THis show is so damn funny! I love it and the Simpsons so much. I have the first two seasons of Family Guy and the second season of the Simpsons. This show was too good to be cancelled and the fact that it was is too bad. Although some elements seem borrowed from elswhere (Peter-Homer, Brian-Dogbert???) it still is highly original in it's jokes. And the many relations to culture, past, present and future are great!

I love Family Guy!!!
Anyone who knows me knows this. I've enjoyed the show since its debut back in 1999. I was heartbroken when FOX cancelled it, and then brought it back only to cancel it again. Lucky for us the DVDs sold well! Which isn't surprising, considering how great this show really is! Now we're finally looking at some new episodes on the horizon. FOX has taken the show back in (because it only saw the dollar signs, but that's another topic), and new shows are rumored to begin airing in May.
Whoever enjoys this series post here! Who's your favorite character? Episode? Should the new episodes have to gone to Cartoon Network? Do you think the FCC is gonna be conservative with this one now?

Where'd you hear about that? As far as I'm concerned, as long as Lois' voice remains the same...I'm fine with the voice acting. Meg's voice has changed once already, and she isn't a big character anyway.

my fave part of family guy was the episode involving the year 2000
the entire first act was peter remembering a fight he had with a man-sized chicken, and the fight goes through the city destroying buildings and such
that's soemthing you don't see everyday!
Thomaz
01-29-2005, 03:28 PM
Family Guy has also many Star Wars imitations... Example, the baby once were Darth Vader, I remember... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel.gif
Kapit
01-29-2005, 03:32 PM
there was a time when stewie made an xwing-like ship, shrunk himself, and went inside peter to try and destroy all his sperm so stewie could remain the baby (or something)
the entire fight inside of peter was based off the yavin battle, and stewie was flying around blowing up sperm, it was funny

Indeed...Family Guy has had many a funny moment. My favorite episode is when the family has to move down south because Chris is being protected by the federal government. Peter gets attacked by raccoons and an old pedophile keeps trying to get Chris to have some "popcicles" in his basement. Classic Family Guy!

the difference between the simpsons and family guy is that FG is a show of very simple humor, most of it crude or stupid, targeted at an audience of mainly teenagers
whereas the simpsons has always been a family show with a moral center, and it's also one HUGE satire of american culture and society
hence the stereotypical characters like apu, willy, the bumblebee man, etc.
Thomaz
01-29-2005, 05:15 PM
FG has some highlights what is worth to see, but Simpsons IMO, has MANY... All the episodes...

I won't lie to you that they are both different shows. But the Simpsons ran out of steam years ago, I think they're staying alive by hardcore fan boys who think it's the greatest show ever. The new Halloween epis. wasn't even funny. I went through it just waiting and waiting to laugh.

You mustn't forget that Family Guy also uses shock humor too. In my opinion, Family Guy is better than the Simpsons. I agree with Super Milk that the Simpsons ran out of steam years ago, I can't even remember the last time I watched it.

I've watched the DVDs and I'm still a fan of Simpsons moreso. Family Guy is a rip off but its still somewhat funny
Super_Milk_Chan
01-31-2005, 07:41 PM
Family Guy is not a Rip Off at all. First thing that would make it look like a rip-off Is the stereotypical fat husband and the skinny wife. But it's not like that's been used before. The Flinstones have used that before the Simpsons, and many of the Simpsons jokes are formulaic to cartoons of the past. Family Guy's joke, although some may be crude, differ themselves from the rest of the pack. If anything King of the Hill is more of a rip-off. Although Hank isn't stupid, just a bit arrogant.

