Holy Crap, what a great game!
I'm not a game-head or anything, but this game is incredible. Really, you have to get it, or your life will be incomplete. Just ask Siamese Sith. His life is an empty shell because he doesn't have it yet.

He's right it's pretty cool. The head set feature is wild, you can hear other players on your side talking to each other, and you can talk to them also. I played a couple times and some of the people I heard on there had the thickest southern drawls ever! Then in another "hub" I heard two guys that were most likely from Brooklyn or Queens.....very funny stuff. The graphics are on par, but what really makes this game of foxes and hounds great is the human element! Are you the hunter or the hunted....

"Like shooting fish in a barrel"

I'm a pretty good first-person shooter, but this game has so many options, it takes a while to learn how to play. I'm discovering that there are usually a lot of people who suck as badly at the game as I do. We're the ones that get shot into hamburger meat by a single seal who was sent in to 'clean up the newbies.'
But sometimes I get my sh*t together, and take out a few of the opposing team's players. My best round so far was four people. And every now and then, there's a single player in the game thats... just ridiculously good. I've used my scope and managed to juuust barely see someone in the distance. Then my head explodes like a melon. There are some really good players out there. I did develop one fun tactic that allowed me (an unskilled newbie) to kill one of these talented people, and pulled it off just once.
A group of my fellow terrorists had been laid to waste; their corpses were now piled up on top of one another. They had foolishly decided to stay together as a group, and take the opposing team as a group. A single SEAL shot the 7 of them dead in a hail of gunfire, and they dropped down to the floor as a group.
I, on the other hand, realizing that my own feeble skills couldn't hope to keep me alive, just kept moving, hoping to not cross anyone's path. Unable to set my PS2 to declare my surrender, I fled like a gigantic sissy. I kept using my headset to try and find out who was still alive... and no one answered me. As my fear hit it's peak, I discovered the bodies of my teammates, in a gigantic pile. The game is clever because you can change your stance from 'stand', 'crouch' and 'prone'. So I decided to lay down amongst the bodies and wait.
Soon enough, a SEAL passed through my line of sight, like some great white shark rising up from the depths of the sea, to riddle me with bullets. There's actually no species of shark that uses firearms, but that's how I felt. The SEAL didn't realize I was there, confusing me with just another one of the bodies. I screwed up my courage, and fired some panicky bullets next time the SEAL passed by. He shot me in the shoulder, and killed me. But I killed him first, and he hit the floor a second or two before me, so technically, my team (the terrorists) won the round. Yay!
But the members of my team had voted me out of the game while they were waiting (and watching me) wait in a pile of bodies. Great game! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

This game sounds like a must have... I have broadband and everything, but how would you set it up? I read in a magazine that after you get the modem you have to plug in the ethernet cable into the network adaptor. Then they said to contact your broadband provider and tell them that your using a network adaptor or something like that... what did you guys do to set it up?
Darth Fabulous

It's easiest to just type in ipconfig/all into a DOS command window and copy down all the ip adresses and such, then manually input them when you are running the setup disk with the playstation. You don't have to call your provider or anything, at least I didn't.

