dallas) and that was a real hoot. Great value for $100...given the all day affair. It seemed like a LOT then...but they'd never do something like that again. Hell, their "platinum" backstage package (meet 'em for two minutes and a picture) is 10 times that! LOL Let alone sitting indian style in front of them playing acoustically for two-and-a-half hours in what amounted to a very intimate crowd of easily less than 1000 people....and about a 2 hour Q&A session just prior.

I had to come and speak up....P-Ray called me. When I first heard of RUSH in 1979 I was living in the Phillipines and heard 2112. I have loved that album from day one.

Then I kinda lost touch until I came back to the states in the middle of 1980. It wasn't until almost 1981 that I bought Moving Pictures. This is my all time favorite Album. I really love Permanent Waves, Caress of Steel, All The Worlds a Stage is Rush's Alive for KISS.

I really like Signals and Grace Under Pressure. It is around the time after GUP that I was not really liking what RUSH was putting out. I still remain a fan and recently borrowed RUSH in Rio DVD from a friend.......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have also bought Neil Peart's book, Ghost Rider. Very good and a slow read. I usually like a fast fun book, but with this you really get to learn what Neil is about and can truely appreciate that he a well learned man. Great stuff!!

Paul's done with the disc but does not have a distributor right now. Kiss has a label, as does Simmons (god, what a wretched album that was), but I'm guessing Paul is abstaining from both in order to not have to share any profits with him....which I can't blame him for. Funny how Winger can reunite and get a contract but Paul can't get an album out. So, hopefully before too long.

A good friend of mine is really close friends with Eric Singer, so I tend to get some scoops here and there. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Glad this is making you want to break out the Rush. :) Very cool. I'm really enjoying this rediscovery journey of mine. I've always been a closeted Rush fan, and I'm happy to say...I'M OUT...!!!!

I forgot to mention that when my cousin was visiting a couple of months ago, he downloaded several RUSH albums that he didn't have in his collection, into his IPOD!

Very cool...! I have 'em all now on CD-R (my friend mentioned above) and am in the process of buying them all....(because I'm anal and I like the cover art, liner notes, etc.). I, too, have all of them in my IPOD. I only have a 4 gig nano, so I had to clear about half the IPOD out for it...LOL. But I can listen to any record at any moment. It's nice.

(Jesus Christ) Suffered and died for us in case you didn't know!

So he's heard the Gene Simmons solo album too then, eh? :D I felt like I was suffering and dying as well....

Your album review thread was awesome. I gotta admit I could never go into that kind of deatil myself cause I'm just not a writer, but you did a great job.

Hey, thanks. It kind sounds like you're saying the same thing over and over....(really cool riff....excellent break after the chorus....driving bass sound....LOL). But in all fairness, I gave these albums MULTIPLE listens before reviewing them....and freely admit that aside from Moving Pictures and a few others I haven't had YEARS to digest them. But most music critics give a record one cursory listen then review it. I wanted to be as fair as possible. Time will likely only improve those impressions....probably even in the cases where I liked an album less than others.

Just to add, Red Barchetta is definitely one of my favorite RUSH songs!

One of mine too. I just love that record. I know a lot of fanatics consider it the equivalent of Kiss' Destroyer (overrated), but I don't. Good music always and forever speaks for itself.....and as overplayed (maybe that's the better word) as Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight may be on the radio, nothing diminishes the fact that these are great songs. Counterparts, tho', is really close. I just think they nailed that puppy....

It is around the time after GUP that I was not really liking what RUSH was putting out. I still remain a fan and recently borrowed RUSH in Rio DVD from a friend.......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. I just this past weekend got my first surround sound system for my apartment...and last night watched about half of Rio. Very nice. In fact I'm going home at lunch to walk my pup (not a self-sex euphemism...I really mean "walk the dog"), and I think I'll pop it in and watch a bit more at pretty high volume. (Seriously guys, my wife was asleep on the couch and just the crowd noise before the show woke her up).