Listen to the commentaries on the Simpsons DVDs and they quote scene after scene and joke after joke about what Family Guy stole. But they too love the show and think its funny but not as good. To start, one of the biggest rip offs is the flash back scenes that family guy bases it show on
Kapit
01-31-2005, 10:23 PM
suffice to say that most any TV show is a rip-off of another......
Dani_Maul
01-31-2005, 10:52 PM
Family Guy is by no means a rip off of the Simpsons. The characters may be your stereotypical TV sitcom family, but the humor and themes of the show are totally different. As many know, Simpsons is more political based humor, using current events and politics as major drawing points. Family Guy uses the characters for its jokes. But like I said, this thread is about Family Guy, not about comparing Simpsons to Family Guy...if you wanna do that, make a thread comparing the two...but please, try to keep things focused on Family Guy and not the Simpsons.
Kapit
01-31-2005, 10:59 PM
staying on topic, what i said is the truth, any TV show about a family in humorous situations is basically a rip-off of the one before it, regardless the humor involved, the basic concept is the exact same, though you raise some points about the humor of the simpsons which are incorrect, but i'll not say anything.......for now style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Yes... mentioned it in the 'last flick' thread the other week.... I was pretty underwhelmed by it, but I'm not a big fan of the show. It had a few good moments, but suffered from being way too long. There were a couple Star Wars jokes, so a lot of folks here will appreciate it for that... but for me the laugh-out-loud moments were few and far between.
Give me Aqua Teen Hunger Force any day of the week instead of Family Guy... "I just can't put my meat on it..."

The fat son (Chris I think his name is haven't seen the show in a while.) becomes a freshman and gets paddled because of it and made fun of. Meg is in college. Chris get's sad and lives with Native people and get's married. No one including Stewie and Brian like Megan. Megan follows the family to retrieve Chris. The natives find out Chris is a freshman and chase them off the island. They fly away in a biplane and realise they forgot Meg. They look down and see Meg really stiff. She falls into the water and a bunch of bloody spears are sticking from her back. That's only a brief summary, I left out a lot but that's the main thing.

The general lack of trying to write a real joke has turned me away from this show.

Lazy writing that the Simpsons have fallen victim to as well. I had assumed the Simpsons started doing it because Family guy was doing it. But I usually get a laugh from Family Guy's attempt.

I don't watch Family Guy either but I DVR'd it last night for obvious reasons. I watched the Robot Chicken one and, all I can say is, The Family Guy episode was way better. I thought the RC one was pretty dumb.
I loved all the "Reds" checking in (Redd Fox, Red Buttons, Big Red, Simply Red, etc). The cameo by the Griswolds was great. Loved the parody of the "roll 'em up" scene from Vacation. Also, who knew that TIE-Fighter was really spelled Thai-Fighter? LOL.
"Great kid. Don't get peni$y." LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was suprised when I did not see a thread on this in here. Anyways, did anyone watch? I like Family Guy, but I'm not a weekly viewer or anything. But I did VERY MUCH enjoy the special. They should make an episode for every . . . episode.:happydance:

I have to agree. As much as I loved the Robot Chicken special, this one was barely funnier, but still so.
"Aren't you a little fat to be a stormtrooper?"
"Well, stay here and rot, you stuck up b*tch."
"Wait, who are you?"
"I'm Luke Skywalker. Me and Han Solo and Obi-Wan are here to rescue you. "
"Wait, Obi-Wan Kenobi!?"
"Yeah. Suddenly I'm not so fat, huh."
That is THE FUNNIEST thing I've ever heard.
"Master Luke! He's gone, he's gone!"
"What!?"
"Artoo. He took off in the middle of the night. We've gotta find him."
"Oh, what the Phantom Menace is that guy's problem!"
"Hey, mind if I turn on the radio?"
"WTAT, Tatooine's All-Talk Radio."
"My good friends, the liberal galactic media is at it again. They never stop. Now they're trying to convince us that Hoth is melting! Well, that's crazy; just trying to scare us. And if that wasn't enough to get you mad, we now have news that Lando Calrissian has been made the Chief Administrator of the Bespin Mining Facility. Gee, I wonder how he got that job. Well let me tell you how he got that job. Affirmitive Action Strikes Again. Time is 8:50."
"Oh, boy, great idea, Princess. Divin' into a pile of garbage. Hey, when we get out of here, maybe you can show me around your home planet of Alderann. Aww, too soon?"
"I can't believe he's gone."
"I know Luke, but its true. He's gone. I mean, you saw him get beheaded. Nobody lives through that. Well, not for long, anyways. I mean sometimes the brain is still active for a few minutes after the beheadin' but, to be honest, I can't imagine a worse kind of hell. And unfortunately, hell is probably where he'll end up because the Christians don't look to kindly on the whole Force thing."
"I got em, I got em!"
"Great kid, don't get peni$y."
"They're coming to fast!"
"Nickel for every time I've had that problem."<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
And the Bush Cheyney bumper sticker!!!
I think the problem that people had with the episode comes mostly from bigger Family Guy fans. From what I can tell, most fans think that the series is getting less funny as time goes by.