The setup wasn't hard at all. If you have a cable modem, you can get SOCOM. The game itself is about $50, and the Internet Adapter for PS2 is about $30. There's no monthly fee or anything for playing the online version of SOCOM. It's free. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
You stick the adapter into the back of the PS2, and then connect the cable modem to it. I have Optimum Online, and I didn't have to tell them I was using SOCOM. One trick though, is that you have to remove power to the cable modem (pull out the plug) and then plug it back in, AFTER you've connected it to the PS2. So I had to run out and get an ethernet cable. I could have kept disconnecting and reconnecting from my computer and the PS2, but that was tiresome. So now I have two ethernet cables. When I want to play SOCOM, I disconnect the plug for the cable modem, then connect the 'other' ethernet cable (the one that's connected to the back of my PS2), and then plug the modem back into the wall. It seems that the modem needs to (I dunno) re-initialize or something. When I switch it back to my computer, I have to do the same thing. It only takes a minute.
As for my continuing misadventures on the SOCOM battlefield, I'm slowly getting a little bit better. I know there are tips and tricks out there, but none of the veteran players are sharing them. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sly.gif There are different controller configurations, which, I've discovered, make a helluva difference, once you realize it. So I'm experimenting with different setups.
So far, I've learned this about the game.
1. Always keep moving.
If someone spots you, and you don't see them, they could very easily walk up to you, and shoot you dead. A moving target is always harder to hit. If there are four opponents left, and just you - don't think of ambushing them, or waiting it out. Keep moving, and try to take them down in a spray of panicky bullets.
2. Don't shoot at someone the moment you see them.
Much like an over-eager groom, I used to shoot the moment I spotted my target. Usually, the distance at which I spot them is too far for me to accurately shoot. If you spot someone, wait and see if they have spotted you. If not... follow your target and get closer for a cleaner, surer kill. And they may lead you towards where the others are hiding out.
3. Using the 'Prone' stance.
I learned a new trick. I climb up onto a certain spot, and lay down prone. My gun is more stable, and I have a better shot at taking someone down. After firing, it's important to follow Tip #4!...
4. Stick and move!
If you fire at someone, and miss or hit, people probably know where you are. So make it harder for them. Run away. Take as circuitous a route as possible, and run back to where you shot someone. There's a good chance of running right up besides your opponent. Or running into them. You take yer chances!
5. I got chunks of guys like you in my stool!
Don't become frustrated when you think you're doing great, and then someone arrives who can bank grenades off walls and into the waistband of your pants. There's always someone better, and they always seem to show up. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I'm slowly getting better at the game, since I'm rarely the least productive person on my team, and I sometimes (when under great strain) shoot the dickens out of the other team. It usually happens when I've managed to not get killed immediately. I use my headset to ask who's still alive... to get only static. I shoot down three to four people, and I'm able to tamp down my total shock long enough to begin thinking that maybe I don't stink after all.
And then a grenade bounces off a wall and lands in my pants.
Oh, and by the way, I've created a SOCOM clan called 'The Galactic Senate' - if you want to join, PM me with your SOCOM handle. Try to pick a title that's the same as your name here on the GS. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Krogenar Learns How To Defend
Here are two more stories from SOCOM online.
Last night, my team of terrorists and I were out relaxing on a large freighter at sea, when we were alerted to the presence of several Navy Seals, who had apparently boarded our ship from the sea. My fellow mercenaries and I ran about madly and were quickly exploded into pieces as the SEALS stormed into our position.
Round 2.
This time I ran to the edge of the platform, vaulted over it, and ran into the tunnels inside the ship - just as the other terrorists (who still were running in circles) were shot dead. There, in the darkness, I was shot dead by a SEAL. Those dark grey wetsuits they wear make them hard to spot!
Round 3.
I told everyone on my team to follow me into the tunnels. One person instructed me on how to perform an obscene act on myself, and hoped I would break my neck in the attempt. The rest actually followed me! We split up, and defend both ends of the tunnel. Someone said, "Watch out for the grenades they're tossing! So we did. They tried storming into the tunnels, but we had lined the walls of the tunnel with claymores. So the small tunnel become a raging firestorm of exploding metal and they died. We won the round.
That was a fun game. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I tend to survive depending on how I play. Sometimes I'm gung ho, and just run and jump over railings (and I sometimes survive the landing) with my gun blazing away.
Oh! Good story...
I somehow was playing a terrorist again, in the 'Frostfire' board, and you can select what your 'player icon' looks like. There's really no choices for the SEALS, they all look pretty much the same. But for Frostfire, you can select Terrorist avatars that are wearing NEON YELLOW OUTFITS. So I chose one on a lark. It was hysterical. The SEALS are wearing dark grey wetsuits, so they can hide in shadows. The rest of my fellow terrorists are wearing grey/white camouflage.
Me?
Neon yellow.
But you know what? It was liberating, to be able to not worry about concealment. Everyone could see me... this bright yellow figure running across the ship. So I would run and shoot, and I did very well. Either people thought I must be so good, that I was ballsy enough to wear an outfit that makes me an easy target, or they underestimated me, thinking I was a total newbie. (Psst! I'm a newbie! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sly.gif)
But on that board, I did discover this one sniping tower that's also painted NEON YELLOW - the only one on the board. So for one round I tried hiding against it, hoping my neon yellow rain slicker would make me blend in. I was shot in the head. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eh.gif

I usually play on US East someplace. I usually try US East 7, and then successive rooms (8,9,10, etc.) until I find a room that has spaces for the 'Frostfire' or 'Desert Glory' scenarios.
The name of the clan is 'The Galactic Senate' - if you tell me what your player name is (Darth Fabulous would be great) - then I can send you an invitation.
... although both invitations I've sent to Javen have not been replied to yet. Weird. I did! I sent it to '{GS}Javen' ... without the ' ' marks.
Now, when I tried sending an invitation to '{GS} Javen' (notice the extra space) - it told me that that player did not exist. When I check under my clan menu, it lists both your player names as having been sent invitation, but lists them as 'undecided' ... so I don't know.
Check around in the menu system, I guess.
If it doesn't work, I'll disband the clan, and you recreate it, and try to send me an invitation. It'll work eventually. I don't know what real benefits we get from being 'clanned' - I'm hoping it will tell us if our clanmates are online, and if so, what room we're in. That would be a great.
Oh, and in other news, Siamese Sith will be creating a player for SOCOM, and he'll be joining the clan.

Note: THough you can hook up and play with many people, Australians may not be able to hook up to the East Coast of the US easily. Distance, even on a broadband, may hinder it's playability...plus the timezones are weird (Aussies being in the 'future' and all ). It's best, in certain cases, to go with the most local server, and then barring that, the most free server.