Here's a link to a couple recent Paul Stanley interviews, both in the same post by the way...one concerning Kiss info online and another regarding Kiss's recent induction by VH-1 Honors (that'll air at the end of the month, BTW...Kiss, Queen, Def Leppard, Judas Priest), which you all probably already knew about.

Anyhow, it's a good read:

Me too. Don't get me wrong. I'm not downloader (not that there's anything wrong with it) or CD-R guy....but I went from having about 4 Rush albums to over 20 almost overnight thanks to my buddy. So because of that (not despite it) I'm going out and buying 'em now. Some people would say "that's stupid when you got 'em for nothin," but I look at 'em as temptation to BUY them. I may not Rush out (lol) to buy the first couple albums. My focus right now is on Kings onward...then working my way back. I've also gotten some of the hits and live packages on Amazon of late for good prices. Within a few months I'll have a smokin' catalog.

I recently read on kissasylum.com Paul's interview and no mention of his album. I am really disappointed with Gene's work.

Funny thing is I like Gene's stuff on the past few Kiss records (Psycho Circus, Carnival Of Souls, and Revenge). I think it's actually been stronger than Paul's. So his solo album really, really let me down. What garbage. It makes his '78 Kiss solo album look like Abbey Road by comparison.

Anyway, still reading Neil Peart's book. I really like it and now I want to see RUSH again!!!!!!!!

This is on my list too.

I have grabbed Fly by Night, Caress of Steel and 2112 to start off my RUSH listening enjoyment!

Excellent! To show you what a dork I am, now that I've listened to all the albums in order multiple times I've put all the names in a cup and pulling 'em out...and that's the album I'm listening to next. I need therapy.

Nice find. That makes sense I guess.

I'm the same way. It's all about the collection and the covers!

That it is..! And let's not forget the lyrics. I've had to print them out online to read along to while listening to my CD-Rs. Ugh. No more.

As long as their hearts and health are there, I suppose the thee's no real limit to how long. I suspect it'll come down to desire first, health second. (They all seem in good health, but in your 50s you never know what creeps up...arthritis, cancer, etc. Not to be negative, but Neil knows full well how quickly that all can end). My hope is that these guys can and want to do this 10-15 more years. I think if their abilities and faculties remain, I don't see that being impossible.

I've never seen them. That WILL change next time out.

It doesn't make the songs any stronger. ;) I agree...I think that their first album is clearly their worst. It's fun and rock and roll and all....but there's very little resemblance here to what they would become. That itself isn't bad...but the band got LOTS better, that's for sure.

I think the band really came into its own not on 2112 but rather on A Farewell To Kings. Xanadu is an incredible piece. I think they just hit a certain new level with that record and never looked back.

Completely agree. It's no coincidence that Kings is the first album where they really took their time creating it, a few months as opposed to the weeks spent recording all of their previous albums.

I think 2112 was the album that saved them (as far as not getting dropped from a label) but (some songs on) Kings and all of Hemispheres are both much better.

How are they not even considered for the R'n'R hall of fame yet, when groups like the Pretenders and people like Elvis Costello are in.

That boggles the mind.

More random Rush coolness:

The intro video for the R30 DVD. The animation that morphs all of their album covers (except Show of Hands) together.

The Jerry Stiller Intro for the 30th anniversary tour. Hilarious

The intermission video on the R30 DVD with the Rush bobbleheads. Very clever.

Yeah, that's a fun DVD for sure. :D

I think 2112 was the move in the Kings direction, except without the attention to detail and refinement, which you basically mention. The songwriting became stronger...the arrangements (which comes with that time spent, also as you mentioned Dutch). Yeah, fully agree with your breakdown. Overall I think 2112 is very good, but not the icon that it's considered by many. HOWEVER, in all fairness, at the time I'm sure it was a pretty momentous step up over the records they'd been doing (no offense to Caress fans intended) and compared to what else was out there in the music industry. In 1976 that was some pretty cool stuff, I'm sure. I think it suffers a bit in hindsight and over time IMO, but I never had that perspective of being 16 in 1976 either. (I was a mere seven and Kiss was my love). Rush's best stuff was still very much to come.....and it really started on Kings. (I actually like each of their records progressively more from album-to-album through Moving Pictures. Signals was a slight drop, but after a 5-star effort you could only equal it or go down some).