I've spent a long time trying to figure out the words to perfectly suit my feelings towards this special episode of Family Guy. Words like lame and unfunny and Robot Chicken already did it better came to mind. But in the end, I settled on: Tired.
Family Guy is tired. There is nothing new about it anymore. They're even using their own jokes over. How many of you who have seen the movie can honestly say that they laughed at the reuse of the "Guy that Sells the Things With the Wacky Arms" bit? Or how bout Cleveland-D2 carrying around a bag of pot, or firing a gun sideways out a window? HAHA! A black guy with drugs and a gun, that's just so original and hilarious! Stereotypes can be very funny, but not when the stereotype has been done zillions of times before
Robot Chicken did do it better. Much, much better.
As a side note, the season premiere of The Simpsons wasn't funny either, save for teh opening bit through the town.

Wow, it looks like some of us will have to agree to disagree on this stuff. I loved the "Hold for Papa Palpatine" skit on Robot Chicken, and so I was jazzed when I heard they were doing a special. I Tivo'd it and watched it twice...the second time to see if I missed anything...and I gotta say...nothing in the RC special approached the genius of that first skit...
The Family Guy spoof, on the other had, was "freakin hilarious" throughout. Even when they went a bit over the line with the creepy old guy as Obi-Wan, it was still fall down funny...
I've only seen it once so far, so I won't remember everything, but they managed to spoof Star Wars, Airplane, Doctor Who, Dirty Dancing, Bush/Cheney, Sanford and Son, Red Buttons, Simply Red, Vacation, Deal or No Deal, Magic Johnson infomercials, Tupac and Rush Limbaugh.
Mmmm, that's good pop-culture/satire...Glad I Tivo'd it...hoping they spoof Empire and Jedi at some point in the future...

I don't watch the show in the first place, but I did DVR this one because of the SW.
Overall, I thought it was just ok. I laughed out loud maybe 3 or 4 times, and the rest of the time I merely smiled at good jokes. Too often, I was checking how much longer it was.
As said by many others, Robot Chicken was much better.

Well I think they were running a risk with an hour long episode. Star Wars-Family Guy fans would've been the most pleased with the runtime, then non-Star Wars-Family Guy fans(do they exist?), then casual watchers of either.
I didn't mind the runtime, but I knew plenty of people would.

it has been my experience that if you watch enough TV, sitcoms, they all use the same jokes and such. Really there is not a lot of orignality in hollywood, just look at all the remakes, squells and comic book movies. Don't even get me started on reality shows, but then I do NOT watch much tv, other than NFL, 24, UFC.
I've seen a handful of Family Guy shows over the years and was entertained by them. Not enough to schedual watching them like I did the first few years of the Simpsons.
I liked the Star Wars show, and would watch if they did another.

Yes, they do all steal from each other, but what separates the good from the bad is when they bring something new, a different take on something we know. Family Guy doesn't do that.

Crude humor is still humor. If you don't like crude humor, you shouldn't be watching the show, and probably shouldn't even be posting in this thread. Family Guy has always been crude humor at its core. Don't ***** at the Family Guy for giving you crude humor, ***** at the Simpsons when it gives you crude humor.
Some of you people act like the show should be taken off the air for doing exactly what it was made to do.