You know what I've noticed about some of the other players on SOCOM? Some of them have great names. I saw a player named "10-10-220", someone else named "th3w1z4Rd" (see if you can decode that one), and the funniest to date was a guy named, "DUFFMAN".
Yeah, when he spoke over the headset, he would speak as 'DuffMan" from The Simpsons. For example:
"DuffMan's been shot in the head ... OH YEAH!"
(it helps to imagine him doing a pelvic thrust and pointing at you with his fingers as little guns.)
Of course you have your run of the mill people, with names like "SupaPimpMassa" or "MahNigga" or "GeneralLee" And then there are the people who want to use their names to abuse you, even after they've killed you in the game. After being killed, the name of your killer and the weapon he used appear above your corpse, so you can stare at it. It look like this: "You were killed by DUFFMAN using a MP101."
So some wiseguys name themselves "yourself?" or "your mother." or even "your own stupidity"
And yet, people are constantly mispronouncing my user name (no big deal) or they are feel the need to harangue me about having such a weird name. *boggles*
Oh, and one other observation: sometimes the people playing this game are very young. Or they at least sound young - it sometimes pretty funny to take tactical direction from someone who sounds like Alvin the Chipmunk.
Alvin(in a very squeaky voice): "Krogenar, head east and attack their flank!"
Krogenar: "Er, uh, ... sure." (shot twice in the head and dies)

That's it... I gotta get an adapter this weekend. I've been playing, having lots of fun... just made it to the Congo now, where you have to destroy the munitions and prevent escape.... well, I decided to just have some fun and went ballistic. I just ran head on, turning and blowing baddies away right and left, then inadvertently blew up Jester when I blew up the comm tower, lost Specter while clearing the munitions sites, and was barely alive myself when we finally blew them up.
The level was complete and ended and I got...
UNSATISFACTORY!
I got every goal, my percentages were pretty high... but I guess the loss of life was unacceptable. I should be more careful.
So.... Anyone want me on their team? LOL
Actually, I'm much better when I'm cautious... and I'm hella good with a sniper rifle most times.
This game is so incredible. I haven't had this much fun since Max Payne... I can't wait to get online.
Still have room for me if I get the adapter this weekend?

Kop, you don't have to hold back. Feel free to tell the rest of the Senate that I was a downright masterful SOCOM player. The way I selflessly caught several grenades in my mouth, while jumping off a rooftop, or my ability to block bullets with my face. It's ok - don't hold back.

Ok, I think what we need to do is agree on a date that we four can meet on-line. We'll all get onto the GS, and PM each other, or post here. Then we'll all agree to meet at a specific briefing room. We'll create a game room of our own, with a password, and just play 2 on 2, to see how badly we play the game. It'll be a nice chance to practice.
So... what days are good for you guys?
Any time this week is good for me, after 6 pm EST.

We wondered what happened to ya... sorry about that...
I played a little one on one with Krogenar... or should I say he played a little one on one with me... LOL. We ended up with one draw... and then he got six wins and I got one win. He wasted me. A couple of times, I was SURE I got him... but somehow he lived through it... he's like a cat he is... nine lives...
Anyway, it was fun. It was MORE fun when we got into a Desert Glory game and had a chance to play together instead of against each other. When you got disconnected Dfab, we ended up two on three... but we took em a couple of times. It was a blast...
My favorite strategy (or lack thereof) on that level was setting up a Claymore on the balcony that entered into the prisoner's room. I'd then sit somewhere sniping until I saw one of the Seals step up onto the balcony to try to rescue the hostages and then BOOM! I'd detonate the claymore... Usually there was at least one or both of the other two Seals behind him, so I'd drop down and shoot at them. It worked about three times... they just didn't get it that there was a bomb there... they must have been thinking we were getting lucky with grenades or something... they kept walking right into the trap.
Anyway... I cannot express how immenslely fun this is. When I was first married. I was working at a place called Q-Zar with my wife who was the asst. mgr. It was a laser tag arena. Me and the crew there were the best there was at that game in Columbus and it was an absolute blast... I played CONSTANTLY. This game brings back that fun... because I'm way to out of shape to play Q-Zar at the same level I used to (and it's long gone)... this is more my speed now that I'm older LOL. Who knew I could work this hard in front of my television set?

Yep. The first few rounds it was 2 on 2 - and we dominated those guys. We shot them like rabid, mangy dogs, and my soul sang with joy as their bullet-riddled corpses flew festively into the air...
Then the third guy joined the other team, and my mojo evaporated on me. Luckily, koppy came through in the clutch several times, and saved our team's collective bacon. For the next three rounds, I managed to somehow swallow my own survival knife, and then lay down and let the SEALS shoot me. Luckily, this left kopernikuz to face three SEALS alone. Usually he killed two, and once I believe he killed all three. On one occassion, he followed my example - poor dope!
Then, in the last three rounds, my mojo returned and kop and I went apesh*t on them. We won the last three rounds, but it wasn't enough. It was a close match though. It should also be noted, that through this match, kop's headset was not worked, so we had to communicate enemy positions through a complicated series of hopping, shooting and dying. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Has either of you beaten the first level in single player where you are supposed to rescue a guy named pickle and get him out before the helicopter returns? I've been stuck on that thing for a couple of weeks now. I can usually set up the diversion about 50% of the time, but the helicopter almost always gets me. Once Boomer, God bless him, shot down the chopper and we started heading for the extraction point with the hostage. I round a corner without my night vision on, I really hate using night vision because I find it disorienting, and a terrorist beats me across the head with a rifle butt and game over. I have never gotten that far again. Is there something I'm doing wrong or do you guys have a strategy that worked for you?

