EDIT:

Yeah, I remember the cash stress. But it must be so much harder in the US. We get grants in the UK (or Scotland anyway now, thank you Mr Blair) but I still had to get a bank loan to pay my fees for 1st year. I don't envy you.

If you go shopping with your roomies, make sure they aren't going to shoplift or else you'll spend 5 hours in a police station having to bail them out after they made you walk 15 blocks in the worst part of NYC.

Better yet, just don't have room mates. They suck, or at least mine did, and I was only taking a pre-college course for one month. Imagine a whole year. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thud.gif

Between whatever job you will be getting to help fund your tuition, and your classes, and your classwork don't forget to join some clubs or other extracurricular activities. Wonderful way to deal with stress when your Prof bumps up deadlines by a few weeks or your TAs go on strike, or all of your Profs decide to have the big exams on the same day, etc...

Oh, and the Library is your friend. Free access to books, quiet place for uninterrupted study, and comfy chairs for sleeping <G>

Bah... I spent maybe 40 hours in the library over my 4.5 years in college. It's overrated.

Now, computer labs... I don't even want to think about how much time I spent in computer labs trying to get early-generation G4's running Media 100 not to crash and screw with my video...

Cool... living on campus? I recommend that... don't know how far that is away from your home, but at least a hundred mile buffer zone between you and your parents is highly, highly recommended. I found about 300 to be the ideal distance.

In all seriousness, drinking comments aside, the most important bit of advice I can give you -- keep your door open. Unless you're sleeping or changing or something similar... an open door in the dorm leads to social networking, and unless you make friends you'll be miserable. I was about ready to drop out after the first couple weeks because I hadn't really talked to anyone outside my roommate (and he was crazy).... once I met some friends it was a completely different situation (well, academically still miserable, but that's what major changes are for).

It really all depends on what you go to school for as to which on is better. Texas has a better Engineering, Medical, Law and Arts (inluding film and music) schools. Although A&M has better Agricutural schools which isn't suprising because it is an A&M.

Always buy your own drink or at least pick it up yourself from the bartender. Always keep your drink where you can see it. If you have to go somewhere where you can't take your drink, finish it first, then go. This applies even if your drink is non-alcoholic. Never drink on an empty stomach.

And just in case someone hasn't already said it:

Beer before liquor, never been sicker.

Beer before wine, everything's fine.

(drink responsibly kiddies!)

I remember my freshman year, a lot of people in my dorm had brought a lot of mementos from high school. Which, of course, was easy for them as they mostly lived just up the Eastern Seaboard. Me, I flew in from Wyoming, so I had to leave all that crap behind.

And in retrospect, I'm glad I did.

So my best advice (insofar as it's among the few good ideas I actually had back then) is to leave high school behind. Might be tough, but be brave, don't look back, and yada yada yada.

Good luck! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Do Not drink anything a strange man hands you! (Do what Sabrina said)
Do Not get in a car with someone who has been drinking.
Do Not feel pressured to drink, because they WILL put it in your hand.
Make all the friends you can, you will have them the rest of your life.

Actually, DON'T take advantage of this. Like Blizzard and Sabrina have said, don't trust the guys. And in some instances, don't trust the girls either.

Yes to making friends. One way to do this is the join a sorority. But you still have to be careful with that. There are instances where sororities have had problems with the campus administration, just like the fraternities you hear about in the news.

There will always be instances of sororities/fraternities getting bad press, just as there are possibilities of individual students having the same thing happen.

Yeah, that's definitely rough. Fortunately, I had some of those classes spread out over a couple semesters. I think my worst CS semester was Internet Engineering, Design/Analysis of Algorithms, Compilers, and Database System Design.

For me, hell was the year I took Vertebrate Anatomy, Genetics, Web Design Prog I & II, Organic Chemistry I & II with labs, and Cell Biology with lab. With those two semesters sandwiched between summers in which I took Chemistry I, II, and Physics II (all with labs), that entire year sucked.

Lucky you! I didn't go to uni, I went to a free college, non boarding. But then a girl with genetic special needs has to stay close to her parents which on my opinion is perfect not in sarcastic way though.

Anyway on with your advise: If you get under pressure take a break, skip a few classes and go shopping that will take stress off believe me! Don't do what I did though! Don't skip your classes for several months on your last year there! Best thing to do, start skipping classes on your second year then if you stay on for a third you can make up for the time you missed by making a deal with yourself and your professor.

You were lucky then. On my campus there was no such place. Too many students and not enough space; plus it was near the high street and the college itself was on a busy road but it was near the river at least. But the river wasn't that clean and on the other side was the backs of old buildings like the courtroom and townhall. So not nice.

Ok... I searched up a thread for the college kiddies, and I only found one... for college woes. But I don't have a college woe. I'm just excited that I'm back in school!! Woohoo. So I was wondering if there was anyone else in the Senate who is in college and what they are majoring in, or if anyone has any interesting stories...