From the Star Wars Family Guy ep, does anyone know what they were spoofing when they arrived at the Death Star in the Falcon, Peter Griffin says "be cool" and then they're walking the walk across the hanger with the "music" playing?
I'm sure the music, and perhaps the movements were alluding to something, but I can't figure out what...

^ What, and Robot Chicken isn't crude? Trust me, I'm not defending Family Guy at all, but I stopped watching RC regularly because of the crudeness.
No it's defintely crude from time to time... I'm more referring to the Star Wars one. It wasn't real bad... Luke and Leia in bed ("That was so wrong" lol), and the suggestion Boba Fett had a romantic interest in Han were the worst it got when you think about it.
The Family Guy one crossed the line for me multiple times.
Crude humor is still humor. If you don't like crude humor, you shouldn't be watching the show, and probably shouldn't even be posting in this thread. How can I know it has crude humor unless I've watched the show at least once? And since this one was Star Wars related, certainly it's going to draw in extra viewers as well. As a viewer of that episode, I am certainly qualified to post in the thread. You're basically saying anyone who doesn't agree with you view of the show can't post in a thread about the show? Please, lol.
Family Guy has always been crude humor at its core. Don't ***** at the Family Guy for giving you crude humor, ***** at the Simpsons when it gives you crude humor.Apples and oranges. Simpsons doesn't cross the same lines that Family Guy does, and I'm sure you're aware of that fact.
Some of you people act like the show should be taken off the air for doing exactly what it was made to do.Hope you're not referring to me... I don't think it should be taken off the air, I just fell away from watching it because it seemed to get worse and worse after coming back from being taken off the air.
To be honest... it's the pedophile "humor" that turns my stomach the most (but there's more). I just feel it's poor taste and detracts from otherwise pretty clever stuff in their 80's references and cutaway gags.
Besides... people are allowed to have an opinion, no?
Raganork8
10-22-2007, 12:05 PM
^ I understand exactly where you are coming from.
I felt that some of the stuff isn't really GOOD to laugh at. There are some jokes about celebrity deaths and what not that i find myself cringing at. However i feel that if you can't poke fun at some things then the human mind has lost it's ability to cope, IMO, I see why the pedophile neighbor would bother some viewers; but, I never find it to be done in a grotesque or disgusting way. Honestly the show plays on your OWN thoughts, they never blatantly say he's a pedophile; but, we know this because we're all adults.
There are way better gags that they can pull with 80's references and things of the like and they do seem to be straying away from those types of things; but, i think the show has kept it's "funny"
I also didn't see anything wrong in the Star Wars Special i found that to be more tasteful than most episodes.

For the record, I wasn't actively singling specific people out when I was talking about their frustration with family guy. It was directed at points here and there that people have made at this board and other places.
And yes, you can have opinions. My backlash was basically aimed at people who can only post to bash. I'm sure we're all familiar with that, being star wars fans.
I will say that it's kind of hard to keep a good grip on what the Family Guy audience is going to find funny. I don't find the older episodes as funny now, partially because the shock factor of certain situations or jokes is not even lingering anymore. They've just been throwing so much at us for probably longer than they should be, similar to South Park.
Of course, with South Park, every time I think they need to hang up the gloves, they come out with something like last weeks splendid episode, one of a three part series. Actually, I think when the 'Balls' trilogy is over, it's gonna feel like the show already had its finale.
But anyways ...

Apparently they threw in a fake teaser for The Simpsons, and in it Marge is chased by Quagmire, who then proceeds to have sex with her offscreen. She apparently enjoys it, and they go back to the Simpson home, where Homer walks in and Quagmire proceeds to shoot the entire family.
I understand poking fun at each other, and that's great. But going so far as to kill the entire family, including Maggie? Pure stupidity, if you ask me.

They took this one-note joke and added a little sixteenth note otherwise known as his family, and they were nothing more than the Griffins with different character models.