Ahh... I'm still in the Congo... I keep liberating the POW's, but then when I go to do the caves, before I can get in there, it turns out I missed a guy somewhere who rounds about and kills one of the POW's. This last time, I got smart... I took the POW's down to the house at the bottom of the hill near the cave entrance and put them inside and told them to hold. Then I was going to have Jester and Spectre cover the area while Boomer and I went into the caves.
Well, on the way there, Jester goes and gets himself killed over the rise, I tell spectre to cover the house while I run to see who killed Jester and get killed myself by a guy hiding in some reeds. I wasn't very careful and just kind of ran out there because I was so frustrated.
So technically I've cleared the level up to the caves a few times now, but not actually made it into the caves.
By the way DFab, I joined your sports community today. Sent you a PM about my avatar though. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Thanks for joining. I left Jester and Spectre with the prisoners, went on ahead with Boomer and cleaned out the caves. Then I returned for the prisoners and men and completed the mission. When walking down those paths into the valleys on the way to the caves just lay down and snipe until the terrorists start returning fire, then run and shoot your way to the cave. If you stay well hidden most of the terrorists will run to see what happened to their commrades after you shoot them. Just pick them off one at a time.

So we are a 'go' tonight.
After we're all here on the GS, start posting to the SOCOM thread, and we'll meet on an agreed upon server - probably the slowest 'US East' server we can find (that is, whichever one has the fewest people on it). We'll be practicing, 2 on 2, after creating a password protected room. The password will be: yoda.

I finally beat that level! In the one I'm working on now you have to infiltrate a cave system and secure two nuclear weapons under terrorist control. Once you secure them HQ orders you to arm one to seal the cave! First time through I managed to arm the nukes, but on the way to the extraction point I got whacked be a terrorist. This game is too much fun!

You should try to beat the game, it's fun and really challenging. There are too many night missions though and I hate using the night vision goggles.
kopernikuz
02-20-2003, 05:15 PM
The goggles do make it difficult... I play those levels at night with the lights out and I can see the screen a bit better. The goggles make your vision great... but your peripheral is GONE. Anyway... I may try to beat that POW camp level tonight before we get together online.
(looks at his watch, shakes it, taps, it and nods then remembers he'd better pick up a pizza for the kids on the way home from work since mom is going to be out. Then the games begin...)
My eight year old son has decided he wants to be a Navy Seal. I told him he just wants to because the game is cool. He said, no... he wants to defend America... (tear in corner of eye)... that's my boy. I let him watch a documentary on Discovery Channel about Seal Training, and he was wide-eyed. He was a little put off about the underwater holding your breath thing... specifically because at eight, he still doesn't like doing that in the pool. The show depicted what these guys go through, and people quitting every day... it was rough... but when it was over, I looked at him and said. What do you think? He said... "It looks hard... but I still want to try it."
ATTA BOY!!! I'd be proud, but scared as hell, no doubt. I wouldn't be disappointed at all if he changes his mind... LOL... neither would my wife! She's worried. I said... he's eight... he'll want to be an astronaut six times, a fire fighter eleven, a skateboarder, soccer player, etc... When he's eighteen and says he wants to be a Seal, we can worry. But he's a good kid, he'll do something great, I'm sure... and if he serves his country... I'll proudly support him.
Darth Fabulous

What are your weapons of choice for online play?
If you're a SEAL, use a silenced weapon whenever possible: I prefer the MPA1-something or other, with the SN at the end, signifying it's silenced. Literally, if someone is firing at you with that weapon, it registers as a small *tink*tink* - and it has good range, so at a distance you can peck at someone and duck for cover if you miss, and stand a chance of not being discovered immediately. Nothing is galling as shooting at someone's back, missing, only to have them turn around and shoot you in one shot.
For the terrorist team I stick to either the AKS, or the 552. The 552 is becoming my weapon of choice. It's so noisy, it can actually freak someone out if you attack them unexpectedly. Good range, fast firing rate, and accurate. But, if you're a terrorist and you kill a SEAL, take their weapon if it's silenced - but check if it has ammo! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif The clicking sound an empty weapon makes is pretty funny!
Darth Fabulous