As for the HOF, I don't have a clue....except to say Kiss, Pink Floyd, Maiden, and until recently, Sabbath too.

Kiss and Rush released their debuts the same year and should've RIGHTLY BOTH been inducted in their first year of eligibility (1999)...Rush for their continued music excellence and growth, and Kiss for their influence, fun, and longevity. Both great for similar and not-so-similar reasons. The fact that NEITHER are in is just.....sad.

Don't think I could rank a top 40, but here is my favorite 10:

1. Dreamline
2. Subdivisions
3. Between the Wheels
4. Leave That Thing Alone
5. Tom Sawyer
6. Mystic Rhythms
7. R30 Medley
8. Afterimage
9. Limelight
10. Natural Science

Quite an "off the beaten path" list, I know...but what can I say.

JSunday

I LOVE all of your choices...and it's great to see "Wheels" that high as well. That song's a monster, especially on R30...and too often ridiculed by Rush fans. Great selection. Mystic Rhythms and Afterimage are wonderful picks as well. :D

I'm doing a "top 32" list...one for every year of the band. I've picked the songs...now I've just got to rank them. Check back this weekend for the start of it. (probably in its own thread with commentary about each song).

I’m compiling a list of my top 32 Rush tunes….(one for each year of their existence)…and holy @#!$, this is quite a daunting task…! I’ve got my top 3 and that’s about it. It took about a week just to decide on the top 32, and I had to add 5 bonus picks in order to not feel guilty about the songs I’d left off.

Maybe I'll just rank the top 10 and talk about the others in no particular order. That might be more fair....to me. :D

I'm sure you will do a better job than me Sunday, but let me give you my quick "Live CD" reviews.

All The World's a Stage--Most of the 1970's Rushheads that refuse to acknowledge anything after Moving Pictures(after being appalled by Signals) will point to this as a great live set, but I think it is pretty poor. Sounds awful and Geddy's vocals are in full "BANSHEE" mode. Skip it.

Exit Stage Left--Great live album with a strong set of great songs. Recording levels are a little low though.

A Show of Hands--I love the setlist, but don't particularly like the sound. Was Alex even at these shows or did they have a synthesizer playing his parts? :D . Gotta love the only live version of Witch Hunt, though (although that will be rectified on the upcoming GUP release with Replay X3) and it sounds great here.

Different Stages--IMHO, hands down the best live album. Love the loud ,in-your-face sound of this album. Another great setlist with Limelight and Analog Kid finally making a live album appearance. Presto and the 80's albums got the shaft on this one, though, with only Show Don't Tell making it. 2112 in it's entirely is awesome, though, and dare I say they sound better here than the studio version of it. The bonus disk is nice, too. Personally, I think that the '77 concert disc is way better than ATWAS.

Rush in Rio--I don't have the CD but I have the DVD and it is a killer. AWESOME setlist and the South American crowd is incredible. Still can't rank it higher than Different Stages, though but a very close second.

R30-- more of a DVD (although there are accompanying CD's with the deluxe version) Very good also. The R30 Medley is one of the greatest ideas they've ever had and it is executed perfectly. Fabulous opener for the set.

BTW, here's some news about the new album:

RUSH Hope To Release New Studio Album In Early 2007 - May 22, 2006

Canadian rock legends RUSH are hoping to release a new studio album early next year, to be a followed by an extensive tour. Speaking to MoreSugar.com, RUSH bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee said, "With a bit of luck we will have an album out early in 2007 and then go out on the road maybe next spring if we are lucky. It's a little too early to tell yet what direction the new material is taking, but Alex [Lifeson, guitar] and I are just having a blast. We are getting songs written so we are getting there. We kind of record while we write and we would say that we will write and record for the duration of this year. You just never know where it is going to go. I think that's what keeps it fun for us and I am glad that there are people out there that appreciate that."

