ESB: Vader told Luke that together they will rule the galaxy as father and son and overthrow the emperor.

ROTJ: Luke almost strike down the emperor, Vader stop him.

Did Vader said that in ESB just to convince Luke to turn to the dark side?

I recall reading (and I might be wrong as it was a while ago)
in the ROTJ novel that Vader thought that the time wasn't right for them to destroy the Emperor and take over as father and son and Luke wasn't ready for that yet.

But will have to check on that for the correct wording.

Well, see in ESB, it was just Luke and Vader, no Emperor to influence Luke. With the Emperor there, Vader was at his mercy. He didn't speak that much because the Emperor was going to do all the work, and Vader knew that it would end up Luke vs. Him.

Either way, there are many things in the OT that are inconsistant and there are many that will deny it.Even so I still like the OT and PT anyway.

But, I'll be the first to admit (on this board) that TPM was a letdown. It had no substance and lacked any really good characters, minus Maul.

That's true, I almost collapsed when I saw this Jar Jar Binks character. It only occurred to me later that hewas supposed to replace C-3PO as a talkative character.
There will always be inconsistencies as far as the storyline is concerned because there are always new developments and new story threads being evolved. At least, it gives us fans something to discuss!

Jar Jar is a big mistake. He is responsible for the fall of the Republic. Who propose giving Palpatine emergency powers? Jar Jar!!

Back to the topic... any other arguments about why vader said that? Mann have a point.

"He will join us or die"

"With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy."
- vader, esb

I'd say it started as just a line to get Luke interested, appealing to he 'peace luvin' nature, even the Anakin in Vader may have been coming out. But when Luke didn't respond:

"You can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and we can rule the galaxy as father and son. "
- vader, esb

he tried a different tactic, revealing something personal and betraying the emperor at the same time touching on Luke's potential lust for power, while hedging his bets against the Emperor's eventual end.

the tactic (obviously) didn't work so by roj:

"You don't know the power of the dark side, I must obey my master"

"It is too late for me, my son. The Emperor will show you the true nature of the Force. He is your master now."
- vader, roj

there's no scheming, the Emperor has complete control over Vader, who naturally does not want to see him wasted.

Interesting points JediBendu.

Btw, you can make a sig like mine at http://www.flamingtext.com. You have to host the image somewhere though... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