I like the M4A1 SD too, I also like the SR25 SD sniper rifle, it's not as accurate as the larger caliber sniper rifles, but it is much quieter. You guys are the terrorists most of the time right? Any reason for that?
kopernikuz
02-21-2003, 04:04 PM
I like the MA41SD too... Anything I can look down the scope of.
I felt helpless last night... I didn't do nearly as well as I would have liked. To be honest, it's much easier as a larger team than as two. I am not a very good run-and-gun type of player... I have a hard time aiming while I'm moving. I am more successful being more calculated and methodical. Sniping and running. Using explosives. When I run into someone head on... I have a hard time taking them down in close combat.
At least I recognize where my weaknesses are. That way I can try better to capitalize on my strengths. But I must say, it's much more fun working as a team than one on one.
And I can't believe you or Javen haven't mentioned Javen's magic bullet! LOL
And it was much easier with the headset. I rented the game from a store so that I could get the headset temporarily. I sent mine to Sony today to be replaced. Here's hoping it gets back soon! I can't afford to rent a headset too many times... I may as well by a new one after one more week style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif But they said 7-10 days from the day they receive it, and I can track it on their system online.
Anyway, a lot of fun guys! Javen, Krog, you are both an asset to the team, no doubt. I don't think I could have faired alone like you guys did. I'm still quite green.
Javen

The guns I use vary from map to map and depending on if I am a Terrorist or a Seal. So I will make a list here on my game play.
BloodLake-Terrorist=Sniper Rifle and Desert Eagle handgun. Seal-Sniper Rifle and 226 handgun. The reason is its a large map.
Desert Glory-Terrorist AKS 74/grenade and I switch off with sniper/handgun. Seal M4A1/Grenade
Frostfire-Terroist 552/grenade sometimes a Desert Eagle handgun or F90.Seal anything with the most ammo. Close combat is the reason.
Abandoned-Terrorist AKS-74/grenade. Seal M4A1/grenade small map
Death Trap-Terroist everything even claymores. Seal M4A1 SD. You have plenty of time to set up things in this map especially as a Terrorist.
Rats Nest-the same as Frost fire anything with lots of ammo.
well thats it on that.
It takes a little time Kop but you will get better and get the hang of it more.Learn to aim always for the head it is a quicker kill thas why I am decent, but not great cause I practice doing that with any gun even a handgun. But last night was fun had a good practice.

Krogenar
02-24-2003, 09:15 AM
We kicked some serious tookus.
Here's what did it for me... my biggest problem is that I get so excited while playing (I know, I could have worded that better) that I inadvertently switch my firing mode from automatic, to single shot. A lot of people apparently have this problem.
So, I get in a close quarters firefight (I don't even know how this happens! I'm very cautious and slow when playing, ask Javen!) and in the excitement I switch to single shot. So while the wall behind me is being shredded by enemy bullets, I'm firing one shot every 5 seconds.
My solution: use a "machine" gun. For the SEAL team, it's the M63A, I think it's called. It has 75/75 clips. Use the double ammo equipment, however, you will need it. It has only ONE firing speed: automatic. So that got rid of my problem, and almost immediately I started getting MVP once in a while. It also fits my playing strategy: slow and steady.
The terrorist team has an equivalent gun, but I haven't experimented with it much yet. So, if anyone's having the 'firing mode' problem, give this type of gun a try.
kopernikuz
02-24-2003, 09:38 AM

We had some good rounds today. Javen, Kopernikuz, and I played on the Desert Glory map today, The first few rounds I was a terrorist and Kop and Javen were Seals since we joined after the game had started. I had killed Kopernikuz the other day in Desert Glory, and today he returned the favor. Kopernikuz was MVP once, I was one kill behind him. Did you get booted after that second time through Kop? We were on the Seals team and pretty well dominated the terrorists for many rounds until the last time through. The terrorists picked up some better players, I think one was cheating, and we ended up down 5 games to 4. I killed two that round and was the last Seal alive. I got two shots in what I think was the last terrorist, but he finished me off first. Still, it was a fun game, the most I have played online so far.

02-28-2003, 11:13 AM
Well, we played all 4 of us at once the other night, and it went pretty well I think. We're all good players, and we all have our own ways of playing.
I think my weakness is that I don't vary my tactics. Last night, when I was on the SEAL team, and Javen was on the terrorists team, I swear, he must have told them, "Krogenar likes to run in from the left. He'll run right up that ramp, and then drop down into us. He won't stop firing his gun that entire time."
I did exactly that, on the first round, and it felt like they knew what I was planning (if you can call it planning.) So... I'm trying to get myself to do something different each round. It serves me right to get shot to pieces. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
How do you guys think we're doing, as a team? I know we still haven't been able to play with all four of us on the same team yet, but I think we're doing pretty well! The next time we meet, we need to make a room called "www.galacticsenate.com VS anyone" and we need to wear some sort of tag next to our names. I'm guilty of not wearing my tag. I guess I wanted to wait until we were better at the game, before wearing a tag. I figured if people see that you're in a clan, they assume you have some skill. :look:
So what should our tag be?
{GS}
{<=GS=>}
Senator (name)
The Honorable (name)
galacticsenate.com (name)
I was considering putting the web addy in there, to attract more Star Wars fans to the GS, to give something back. And then in that way, the GS could be a way to attract potential new clan members. What do you guys think?

Our tag should be something unique, I alreaday know a clan that is Star Wars.Galactic Senate.com is too long of a name. But when we make the room name we could call it www.GalacticSenate.com though, that is a good idea.
BUt we also need at least 4 more people to join we should start going in newbie rooms and play find and ask the best people to join with us.