I know there not the most popular band, but I feel that they are really respected.

Respected by musicians, yes. (Which is all that REALLY matters). But the critical press mauls them and have for their entire career. But it's actually easing up now as critics realize (30 years on) that they have persevered and have a tremendous fanbase. So expect within 10 years for their entire back catalogue to receive glowing reviews in a bit of revisionist history as the winds blow a different way ;)

Really well done, and I generally agree with you on all your major points...! (espeically about ATWAS, which not only sounds kinda bad but doesn't feature my favorite era of the band anyhow, so no real surprise I'd like the others better).

I've tweaked things again, having listened to almost every record at least once since those initial reviews.

(based on 5-stars)

Rush: 2 -
Fly By Night: 2 +
Caress Of Steel: 2.5 -
2112: 3.5
A Farewell To Kings: 4 +
Hemispheres: 4 -
Permanent Waves: 4.5 +
Moving Pictures: 5
Signals: 4.5 -
Grace Under Pressure: 4.5
Power Windows: 3 -
Hold Your Fire: 3 -
Presto: 4 -
Roll The Bones: 3.5 -
Counterparts: 5 -
Test For Echo: 4 -
Vapor Trails: 4.5 -

All that being said, here's how I rank their studio albums in intended order of personal preference:

1. Moving Pictures (eliminated the minus]
2. Counterparts
3. Permanent Waves
4. Grace Under Pressure
5. Signals (has moved up significantly - really love this record more and more)
6. Vapor Trails (has moved up as well - great record with almost no real weak areas aside from the sound)
7. A Farewell To Kings (fallen, but with no ill-respect intended...just getting to know other records better)
8. Presto (moved up one - great record whose lows are still quite listenable)
9. Test For Echo (I'm really getting into this album more and more)
10. Hemispheres (has fallen quite a bit, and mainly due to the Cygnus track, which I'm not fond of...which while only 1 of 4 songs is half the album in time. But we're still in the 4-star range, so no great knock here)
11. 2112 (bumped up with repeated listens - I'm warming up to it)
12. Roll The Bones (basically switches places with 2112 - this is really a half great/half blase record)
13. Hold Your Fire (basically switches places with Power Windows)
14. Power Windows (about three tracks aside this record continues to not impress me much - the weakest album after 1975 IMHO)
15. Caress Of Steel (last three are unchanged, except that I bumped COS and Fly down by a minus each...just to give distance between what would come after)
16. Fly By Night
17. Rush

Dutch

You know, I have yet to talk to another person who has mentioned that song. I love it. It is so damn sad, and it doesn't sound like any other song they did before or since. Ben Mink, who played violin on that cut, played guitar on Geddy Lee's solo album from 2000. It is a pretty decent album. I heard a reviewer describe it as what the 2000 Rush album WOULD HAVE sounded like, and I agree with that.

How can you not feel these lyrics, eh? And the music just enhances the sentiment 10 fold:

Losing It

The dancer slows her frantic pace
In pain and desperation
Her aching limbs and downcast face
Aglow with perspiration

Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire
With just the briefest pause
The flooding through her memory
The echoes of old applause

She limps across the floor
And closes her bedroom door...

The writer stare with glassy eyes
Defies the empty page
His beard is white, his face is lined

And streaked with tears of rage

Thirty years ago, how the words would flow
With passion and precision
But now his mind is dark and dulled
By sickness and indecision

And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more...

Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we'd like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you, the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee...

Well, I think Rush is a GREAT band live....so I suppose most of them could apply. I really think the early stuff (thru 2112) sounds better live.

It might be easier for me to list songs that sound better in the studio. Most notably perhaps is Xanadu....which is a pretty heavily produced song. (still think they do a good live version tho'). It's one of my favorite Rush songs and I think it definitely sounds better on Kings than live.

I'm not really sure if I've ever heard a song of theirs that sounded crappy live..... Good question tho'.