I just got my Internet working and all my stuff is unpacked, and one of my apartmentmates is a Star Wars fan. YEA! Hopefully this year will be good...

I am always tired, and I have too much reading. Being a student athlete is hard. No time for fun.

Got a college freshman here. I'm doing the community college route first before transfering to a four year. Right now I'm at Fort Scott Community College because I'm poor- which means a lot of government money- and I get to avoid the fun of living on my own for two more years. I am of course an English major (would you expect any less?). With most of my friends moved away I've noticed I'm hanging out more with people I only casually talked to back in high school.

I've been seeing to much of the people I was friends with in highschool, so I haven't really met new people. It's sort of annoying, but I'm too busy to go out and make new friends.

Kommandant Felix
09-14-2007, 01:20 AM
I guess I'm the exact opposite...I don't see any of my old friends (just the way I like it), and have become social and outgoing, making a ton of new ones.

I'm working on it. It's hard though. This is like the first break I've taken in a few weeks. I've met lots of people, but it just doesn't seem like enough right now, or rather I'm not meeting the KIND of people I want to meet. I'm probably just loosing my mind. I guess I just miss my best friends a lot. :(

I am listed as "undecided," and my academic adviser is really just letting me take what ever I want, pursuing the interests I had is high school, like bioanthro, psych, nutri sci and literature. The classes I'm taking should fulfill the breadth requirements for any major, and, because of APs, I am almost a year ahead of the other freshmen.

Hmm, not seen this thread before...

Anyway just thought I could say what I am doing now. We don't have the exact same system in Norway, but this is how it usually works:

You first start off with a 3 or four year long Bachelor program, which earns you a Bachelor degree.
You can then do another two years to get a Masters degree.
Then yet another two years to get a Doctorate (spelling? maybe same as Ph.D.).

I started on my first year of my Bachelor degree this year. in the Bachelor program called "Physics, astronomy and meteorology". For the first year and a half I will have basic math and Physics classes, until I at the halfway point choose one of the three directions. I am going for the theoretical (won't be theoretical anymore when I am done with it!) Astrophysics and Astronomy line. Then I will see if I can continue my education in a country that has a space program, US maybe.

How is the school schedule on a yearly basis wherever you people are from?

In Norway we start (all dates are approximates, because it differs from class to class) around the 20th of August, to around the 15th of December. Then from the 15th of January to the end of May/beginning of June.

Kommandant Felix
10-04-2007, 01:27 AM
About the same here, mate....but it all depends on how many credits and how many times a week it meets.

I've had classes that last only a week, but are almost all day before.

Morridini
10-04-2007, 01:37 AM
Ops, forgot that there is actually Easter holiday as well during the Spring half of the year. As well as Labor Day, Constitution Day and some other Christian day that we get school off, the time when Jesus either went down or up from/to Heaven after dying.

Kapit
10-04-2007, 01:39 AM
Hmm, so school starts so late certain places...

I start late because I'm on a Quarters schedule. Basically, I go for 12 weeks, take 2 weeks off, go for another 12 weeks, take 2 weeks off, and so on for the entire year.

Morridini
10-04-2007, 03:31 AM
Hmm, well that system doesn't add quite up with the amount of weeks in a year. So do you have three quarters of that system a year?

Kapit
10-04-2007, 01:51 PM
No, it is four quarters, so it must be closer to 11 weeks per quarter....I didn't do that math before

Morridini
10-04-2007, 02:43 PM
Sounds better, remember if you divide the year into four (duh) quarters it is 13 weeks each quarter.

Morridini
10-04-2007, 04:30 PM

It's simply not something I enjoy, however as I am studying physics I have to know alot of Math. This semester I have 20 hours math a week and another 5 hours a week of "computer programing for future use in mathematics"...

Darth Massacrus
10-05-2007, 12:43 AM

Rebel Astromech Droid
10-16-2007, 09:11 PM
Maybe it's just my school, but I really REALLY don't like it. The classes are fine, not great, but I find them interesting a good part of the time. I don't really care for my roommate. I don't really like the people I've been meeting. Don't get me wrong, I've met tons of people. They're just all so mainstream, it's not really my scene I guess. Basically, I go to UW Madison, HUGE party school. There are too many small town people who just go out and get completely smashed and then watch football. I thought that college would be more diverse than I've found it to be. Maybe I just need to give it some time. I haven't even finished my first semester after all.

Also. . . . psychology is hard. :(

^ It may take a while for you to find your group - it took me quite a while, and then I floated in and out of different groups all the way through as people change a lot at that stage in their lives. I only had one friend that I keep in decent contact with for my entire time there, everyone else I spent time with eventually turned out to not be my kind of people until I settled a bit more in my final year.

Classes started last Monday for me, and it's been goin great so far. Psych 101 is proving to be just as boring as I expected it to be, but my other 3 classes (Critical Thinking, Preparing for Success, and Game Design 101) are awesome cause I've found a great group of friends who just laugh and joke around and just generally have a good time.

I don't really know what we've done in class.