They look like x-wing and tie fighter
But I'm partial to something simple like:

<GS>

I think I like =GS= the best...

We could start creating 8 player rooms until we get more team members... 4 on 4 matches. Then invite good players from the other team to join if they aren't already on a clan.

galacticesenate.com clan tryouts - that would be a good title.
Nobody liked the tag idea of:
Senator Krogenar
Senator Javen
Senator Kopernikus
Senator Darth Fabulous
???
I think that might be cool! ... if it fits.
Also, there's a clan that uses {GS} for its tag. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Guys is there any multiplayer maps that are a little more junglish? I'm not a run-and-shoot type of player, I more of a slow-moving sniper that uses terrain and plants for cover. Desert Glory is a little to open for my likes.

Yeah, those are kind of fun... I've just been trying to master one at a time. I feel pretty confident with Desert Glory now. I feel like I've found my good spots, know my exposed areas there... etc... I'm ready to move to a new one.
Whichever one of those is the hostage one is the one we should do first... one of them is a demolition one, and I think we should stick with what we know for now... and have hostages be the goal... then start looking at demolition ones.

How do you guys think we're doing? I think we're doing pretty well. Javen and I played together for a bit this weekend, and... well, our mojo had dried up. We were both getting shot to pieces - and in areas that we knew pretty well! Just a bad day I guess.
But in general, I think we've all improved. Now we need more players. The clan maximum is set at 16. That means we need 12 more players from the GS! Anyone out there who plays? Yoo hoo! Anyone?
Oh, I discovered a tip. You know how sometimes after the final totals, if you go into the ARMORY you get kicked off the network? I found a work around. Right before you go into the ARMORY, open the PS2's disc tray, then go into the ARMORY, choose what you need and return to the lobby. Then close the tray. I've tried this about 6 times, and I've never been booted.

Wow, great tip, Krog!
I played a little last night as Black Manta... lol... did okay.
Javen and I played some this weekend as well... Javen, how about that Blood Lake level? We were doing pretty well hiding back to back in some brush in the water and picking guys off as they went by... I was cracking up!
By the way... Krog... when we were playing against you the other night, my son is so excited that he killed you! He can't stop talking about it. "I can't believe I killed Krogenar... and he's good!" He considers you quite the player... so take it as a compliment. If he'd kept playing he'd probably get killed 99 times out of a hundred... but that one kill made his day. It was the one where you were in the terrorist building next to the hostage one and he was in the middle building... you noticed each other about the same time, but he let lose and got the kill. That's my boy. LOL Even my wife was proud... lol!
Anywho... too fun! I have to work tonight. And I can't miss another episode of 24 tomorrow. I probably won't be on until Thursday. Besides, the headset I rented was broken, only the mic worked. I hope mine comes back from Sony soon.
I rented Ghost Recon over the weekend... not only is there no Online capability, but this game sucks hard! I guess I'm spoiled by Socom. How in the hell was Ghost Recon voted best game of the year? It's bloody awful!

Like yesterday when I was in Blood Lake, it was apparent that I was the last guy left versus probably one of the other team. I finally climbed to the top of a sniper tower and started looking around... it was one without a wall on every side. When I saw some movement in the fog below, I walked too close to the edge to start firing and fell to my death. Duh. Nothing more humiliating when the screen says "You committed suicide..." or worse "You were killed by kopernikuz with M67" and YOU are kopernikuz... thanks Socom... rub it in.

Javen and I had the same thing happen to us. I asked him over the headset: "Are these guys really good, or are we playing like crap?" We both agreed that the opponents weren't outclassing us, we were just lacking mojo. When Javen siad it, it was a lot funnier, because he has a sort of southern drawl.
Javen: "Naw... these guys suck. We're jus' playin' like crap."
Javen had someone crawl up behind him and give him a 1-shot head shot, and I was struck by about 2 grenades and 1 claymore, all at once. I think the screen swung around so much I almost became dizzy. I was a flying, flaming corpse. It was a stupid way for me to die because I ran at a group of terrorists, my machine gun blazing away.
Now, if they were newbies, they might have thought, "Holy crap! Run!" But by the 3rd time I used this tactic, they must have thought, "Here comes Krog again...fall back, and detonate the claymores..." [my smoking corpse hits the floor] "Okay, back at it."
[game continues without me]

I used to do that all the time. I still do, on occassion. I'm not really the sniping type. I have been voted out of games many times, however. That's a rotten feeling. Once I received one vote short of kicking me out, so I camped, with claymores all around me, in a dark corner. I'm sure that's a metaphor for something, but anyway, when the last enemy rounded the corner, I blew us both up and I left the game - I was feeling vindictive I guess. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Same here. I still wish I were a better sniper. It seems like a cool way to play. I played against a team last night - and they were ALL SNIPERS. That was annoying. Getting killed by someone with a handgun is humiliating.