I just wanted to chime in here saying that I'm a [SIZE=14]HUGE[SIZE=14] Rush fan and have been for years. It is really good seeing that other fans of the PT are also Rush fans and it makes me realize that there's just something that makes sense about that. Hold Your Fire is my favorite album of theirs and my favorite song Time Stand Still. But that I love all of their albums and all their songs. I've seen them in concert thirteen times now. :D

I know this is more Kiss-related but.....

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley and ex-GUNS N' ROSES axeman Gilby Clarke joined an all-star band consisting of Rob Zombie (vocals), Slash (guitar; VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N' ROSES), Tommy Lee (drums; MÖTLEY CRÜE), and Scott Ian (bass — yes, bass; ANTHRAX) for a rendition of the KISS classic "God of Thunder" as a tribute to KISS at the first annual "VH1 Rock Honors" Thursday night (May 25).

Pick of Slash & Ace: editorial.gettyimages.com...4487&cdi=0

Meanwhile, QUEEN guitarist Brian May made a surprise appearance with FOO FIGHTERS, who were paying tribute to QUEEN at the event.

"VH1 Rock Honors" Setlist – May 25, 2006 at Mandalay Bay Events Center - Las Vegas, NV:

FOO FIGHTERS w/ Brian May and Roger Taylor:

01. Tie Your Mother Down

QUEEN:
01. Under Pressure
02. The Show Must Go On
03. We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions

GODSMACK:
01. Medley: The Hellion / Electric Eye / Victim Of Changes / Hell Bent For Leather

JUDAS PRIEST:
01. Breakin' The Law
02. You've Got Another Thing Comin'
03. The Green Manalishi (with the Two Pronged Crown)

THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS:
01. Photograph

DEF LEPPARD:
01. Rock Of Ages
02. Rocket
03. 20th Century Boy

All-Star Band featuring Rob Zombie, Ace Frehley, Slash, Gilby Clarke, Scott Ian, Tommy Lee:
01. God Of Thunder

KISS:
01. Detroit Rock City
02. Deuce
03. Love Gun
04. Makin' Love

Highlights, according to a BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor:
* FOO FIGHTERS: AMAZING
* Seeing Ace hug Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley (it won't be long now)
* DEF LEPPARD: Their set was suprisingly good.
* Vince Neil's old lady falling flat on her face.

Lowlights:
* THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS (Wow, I didn't know a group could be so bland)
* Rob Zombie coming in too early on "God of Thunder", just as the solo switched from Ace to Slash.
* What the F is going on with Rick Savage? Is it bad plastic surgery or what?
* $7.50 for a Sam Adams.

Surreal Moment of the Evening:
Towards the end of the KISS set (but before "Makin' Love" was played), all of the honorees were brought out for a final bow. At one point Ace was next to Tommy Thayer (in the Spaceman makeup). It was really strange...

Circumstances is definitely one of their more underrated tunes. I love that one. Wish they would bust that out as a surprise blast from the past on a future tour.

Geddy probably has trouble hitting those high notes anymore, though.

Natural Science on "Rio" is a great live cut, isn't it? When I read that they were playing that on the Vapor Trails tour, I was very excited.

Another good read is "Contents Under Pressure". It's short (and not as informative as CHEMISTRY, I hear) but a good read nonetheless. You Kiss fans will enjoy it. There are some good stories of tours they did with Kiss in the early 1970's. A lot of mutual respect with those two bands.

The next day I wrote to Alex and Geddy,

On the drive back yesterday, I did have the opportunity to listen to the new songs with some objectivity, in my favorite listening environment, and I wanted to tell you I think they are great! The freshest stuff we have done since — well, ever!

As I intuited when I first heard your song sketches, there is something very different about the character of these songs, and I’m really pleased by that.

I mean to say — at our ages!"