Hey guys, that was a blast by the way. I was interested in both RetoM7 and Bauer, CTU... I've pursued negotiations, but have not gotten responses yet. I'll keep you updated. If they're interested, we'll invite them back and put them through some paces... with one of us on their team to monitor communication and get feedback.
I ended up getting booted, and when I came back, someone had locked the room. Whoever became host after Krog left and came back must have done it, and they probably did it accidentally... but I kept trying and it was locked.
I eventually just went and played somewhere else, checking back occassionally and then the room was gone.
Who did you think was cheating, Dfab? I didn't get the impression from anyone.
Speaking of cheating... the other morning when I was playing in DG, there was this huge skyblue void on the canyon wall right next to the hostage building. Since I tend to hug the wall aiming outwards when I run through that area, I ended up in a blue area looking back on the DG... I continued and actually ended up UNDER the hostage building, watching my partner run through the rooms above me. I continued a bit further and I was under the ground, going around the NE part of the map. It was bizarre. I ran back to the place where the void was and came right back out onto the regular map again. It was very strange. I'm sure it was a glitch, and I only explored it... I didn't exploit it, (meaning I never saw or fired upon the enemy)... but it was wierd to say the least.
Have any of you guys ever experienced a glitch?

There were 2 people that looked good. I think we played well, but I was suffering from some minor mojo slippage. And the DG level ... oh boy! There was so much lag, I had people fire ONE SHOT at me, and I dropped - every time.
That ain't normal. It was like they fired 10 shots - and then I was able to react. Also, all four of us were online, but not everyone's headset was working. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I did in single player once, I exploited the hell out of it and still ended up being killed.
Anyway, I can't remember the guys name but he killed me like 5 times in desert glory. Twice he shot me but no one was around. I could see the tracer rounds originating from directly in front of me, but no terrorist. Another time I snuck up behind him and put about 4 rounds into the back of his head, he didn't die, or even stagger, and turned around and blew me away. The other two times I shot him maybe ten times each on the run, mostly torso and head shots, and he was never even phased. Another time I threw a grenade where he was and was quickly shot by one of his teammates, but when I was dying I saw the explosion. He was right next to the grenade, but it didn't even knock him down.

Ok, fellas, we've played together now a few times, and I think we're all pretty good players by this point. What we need to do now, I think, is develop some game plans. The most common one I've seen to date is the "sniper/guard" combination.
Someone is designated as the sniper in a two man team, and one to two others defend that sniper from the ground, sharing intel, etc. That's what I think we should do next: train as two man teams, with one person as the sniper.
That having been said: I'm not going to be the sniper.
I become engulfed in a maddening blood lust that probably will not keep my trigger finger steady. I prefer to run howling like a madman at the enemy - which either works very well, or fails tremendously. So one of your guys has to be the sniper.
I would choose Javen or DFab as the potential snipers. Javen sniped me with a handgun once, so I think he'd make a better sniper than me. I'm just not patient enough. Kopernikuz is (I think - correct me if you disagree) better at moving on the ground than camping and sniping.
So imagine DFab or Javen in a building, with one or two people guarding him, and one more person acting as a scout - trying to find the enemy and report to the group.
What do the rest of you guys think?

Honestly, I've always said... my weakest point is the run and gun. I'm more calculating and tend to attack best with grenades and sniping. But I'm not some kind of ace sniper either... I need practice.

Well, I don't want to be a sniper - and I don't think I'd make a good one either. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif So whoever wants to give it a go, next time we'll pair up, and I'll resist the urge to run to my death. The three of you guys could take turns practicing, with the remaining three people (including me) could act as protection.

I love to snipe, I'm pretty good at it single player, but I have trouble finding good enough cover to fire from in the multiplayer maps. Perhaps we could get on and create a room for just the four of us, pair off, one sniper per team and have a cease-fire for the first two rounds and just explore the maps for good shooting points.

I had a strategic thought. What if we were to get the sniper set up, then have the other member of the pair, let's call him the attacker for brevity, set up claymores in various locations in the snipers field of view. The attacker returns to the snipers general area, covering his back and the sniper acts as a spotter telling the attacker when to detonate the claymores. I think this would work fairly well against a hard full frontal attack as well as a slow calculated attack.
BTW, I noticed that you guys usually carry the M63E, which is good for close range attacks. kopernikuz, if you like to sit back and snipe from time to time, but feel more comfortable with an automatic weapon, you might give the M4A1 SD a try. It has a 3 power scope and the supressor helps conceal your location. The fire rate is really quite good and has an effective round and stays very stable when fired, very low muzzle climb. It's my weapon of choice almost everytime I play.

Sorry guys about the other night, someone came over right before I started playing and I didn't want to be rude.
Also I am decent with sniping, but it depends on map.