Anyone pick up Snakes & Arrows, the first RUSH album of all-new material since 2002....? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Seeing them on opening night day after tomorrow...! Can't wait. My first Rush show. Here's my take on the new album:

Well this album is truly an amalgam of everything since 2000. There’s a little bit of the last three original studio albums, as well a few clear influences carried over from the band digging into their roots on Feedback….as well as more than a few dips from Geddy Lee’s 2000 solo effort, My Favorite Headache. There are even, in spots, a small handful of guitar nods to Alex's Victor solo effort as well.

All of that has somehow congealed to create a Rush album in Snakes & Arrows that is, despite those influences, entirely unique.

So what bothered you last time around on Vapor Trails? Muddy guitars? Shoddy production/mastering? A chorus of Geddys? Well, ok…maybe not all of that bothered you, but those were the principle complaints when the boys last surfaced with all new material in 2002. So how did they fair 5 years later? Pretty damn well…! The production is spot on. And while there are some dirty guitar moments, there’s a lot of stripped down, clean work as well. It seems the boys blew the way the wind blew and let each track find its own identity and sound. And while Geddy does indeed have some of those “oooh-aaaah” background vocal moments reminiscent of Trails, those moments really are few and far between. In fact, some of the vocals are almost shockingly stripped down and right up front.

Here’s a look at the individual tracks and a few notes about each:

1, FAR CRY: Loved this song from the start, when it first officially previewed. It remains the single most up-tempo, driving tune on the album. The boys sure know how to begin a disc and we have no exception here. Interestingly enough, Far Cry is more exception than rule, so those expecting more of these Test For Echo/Counterparts-inspired tones might be in for a bit of a surprise….well….um….right away..! (A-)

2. ARMOR & SWORD: I kinda overlooked this the first listen. You get locked down in this “Ok, here’s the first song I haven’t heard yet” delirium and the next thing you know, you’re on track 3 and all you hear is the blood in your ears. On a second and third listen, this song quickly became a favorite. And now, about five full times in, it’s easily in my top 3-5 tunes on the record. The song has a really nice 6/8 time and eastern flavored guitar intro which segues into a wonderful Bravado-like strum. The lyrics here, like many of the songs on this album, reflect the uneasy present state of the western world, both internally and externally, with lyrics like “What should’ve been an armor becomes a sharp and angry sword” and “No one gets to their heaven without a fight.” One of my favorites. (A)

3. WORKIN’ THEM ANGELS: It’s growing on me, but it’s still in my bottom tier on the album…(but on a strong album, that’s not such a fall). Strong verse melody. Song about self-reflection: “All my life I’ve been workin’ them angels overtime, riding, diving, and flying just over the edge.” There’s a few abrupt melody changes, just before the chorus that’s a tad awkward. There’s a nice touch with a mandolin solo, though not quite as effective as it was on Test For Echo’s “Half The World.” Good if not great song. This one may continue to grow on me, so room for upward movement. (B)

4. THE LARGER BOWL: Yet another that didn’t leave much of a mark initially. And now it’s become a favorite of mine. The song is lyrically and melodically driven, speaking of the dichotomy and curiosity between the haves and have nots (“It’s somehow so badly arranged….such a lot of pain on the Earth”). In that way it’s very akin to Half The World…a lyrical sister of sorts. It has almost a folksy sound to it that depends on its repetition as part of its dramatic tension. It’s almost shockingly simplistic for a Rush song, which makes the country-influenced solo from Alex all the more spotlighted. It might be my favorite solo of his on the album. Simply this is a song that’s easily dismissed if you’re not careful. Don’t be too critical. Enjoy Rush driving a song with momentum over prowess. VERY different for a Rush tune, musically, and different here is a good thing. (A)

5. SPINDRIFT: This song begins with a creepy fade in that will bring back memories of hearing Witch Hunt for the first time, then it’s off into what is surely the heaviest song on the album, featuring some soaring Lee vocals and lyrics that continue to have a worldly worry and dread to them, “As the sun goes down on the western shore, it makes me feel uneasy.” At the 2:50 mark there’s this odd transition into a varied melody, “A little closer to you….where is the wind that will carry me?” But despite that bit of sonic awkwardness, it’s a driving, dark tune…both musically and in its sad pessimism. Loved the clip of it floating about and like it no less now. (A-)

6. THE MAIN MONKEY BUSINESS: Ok…wow. Very nice. Let’s get this bit of speculation out of the way: Yes, it’s the best instrumental since YYZ. While I still don’t think it has the virtuosity of that song or the varied structure of the wonderful La Villa Strangiato, Monkey Business is masterful in its own right, easily besting more “recent” (? …lol) efforts like Limbo, Where’s My Thing, and even the cool bass funk of Counterpart’s Leave That Thing Alone? Why? This is an unrelenting metal and melodic *******, that’s why. It also strives for dramatic tension over “look how fast I can play the notes.”TH3 The acoustical descent is initially and teasingly deceptive. The song INSTANTLY segues into this keyboard driven, dreamy part to which it will continually return, highlighted by some tasty, if reserved, tom work from Neil.. This part is like the main thoroughfare of a road…the spine of the song if you will…running north and south, and all the noodling that goes on around it are the east and west coast ditches, valleys, hills, and mountains around it. The first divergence is this truly badass riff that will make the Iron Maiden fans out there raise a lid and whisper, “Oh….nice.” Nothing lifted…but there’s just that flavor afoot. Then it’s a really heavy drum beat that takes us back to the main dreamy road….where we continue to diverge again and again. Alex takes on some really nice echoey tones in his solos, occasionally getting into the frantic when the pace picks up. Neil and Geddy build the pace up to this incredible franticness, and we’re back into the Maiden riff. The pace becomes pretty frantic, mellows, then builds again… as the song ultimately reaches its literal climax…and fades out with the same acoustic tease which first introduced it. This will make a great live addition and it gets better with subsequent listens. It’s about pace (the slowing and building)…the dramatic tension….over shear musicianship. It’s like they’re directing a scene in a movie with this music. (A)

7. THE WAY THE WIND BLOWS: This, in all fairness, is an amalgam (sue me…I like the word) of three different styles here. We have southern rock, progressive rock…no your head won’t explode mixing those two, surprisingly….and one of the most melodic, sweet choruses you’ve ever heard in a Rush song. Strangely this Frankenstein weirdness not only works, it’s arguably a top 3 song on the record…and just maybe, the best of the bunch of kooky bananas on this board game of Snakes & Arrows. It opens with this really cool, very light military-flavored snare (just like you’re watching Oliver Stone’s JFK), which segues into Alex’s tribute to the Allman Brother’s “Whipping Post” (no ****), and then this really cool progressive riff which lays heavy over the verse…only to pull a switcheroo and lighten up during a soft acoustic driven chorus. If you described to me this is what you wanted to do, I’d likely blow a snot bubble in my nose and say, “Good luck with that.” But then again, I don’t play in Rush either. Kids, arguably my favorite song. “From the middle east to the middle west, pray and pass the ammunition” continues what could be considered a concept album (depending on your definition) at this point. “We can only blow the way the wind blows. We can only bow to the here and now or be broken down blow-by-blow.” A remarkably melodic and catchy chorus. Only the coldest hearted will turn their nose to what might be the masterpiece of the album. (A +)

8. HOPE: This one I was looking forward to because Alex on acoustic is amazing and vastly underrated as a guitarist, historically…and instead of a Broon’s Bane, nylon stringed classical fare, we get a steel-stringed, aggreesive-but-sweet Jimmy Page-like (think Earl’s Court…1975) melody that reads like a song without lyrics. Only this song doesn’t need them because the chords and notes are the words. There’s a very eastern-flavored thing going on here. This better get played live. If only it was two minutes longer. (A)

9. FAITHLESS: It’s a good song, but we’ve not much of a building dynamic here. Not the catchiest melody ever, and it’s not likely you’ll be humming it in the shower anytime soon. Lyrically I love it…as it deals with finding spirituality outside the conventional means, arguing that “I don’t believe in belief…I don’t have faith in faith….I believe in love and that’s faith enough for me.” The biggest problem in the chorus is that it smacks of wrapping a vocal melody around the lyrics a bit too strenuously. It’s not fatal and it’s not entirely distracting…but right now it’s not keenly memorable either. (B-)