I use the M63A when I run and gun. When I am unsure what will be necessary I carry the Ma41Sd

Well guys what did you think of our sniping abilities?
kopernikuz
03-27-2003, 01:57 PM
I thought it went really well. In the very first match, Javen and I vs. Krogenar... I picked Krogenar off of a tower. That was fun. Then I picked him off from behind as he tried to get a bomb into our building in Blizzard and he did a neat backflip kind of thing. Then I picked him off again as he was trying to defuse the bomb Javen had placed in his building. In fact, there were several times I picked off Krogenar. Anytime I can get the jump on Krogenar, I feel good. Don't know why that is... probably because when I face him one on one in a run and gun, he wastes me... LOL
Anyway... I think the best part of last night was the communication... Javen and I succeeded at the times we did because we were talking. I think as a team, we need to strategize more (like we did last night... even when that strategy meant hiding with the bomb in an outhouse) and communicate. I felt more at ease moving around when I knew Javen had me covered... or when he was communicating the movement of you guys when I was trying to come up behind (Blood Lake).
All in all, it was fun... slow with only four of us on those big maps like Blood Lake... but a lot of fun nonetheless.

Hey now, credit where credit was do, hiding the bomb in the outhouse was my idea. Well at least hiding the bomb was my idea, the outhouse part was all Krogenar. You guys seemed to play defense more than we did, letting us get the bomb and making us come to you. I like how Krogenar and I were able to attack from two directions, gathering recon on your possible positions before moving in. Then you guys started using explosives, a good defensive tactic. My favorite moment was in Desert Glory when I was looking down my scope and saw Javen looking at me through his. I pulled the trigger, but he must have pulled his a split second before me because I was dead and my gun never fired.

Good points... all in all... we learned some neat and valuable strategies that we can now implement as a team. I tend to be more defensive anyway... I like sniping, using grenades, and claymores more than just running into a situation. I've watched Krogenar and yourself doing that from time to time with great success... you're for the most part accurate and fast at the same time. I am only accurate when I relax and can concentrate...
case in point... you and I doing ring around the rosies... me with a Model 18 and you with a sniper gun... although I feel as though I hit you plenty enough to have killed you... but you got one shot that ended the runaround. I still say I was robbed style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif ... but my point is that most times I am unsuccessful at that, but have found great success placing grenades, claymores, and sniping from hidden areas. I guess that would be my strongest area.
In Blood Lake, after Krog and Javen were gone and it was just you and me... I was quite a ways behind you, you were laying on your stomach looking the other way. I trained my sight on you, fired twice and apparently missed! I should have gotten closer. I could have walked right up on you, but I didn't... it was one of the many draws last night. I was like "Come on! Die already!" Apparently you at least heard or felt the bullets because after I snuck over there you were gone. That was a tough level for four people. It's massive.

You know, it's funny, but Fab and I were doing a lot of talking. And we were sort of 'profiling' you and Javen. I was telling Fab, "Javen loves to snipe. He'll just sit and wait - he's patient." And Fab and I had a pretty good system worked out. I'd run like mad for the bomb, leaping off the cliff within the first 10 seconds of the round (thanks for that tip earlier Javen, it really helped. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif ) and he would scout the area I was running through, and giving me cover.
Then we'd decide which direction to move the bomb, and meet up. Oh, and Fab came up with an excellent plan for winning the match. We just waited out the last 2 rounds. Very clever. I knew that the first round we did it that you and Javen would just wait for us. And we never arrived! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
By the second round, I was wondering, "Javen's figured it out by now - he realizes it." Small comfort to a SEAL in an outhouse with a bomb on his back, though.

I suck at Blood Lake. I know most of the hiding places, and whatnot, but - let me rephrase: "Javen is really good at BloodLake." I did get Javen once while he was waiting to snipe someone. I snuck right up behind him at least once on BloodLake, and once someplace else. But he sniped me... Oo... several times.

Yeah, it was too big and the mist makes me mad, it blurs your vision. I'm something in between you two and Krogenar. I like a slow, informed attack. I move from position to position seeing what I can see and shooting when I have a clean shot. I'm an attacking sniper, or something like that. Krogenar is the most aggresive of the four of us, and rightfully so, he can take out any one of us on the run more often than not.

There was a moment I observed when I was a ghost, in which you (Fab) were on the building to the right of the SEAL spawn, and you and Javen (I think it was him) were sniping at each other, both while under cover.
You peeked out from behind a wall, and nailed him! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I think it's safe to say that each of our levels of ability play off one another nicely... now we need to find ways to combine it in a match. All in all... I think we make a pretty good team...

Yeah that was pretty cool, I got good at shots like that from single player in the POW Camp level. I always use a sniper rifle and take out the sentry by peering around a corner and blowing his head off with my M87 ELR.

Shock and Awe, baby, Shock and Awe.
Javen: "I'm shocked! He just ran right into our gunfire!"
Kopernikuz: "That was awesome, the way his body sort of danced, and then fell into a bloody heap..."
I prefer to take the initiative and press the attack, while the other team is still formulating a plan.

We really did work very well together. The best overall coordinated attack of the evening (in my opinion) was in Blizzard. Javen was dead, and it was just Kopernikuz in the terrorist base. I had the bomb, and Fab and I got into the ground floor of their base.
There are two stairways going up into the terrorist base (and up to the second floor, where Kop was waiting). Fab and I decided we'd both run up the stairs - he'd go up one set of steps, and I'd go up the other set. That way, Kop would be facing attack from two directions. It worked.