10. BRAVEST FACE: Definitely getting a hint or three of Lee’s My Favorite Headache here in the opening moments, which is good or bad depending on what you think of that album. As a fan, I think it’s a generally good nod. Like The Larger Bowl, the verses exist on a very simple acoustic melody and a Feedback inspired folksy simplicity. Things build towards a more layered and full chorus. Vocally this song is very Geddy up front, with zippo effects or layers. Very 1960s styled delivery. Lyrically the song is about how nothing is as expected, so you might as well make the best of the **** you’re in and give it all you’ve got. (I don’t write lyrics either). There’s a nice word run at the end about there being a susceptible child in every man, a vicious streak in the sweetest child, etc. Works well lyrically. Little bit of Victor going on in the tasty bluesy solo from Alex, as well as some great noodling and blues fills throughout. Yeah…the two solo albums meets retro-flavored Feedback here for sure. (B)

11. GOOD NEWS FIRST: I like this song and it’s probably the one presently growing on me the most. Swelling guitar intro into this driving riff and beat that tones down to a slow tempo verse. Alex’s guitar parts in the verse are very Victoresque, moody and playful. Nice. The chorus is great….”You used to feel that way….the saddest words you could ever say…..but I know you won’t remember that day…and the most beautiful words I could ever say.” Geddy’s voice and vocal melody sell me in this moment and in a great melodic bridge “I’m afraid enough for the both of us.” Really nice dynamics on this song. (A-)

12. MALIGNANT NARCISSISM: Geddy picks up a fretless bass for, presumably, the first time and slides and pops his way into the spotlight with this playful bit. It’s very groove oriented but has its moments, like Alex’s schizophrenic high chord work…but mostly this is Geddy and Neil’s spotlight, playing a humorous mini-homage to their YYZ trade off near the end of the tune. There’s also this cool and moody feedback-laden spoken part about ¾ of the way through, then we’re back in for the finale. It’s teeny tiny, but mighty just the same. Fun. Playful. (A-).

13. WE HOLD ON: Good album closer that has a steady and building beat and a nice schizoid Alex guitar flavorings under the verses. Ends the CD on a positive note, given the lyrical pessimism, pointing out that in history’s past we’ve been behind the bullseye and persevered. A really wild solo after the second verse accompanied by a galloping Peart beat marks a solid and true way to end this CD. (B+)

It was a lush, acoustic-laden album I never expected but was ultimately delighted with. Oh sure, the metal dork in me would like a few more crunchy riffs….and the 80s nerd in me wouldn’t mind keyboards merely acting as moods and accents. But the inner hippie (and eternal optimist) in me really liked the, at times, folksy direction here. As Bon Jovi once (ironically) opined, this left feels right. I’m quite certain that wasn’t the case with them on that misbegotten record, but in Rush’s case, it’s indeed true. Geddy sings, in We Hold On, “We could be down and gone, but we hold on.” That’s not only true for the present state of the world, but downright autobiographically accurate as well.

I think I posted a small review in the RUSH thread!

It took my about 3 listens for me to get into the album. I am going to see them a week from today in Charlotte. Count Dookie is going to see them this Staurday in Orlando/Tampa area.

Out of the 2 friends that I am going with nto the concert, one really digs the new album and the other is having a hard time getting into it. Like I said, after a couple of listens, I now enjoy it.

Threads merged...

I only think I have heard one or two songs off the new album... I really need to hear more of it.

I might try and catch their show here at the Hollywood Bowl, but I'm not sure as of yet.

Thanx for the merge!

If you get the chance, they are incredible to listen to in concert.

Yeah... I've seen them once or twice before... I remember seeing them at the Forum on the Presto tour I think... they are pretty tight in concert. And they are one of those bands that are about the music not the "show".
